I copied Base Guide 7.3 REV 0 files into the folder REV 1.

I fixed the issues reported and added a comment (Ctrl+Alt+C) to each. I 
invite the team to fix the issues directly and add a comment indicating 
the change.


On publishing the revision, the comments will be verified and removed.

Thanks for leading this topic.

Advancing one of my remarks:

On captions of small images (e.g. couple of icons) or tall and thin 
images (vertical toolbars) the caption text often flows vertically too 
(because the caption is bounded by the image outer frame). That look bad 
and IMHO the caption (actually the outer frame) should be wider to 
prevent excessive reflow of the caption text. A rule-of-thumb may be to 
let the caption have 2 lines at most, and not not exceed X % of the 
image width (X to be defined).

One reason of the problem is, that ODF allows the setting "anchor-type" 
as direct attribute of an object and as part of a style. If both are 
present, the object attribute "wins". Currently LibreOffice writes it as 
direct attribute and do not include it in custom defined style. Only the 
predefined styles have set the anchor-type as part of the style.


If you derive your custom style from an predefined style, it will 
inherit the setting. Currently there is Watermark with anchored to page, 
and Frame, Graphics, Marginalia and OLE anchored to paragraph, and 
Formula and Labels anchored as-char.

[libreoffice-documentation] Frame styles question and captioned image resizing.

Hi

I am making some adjustments in images for the Base Guide and found 
"inconsistencies" in frame styling.


Applying a frame style to a graphic object in a text document does not 
mean that all style properties listed in the frame style dialog are applied.


In particular, the "anchoring", “keep ratio”, “auto size”, “relative 
to”, “width” and “height” found in the Type tab of a frame style are not 
applied to the object.


Which is rather confusing, unless it’s a bug.

The Writer guide mentions anchoring as a manual setting, but not the 
other settings above.


Also, the Writer guide mention captioning how-to topics but not one use 
case we find so often: resizing captioned images.

Ideally I would like to resize the frame and get the internal 
image/screenshot resized accordingly (or vice-versa). It is not clear to 
me how the frame properties relates to the image (also a frame) inside, 
and if there are parameters to set to bind the 2.


A clear instructions on this use case will go into the guides, Help and 
wiki.

Hi

I've spent time and cleared out the issue with the infra team and it 
will be possible to send a mail to the forum without subscription.


The mail will hit the moderation, though.

If the sender wants to edit or be part of the community he/she will have 
to register, as usual.


The mail address will be set when the documentation forum go live. I 
have no better name to suggest than 
"documentat...@community.documentfoundation.org".

I have updated the servers with the latest Lulu link.

I am in touch with Peter on the Impress Guide. He showed me where the 
issues were. Same as Draw guide.


- List numbering restart here and there. This is because the first 
numbered list in the chapters have no restart set to 1. When this is not 
set, it displays a default of "1", but the restart number is empty. 
Incidentally, it surfaced a bug in Writer (1).


- Widows/orphans. Peter advice is to get rid of orphans/widows and use 
"do not split paragraph". Currently this is not in the Template V7. I 
set this in the "Text Body" style of the master document and used 
inheritance. No more widows or orphans in the text in master document.


- Images: The changes in anchoring create a slightly larger frame that 
caused the image offset and page break issue. These have been addressed.


- empty paragraphs removed

The result is not published but I have it in the cloud at the following 
address for comments and review.

Naturally, I found myself dizzy like a drunk cockroach(*).

The access to style is obscured and I could not find the full Search and 
replace dialog, except by typing Ctrl+H.

will reflow and total pages will increase accordingly).


My maths says the book is ~75% the size of the current A4 document, same 
number of pages.


I'll test this operation in Linux (I think it is feasible)



Of course, someone else could avoid that step and produce the books
full-size (A4) and purchasers would have to pay the extra printing
cost (probably double) and postage cost. Thoughts?


I admit I have not purchased one of Lulu prints, but I guess font size 
and image quality won't suffer.




(There are some other issues to consider, which are unrelated to the
page size. I will mention them in separate notes.)


A wiki page on the topic, with do's and don'ts is my suggestion.

Master document:
The cover page style is right only
The back cover is left only

Chapters:
- Top logo is anchored as character in a paragraph with style "New 
Chapter", that has a page break before with page style "First page".

- The First page style is right only,
- The copyright + TOC section has page style "Front matter"
- The first "Heading 1" of each chapter has a manual page break before 
with "Default page style".


If the blank page is to be removed/ignored, a checkbox must be unchecked 
in the PDF export dialog and the "First page" style has go back to 
"right and left", then chapters can start on the left page.


Please advise here.



2. Paragraph (Book = 1) added after copyright paragraphs.


This is control variable "book" in master document (and exported ODT 
file) that hides the copyright and TOC section (SEC_COPYRIGHT) of each 
individual chapter, so they are not displayed in the master document nor 
exported to PDF. We can hide this variable by just erasing this line 
(the variable will not be erased).


