Re: [Dorset] Suse First, Vista second

2009-03-10 Thread David Crawford

my h'apporth into the mix, for what it's worth ~ if Wind-ohs has
overwritten the MBR (which, in my experience, is pretty certain...), then it
can be reclaimed by using 'supergrubdisk'. I have found it an absolutely
invaluable tool. David Crawford. (.unfortunately Windohs is a fact of
life...)

Unless Vista has improved on XP, Windows must be loaded first as it
wipes the Master Boot Record (MBR) and disk and that means Grub and
  Linux if already loaded.
I have a vague memory of that being one of the improvements in Vista.
Even if it wasn't, it wouldn't wipe Linux, only GRUB. You'd have to boot
into Linux from a CD or similar and re-install GRUB, which should detect
the Windows installation at the same time.

Re-sizing the partition is something you would have to do first though.

I'm fairly certain Windows does not require NTLDR on the first partition
of the first hard disk, in fact the diagnostics partition which often
exists on laptops would usually be the first one, and wouldn't be
  available for Windows to use.

Err, Yes XP would wipe Linux as it not only wipes the MBR, but the whole
  disk.

Even if Vista can cope, I'd still stick with installing Windows first as
Linux has had far more experience with working with windoz over the years.

  John.

Except that isn't necessarily the case, even with XP. Dan has dual booted
linux and XP with linux first before. He will try to get a guide up in the
  next couple of days.

I'm just suggesting the safest way. The other suggestions all seem very
complicated compared with installing Windoz first and using Ubuntu. I
certainly have had XP completely erase Linux.

Geez, and I thought this was a Linux User Group (not Windoz, GNU or
 Unix) :-)
