[Dorset] Introduction

2010-09-23 Thread Bryn Jones
Hi All,

Having rejoined the list I figured I ought to say 'Hi'.

I'll try and come down to one of the meetings if I can, spare giro funds
permitting!!! (time I have plenty of at the mo'!).

I'm no Linux guru but I am an ex 3rd line support Telecoms/Applications
engineer so if you need any telco stuff answering I'll certainly try :).

Do be warned I do get vaguely evangelical pie in the sky ideas about
random community IT projects :)

Look forward to hearing/meeting you in the future

Bryn

Pah I upgraded to Maverick Meerkat 2 weeks ago on my day to day
netbook. It collapsed in a heap and I had to blat it and start again
going back to 10.04.

I really shouldn't make decisions to do stuff like this at midnight

VM's are the future Where else would I run that single app that only
runs on windoze ;).

[Dorset] OT (ish) difference between ZIF and LIF connectors

2010-09-30 Thread Bryn Jones
Heyup,

OK its OT but i've posted this in various places and got nowhere. So
I'll try you lot

The HD on my netbook has died a bit of work tells me it's a 1.8" PATA
ZIF 5mm 4,800rpm. all cool till you try and buy a replacement out of
your limited dole money

However I have found 1.8" PATA LIF drives at a reasonable price

>From what i can tell ZIF and LIF are just different manufacturers terms for
the same connector but of course getting proper tech data out of there
sales guys is like chinese water torture (slow and gradually drives you
nuts)

Anyone know?...

Hey Si,

That all but confirms my thought that ZIF and LIF are the same

The most useful thing though was the part number that pointed me to
http://www.span.com/product_info.php?products_id=5983 that says that its a
suitable replacement for a Tosh MK6038GAL

I may finally be winning :-)

[Dorset] Install day..... Maybe?

2010-10-08 Thread Bryn Jones
Hey all,

Someone heard about my pet project (to setup some sort of community resource
for computers, bits, bobs and errr a bit o' linuxing action) and suggested
doing a 'Linux install workshop'.

So this is a sort of call for volunteers (way ahead of actually setting
something up of course!)

If anyone is up for doing a linux how-to/install/whatever I am and err
one other :) I'm sure a bit of asking about could get a venue for
free..

I saw the lug had done this a couple of times in the past so it's not
breaking new ground!...

Well let me know

A definite WTF here I finally got a new HDD for my netbook today
Installed 10.10

Had a hissy fit when the evolution setup wizard wasn't scaled to my
screen so handy buttons like 'OK' hung somewhere out of sight off the
bottom Tab Tab Tab

Then I wondered why it was so slow

System Monitor Oh look CPU 100%, a mix of Firefox and Software
Centre

It's settled down now. But it took a fair while and I was doing
nothing

I'm not overly in love with Unity But then I was starting to get
irritable about the previous interface (I've installed Mepis as well
to have a play with)

Displeased dog seems to think she's more important than my computer
She may have a point :s

The resolution is fine

Just the window running off screen But there's a. n. other mail

OK I'll bite

Linux has quietly been becoming more 'user' friendly over the past few
years, but it's not there yet as a 'normal user desktop'. Let me clarify
this - it is for 'me', and I actively promote it amongst my social group
and when I was working would slip the odd Linux server in where I could
(bearing in mind that for the past x years I worked for windoze software
houses)

When I say it's not there 'yet' a huge part of this is users not being
exposed to Linux. An image issue... I had one guy who whinged constantly
about pidgin but shut up when I installed aMSN, the issue? well from
what I could tell it was just that it looked different to the MSN
Messenger interface he knew

These days I can install various distro's on most hardware without
having to scratch my head over drivers. But for example Meego which is
run by the Linux Foundation, Nokia and others and designed for Netbooks
and mobile devices does not ship with the drivers for 'my' netbook's
WiFi Yeah 'I' could sort that out... But it would have stumped a
'new' user.

If say for example in *buntu I want to change the default application
for another I need to know where that new application is in the file
system It does not intuitively provide the application as an option
or for example, when I fire that application up it does not ask an
appropriate question 'Do you want to associate this application to X'.
Again not an issue for me but it's been a niggle for a user...

I am evangelical about Linux, because it's Open Source, It's community
based, because I dislike M$'s licensing, because I'm bloody minded and I
love convincing people to use Asterisk rather than spending £££'s on a
new PBX, and I really enjoyed the state of confusion that one of my
'clients' had when I explained he didn't have to pay for the bit of
'Dark Magic' software that saved him a day a week's work

Whoah I just kinda ranted and made limited sense and wandered way off
what I planned to say!!!... Oh well

Bryn

Re: [Dorset] Network analysis tools

2010-11-10 Thread Bryn Jones
Hey Brian,

The one I like is wireshark (whether there's still an open source version I
dunno), multiprotocol and with ao feature I just loved... it could umm
unencode SIP packets back to a wav file... I like stuff like that :).

Oh how I miss rocking up to site with my protocol analyzer to shred someones
DPNSS implementation

:)

Hi all,

I don't know what anyone has said up to now about network analysis, but I
have only just discovered 'etherape' and just needed to rave about it. I
used to write network analysis tools for X25 when I worked for Plessey and
always planned to write something like this but never got round to it.

Hi Peter,

If memory serves me (and on this occasion I think it does) this is being
run by c4l (who are I believe are also reselling fibre connectivity from
fibrecity) Their website may have more info.

Yeah the WebOS stuff is interesting It's major shortfall for me is
that only o2 are selling the mobiles in the UK.

I've been wondering what was going on with Meego for a bit, given it's
backers it seemed to be moving very slowly, while google were ripping on
with Android (though Chrome OS iirc has missed a fair few project
milestones...)

Samsung have something called Bada which I haven't really looked at but
it can use a Linux kernel

Nokia's decision seems strange to me in that they are tying themselves
closely to M$ when IMO the rest of the market bar Apple are seemingly
hedging there bets by offering devices with varying OS's It smells
odd. But I have an awful sense of smell :)