Note: Chapters don't have this variable, so its assumed 0 and chapter 
Copyright + TOC are displayed.




3. Space added before each chapter title on the chapter title page.


I don't  follow you here.



4. What is the difference between the chapter template used to create the 
chapters and the template used for this version of the user guide. The 
formatting for the book is now incorrect. For example, Figure 5 should be on 
Page 20 below Figure 4. This is easy to fix, but the rest of the book has 
incorrect formatting. I think it is to do with spacing, but cannot find the 
problem at the moment.


The master document has the same template as the chapters except cover, 
back cover and the tweak on the First page.


I have fixed the list restart numbering and extra empty paragraphs in 
the chapters and rebuilt the documents in my local copy. Let me know if 
I have to upload them to the cloud.

Thanks for the text. Files are updated.

On the covers, the master document has 2 additional page styles - cover 
and back cover - with background image accordingly. The cover is right 
only and the back cover is left only.

Please download if you require a copy. It is in ODT format.

The LO template for user guides was not used for this text and all the 
formatting on the text is direct formatting. The LO template was not suitable. 
This is why the back cover with text is in PNG format. That way it did not 
create any problems when the user guides are prepared for publishing.

I have reviewed and published BG7302-CreatingADatabase (actually it was 
named BG7402 in WIP folder, fixed)


I also reviewed and published BG7303 Tables, BG7306 Reports and BG7307 
Linking to Databases.


I am revising BG7308 Database tasks, after Dev review and remarks.  As 
side note, Dev's remarks made me fix a dialog and Help page in source 
code related to Direct SQL statements. Thanks Dev!


So we are left with BG7308 (me) and BG7305 (Pulkit) to finish the Base 
Guide 7.3.

Some important questions to answer or to know on the creation of the 
Documentation forum. Please voice your opinion.


1) Do you want an automatic subscription to the forum, based on the 
current subscription of the DOc' mailing list? PLease note:


   + automatic subscription will be done for people with a login at TDF 
(the one you have for NextCloud, for example)


   + If you prefer to do it yourself, you can use the login you have in 
TDF (the same as used in NextCloud). You can also define a different 
e-mail address for the Forum service (set in 
https://user.documentfoundation.org/edit )


   + The Forum has its own set of options (gear icon on the top left) 
where you can adjust the settings of your forum account, including the 
frequency of forum notification mails sent to you.


2) The current doc mailing list contents has been imported to the test 
site and will be imported to the production forum. Therefore:


+ Shall we close the doc mailing list (no more posts there)?
+ Shall we leave it open for posting?.
+ WARNING: There is no way to bridge the 2 messaging systems. 
Duplication of contents and division of the team is likely to bring 
confusion and loss of synergy.


3) We can have one main category "Documentation" and several 
subcategories. For example, the subcategories could be "Guides" and "Help".
+ Does subcategories are actually needed? Do you have another 
subcategory to suggest? or...
+ Shall we have just one main category will all subjects in, and filter 
with tags?


The Production Forum is expected to start early june 2022.

Thank you for your inputs, they are important for us to deliver the best 
service.

[libreoffice-documentation] Base Guide 7.3: Deadline set May 31st and Chapter BG7310

Hi team

I'm setting May 31st as the deadline to publish the Base Guide 7.3, with 
the available revisions at the date.


The file BG7310-DatabaseMaintenance_SF_VN_OH03May2022.odt had all SF and 
VN suggestions reviewed and committed. Then I set track changes enabled 
and added a couple of comments where I found the text unclear.


I also added BG7310-DatabaseMaintenance.odt to the Published-Rev0/ 
folder with my changes self-approved. If my comments in the WIP folder 
are addressed before may 31st, I'll replace the file in the 
/published-rev0/ folder.

Published-Rev0 folder.


- Code lines are now with "code" style (no need to overcomplicate things)
- Extra LiBo* paragraph styles removed.
- Fixes here and there.

it seems the idea was abandoned due to lack of contributors. Reading the
mailing archive, I see that Steve took the role of coordinator (Thanks) and
proposed another plan, the one of step by step updating the guide. I think
that is a very good plan.


Steve is working on the chapter 2 of the Base Guide and I took the lead 
of the book. However I admit I have been flooded by other demands and I 
am late. Some of the chapters are published and I set a Master document 
to assemble the book continuously.


A lot has changed in the Documentation team since my last contributions and
I am confused by some changes and how they work. I will try to read the
mailing list archive and see what I can do. A new folder structure seems to
be used in Nextcloud and the tracking spreadsheet has also changed. The
template used for chapters was changing by the time I left and it has
changed completely. One thing that has not changed much is Base
itself 😂😂. I will try to understand everything but I would be thankful if
someone would guide me if I do something wrong.


