As you seem to have pulseaudio (at least partially) installed, you could
try to set the audio source to "pulse" in recordmydesktop. Though I have
no idea if that would actually work with apulse. (It does on my system
with pulseaudio fully installed, FWIW.)

Thanks, I think some of it was required for the apulse package in
firefox. Not sure.

Thanks. Still no luck :/

I use virt-manager which seems to have a dep (god, why?) on
libpulse-mainloop-glib0 and libpulse0 so can't uninstall those.

(That was badly worded by me: It works with pulse for me, not apulse.)

Too bad. Did you actually start it like "apulse recordmydesktop"? AIUI,
that's how apulse is supposed to work with any application it supports.
(NB: I'm flying blind, as I never used apulse myself, just trying to
make an educated guess.)

It seems to get pulled in via a dependency on libgvnc.

These are _libraries_. They mean only that the program is capable of
talking to pulseaudio if you have it installed. To actually use the latter,
you need to install it. Most desktop environments pull pulseaudio in via
Recommends, and there are strong opinions both for and against it, but
having the library alone means nothing.

If you wouldn't mind, how did you install that package? It seems the

The 14.04 PPA wanted libavcodec54 but Devuan is sporting libavcodec56 so
unless I downgrade somehow, likely a no-go.

Can't seem to build the source either. libavcodec-dev has some deps on:

   libavcodec-extra-56 : Conflicts: libavcodec56 but
   10:2.6.5-dmo1 is installed.
   libavutil-dev : Depends: libavutil54 (= 6:11.11-1~deb8u1) but
   10:2.6.5-dmo1 is installed.
   libavresample-dev : Depends: libavresample2 (= 6:11.11-1~deb8u1) but
   10:2.6.5-dmo1 is installed.

Apt wants to resolve it by removing palemoon, vlc and a bunch of other
stuff that I'd rather not trash :/ I guess... I'll maybe find a Chrome
plugin or something...I also read something about plugging the speakear
output into the microphone jack to get recordmydesktop working with ALSA
so maybe I'll see if I can find a cable.

If you mix repos (there probably are both Ubuntu and marillat repos in
your sources.list, or at least packages installed from them in your
system) you can't expect deps to be satisfied easily.

What do you want to do exactly, and why you can't to that by using
only the Devuan repos corresponding to the relase you are using?

With pure ALSA (and bridged mic/speaker connectors), this works fine for
me:

$ avconv -f x11grab -show_region 1 \
 -s 1024x768 -i :0.0+60,80 \
 -f alsa -i hw:0,0 \
 -c:v libx264 -c:a libmp3lame \
 -y outfile.mpg

IIRC, ALSA allows to create a loopback device (kernel module), from
which digital audio can be grabbed directly.

Just wanted to capture videao AND sound (via ALSA) with
gtk-recordmydesktop. Can't seem to get it working so thought I'd try
building SSR from source, but the libs it wants are older than what I

Well, with appropriate pinning you can probably turn whatever modern
Debian derivative into a Debian etch, if you like (the main problem
being to find a mirror that still has Debian etch, but I must have the
fill CD set somewhere...) :P

So I guess it must be possible to get a proper devuan jessie/ascii
from a MeDeBunVuan, without reinstalling.

I have never needed to reinstall a De??an on a machine, except for an
upgrade from wheezy to Debian jessie/testing that failed miserably,
for the first time ever. I guess that was some kind of signal sent by
the universe, that I didn't understand on that occasion (it was year 2
BD1 [Before Devuan] ) ;)

You can use http://archive.debian.org/debian/dists/etch/ -or any of the
other versions there-

It's probably easier, if you have LVM and spare space, to create a new
volume, install with debootstrap, bind mount /dev, /dev/pts, /proc and
/sys, chroot to it, make a new initrd, and point grub to boot from it.
It needs you to have a proper fstab, install a kernel, grub2 (grub-pc if
I remember correctly), and any software you might need to boot, like
lvm, mdadm and any firmware your machine requires.

Check carefully your grub configuration to make sure it will boot.

It's pretty easy. First, align your install to be a pure and simple Devuan
Jessie. Upgrade it to the latest updates. Then, edit
your /etc/apt/sources.list file to have pkgmaster.devuan.org/merged as your
only repo server. Better disable whatever you have
in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/, to avoid issues. Then you update and
dist-upgrade as usual.
