Jean;

[...] What sort of formatting errors are you seeing?

Here is a sample of some things I found. There are many, many more.
PLEASE NOTE that most of these problems are in the full book, but
NOT
in the chapter files.

There are many inconsistent uses of numbered and/or bulletted lists
throughout the book, probably due to incorrect/inconsistent style
use.
I am not going to itemize all of them, but here are some examples
from
Chapter 1.
Page 19, at the top is a paragraph numbered 1), but the paragraph
just
before Figure 15 on page 18 should be 1) and this paragraph 2).
Further down, there is another paragraph numbered 1), as it
should be,
but the next paragraph does not have a number, even though it is
part
of the same procedure; it should be 2).
Further down, under Saving a Document Automatically, the two final
paragraphs are a procedure and should be numbered 1) and 2).
Page 20, the use (or not) of bullet points is inconsistent, and the
final paragraph is centered but should not be.

A few random examples from other chapters, after which I gave up
looking.
Page 72 (in Chapter 3), under Adding a Movie or Sound, there is an
un-numbered procedure. Further down is an item in a different
procedure numbered 3), but the other items in that procedure have no
numbers.
Under Using Mail Merge, several items should have bullet points.
Page 81 (in Chapter 4), there is an item numbered 4), but the other
items in the procedure have no numbers.
Page 115, list begins with 4) but the actual first list item is not

numbered.

Some lists use numbers followed by a closing parenthesis; some use
numbers followed by a period (full stop). Again, inconsistent style
use, though trivial compared to the random use of numbering at all.

Other formatting errors are in the chapter files as well as the full
book. Examples (there are many others):
Page 8, the Note is formatted differently from Notes, Tips, Cautions
in other chapters.
Page 20, the final paragraph is incorrectly tagged as OOFigure,
so it
is centered but should not be.

Quick work Dick and thank you for that. Yes, the files in the ForWiki
folder were juts copies od those in the top level. I did it that way to
be able to publish the files in different ways and not disturb the
others which were supposed to be the published sources files.

delete that. It has problems as well.

All ODT files should be checked at the top level. Those in the wiki
folder are just copies of the originals.

Dick and Francis. How far have you gotten?

Here is a sample of some things I found. There are many, many more.
PLEASE NOTE that most of these problems are in the full book, but NOT
in the chapter files.

There are many inconsistent uses of numbered and/or bulletted lists
throughout the book, probably due to incorrect/inconsistent style use.
I am not going to itemize all of them, but here are some examples from
Chapter 1.
Page 19, at the top is a paragraph numbered 1), but the paragraph just
before Figure 15 on page 18 should be 1) and this paragraph 2).
Further down, there is another paragraph numbered 1), as it should be,
but the next paragraph does not have a number, even though it is part
of the same procedure; it should be 2).

I just checked the full-book ODT from which the PDF was created. As
expected, it has all the same formatting errors, so that is evidence
of some problems in the ODM. (I can't think of what else might be
causing these anomalies.

I don't see the ODM in the "for wiki" folder, so I assume it's the one
in the previous folder. If I have time, I'll look at it later.

Keith,
My bad. Got it now. Still finding many, many list formatting errors in
the PDF that are not in the ODTs. Something may be wrong with the
styles in the ODM.
Also some other formatting problems in the ODTs.

Jean;

If you downloaded the pdf from the mwiki that is a PDFA-1a created from
an ODT file. The only difference is that I stripped the TOC as the A-1a
format turns the TOC in an image to delete the transparency, and

Looks like I'm not able to find the Getting Sarted guide > Review folder
anymore.
As I believe that was the place where the edited .ODT files were stored.

Formatting Errors in PDF of Getting Started Guide

2022-06-10 Thread Jean Weber
The PDF of the Getting Started Guide has many serious formatting
errors which I do not see in the chapter ODTs. Perhaps I am looking at
the wrong file? I'm completely lost about where to find the latest
iterations of ODTs or PDFs.