I don't think we did so many changes, the edit-revision process is still 
the same however we want to test if we publish our guides (Base being 
the first) in a continuous manner, "as is" and update it  indicating 
"revisions" in a periodic basis.

For now, I have taken BG7305-Queries for second review and the expected
return date is 26 April.

Side Note: I am getting a notice on Nextcloud - Group folder "LibreOffice

I also noticed that. It may require a housekeeping job by ourselves or 
it may also be a setting in Nextcloud installation. I'll jump in.

The infra team is making a forum-like instance of the software Discourse 
for the community interaction.


We have set a "Documentation" category to handle our discussion related 
to our guides and other important documentation topic.


The work is going on to set a bridge between the current mailing list 
(this one) and the forum category.


Unlike the mailing list, the forum will allow images and files and we 
expect to be more suitable for the team contents interchange and 
communication.


Please give a try to the test instance. But remember that ALL posting

Hi Olivier,

I would agree that we should pay more attention to a11y in our
documentation. However, I feel the Accessibility Check tool needs
additional work to raise it up to a more useable level.

Just some rough basic examples:

* I run the tool on some of my own documents and it shows headings for
all possible issues in the document, not just those that actually do
exist in the document and need consideration. Creating confusion for
inexperienced users.

* The dialog shows 2 instances of items where "The text formatting
conveys additional meaning." is displayed, when the document actually
has a total of 8 identical issues.

* Clicking the "Go to issue" dialog button highlights a 1/2 special
character, which tells the user absolutely nothing about the
accessibility issue, IF ANY.

I haven't yet checked Bugzilla, but I feel this needs to be drawn to the
devs attention.

You are probably aware that the "Help" button in the Accessibility Check
dialog generates a 404 page error.

I'll fix the Help button miss.

I am aware the tool can be less than perfect but the point here is also 
to practice the tool and generate bugs for improvements. At least we can 
fix part of the issues raised (e.g "alt" attribute).


I agree that "The text formatting conveys additional meaning." looks 
broken or is catching false positives.


It also calls for more information on the issues detected, including 
suggestions to fix. And the Help page is terse.

I have replaced the files in the Published folder with ones I had to 
tweak a bit (in any case, I have the backup). Covers are fixed with a 
page style for front and back covers, holding the hi-res png in page 
background. I also added a book front matter page.


Nothing in the contents except some under-the-hood changes (anchors, 
non-listed styles, ...) to better fit the master document and to help me 
later to export to HTML.


I have a question on printing a book like that. Usually the chapters 
should start in odd-numbered pages (I think) but I'm not sure how you 
control that when using page mirroring. I suspect some chapters starts 
on even pages. In the past I used R-page L-page chain to handle correct 
page to start (at the expense of some blank pages inserted), but with 
mirroring, that is obscure to me.


What is your take?

I notice a slight change in the fonts used in the cover and back cover 
of WG73.


Is this intended? If not, I have rebuild the covers in PNG high 
definition (300dpi) with the Trueno fonts. This font is avaliable in the 
Contributor resources folder.

Hi all

I have reviewed the Base Guide Macro chapter BG7309, with the following 
additions


- Accepted all suggestions by Steve Fanning
- cleanup of anchors, frames, styles, Basic and Python code using Andrew 
Pitonyak source code coloring extension.
- Added section on ScriptForge by flywire (fixed typos and code 
formatting. A second review is advisable as some commented lines were 
left in the code)


The file is in WIP folder for further review with track changes enabled.

I also added a version in the Published folder and hooked to the master 
document. A temporary PDF was also updated.

Correct, except that the anchoring should be as character. Style "New 
Chapter" should be applied to the first paragraph of the Chapter and has 
"Page Break Before". "LibreOfficeLogo" is a named image and name should 
be unique in chapter. NO caption here.




The next document was longer and had some more interesting issues:


Please bear in mind that the file in the link you posted is not 
accessible, and if I may, its filename indicates a very old document.

Of course YMMV. Personal matter should be kept personal.

However the contents of the mail related to the work we do is - in 
general - of public interest.


For example, a questions related to the book or software. The mailing 
list will reach more people than a private mail and the answer can come 
faster, often richer, from the mailing list subscribers.


Write for a public audience forces to carefully choose words in respect 
to a multi-cultural community.

    string, without actually making sure that the functions are truly

If the appendix is to be moved later to wiki, we can address the issue 
there.



  * There are blank cells in the description of some Firebird entries in
    the Operators and statements section. These could be populated using
    information on referenced web pages.Again I agree but the effort
    involved is beyond the scope of the update planned at this
    iteration. We would also need to be careful to use the correct
    Firebird information - the referenced pages relate to Firebird 4,
    whereas LO currently uses Firebird 3.0.7.

the BG and transferred to a wiki page which could utilise hyperlinks to 
the correct information on the HSQLDB and Firebird websites, 
highlighting differences between the two.
