[Dorset] [OT] Mobility Scooters

2010-09-22 Thread Sean Gibbins

[Apologies to anyone on Hants who has already received this message]

Hmm, OT doesn't really go far enough to describe this request...

Perhaps if I promise to add on a mini-itx pc running Linux I can drag it
/vaguely/ back on-topic!

Anyway, does anyone have a reliable mobility scooter sitting idle they
can either lend, lease or sell me for my son? Ideally I am looking for
something between the tiddly 3-wheelers and the great big 8mph
road-worthy efforts, i.e. a reasonably compact 4mph class 2 pavement
job, but right now I'll consider anything!

He's started uni in Southampton and is really struggling with getting
around - he has cerebral palsy and generally walks with two sticks. He
got on fine at school and college where everything was on one site, but
is struggling with getting between halls and the various buildings where
is course is held. He is finding the taxis somewhat unreliable and the
walk just a bit too much for him plus a bagful of books.

He's due to get a Disabled Student's Allowance grant toward mobility,
but it hasn't come through yet and money's a bit tight as we also have
another one going off to uni next week - his twin sister.

If you can help, or if you know of somewhere I can buy or lease a good
used device I'd be very grateful.

there is a specialist shop in Ferndown, in the shopping centre (sorry,
don't know name or details), another in Bournemouth (Christchurch
Road, near Horseshoe Commons).

The ferndown one is on the Old A31 going East-West- It is called
'Sensibility' or something like that.

There is one just south of the Fleetsbridge roundabout going in to
Poole.

There is also a Mobility shop in Wimborne on the B3081(?) Leigh Road at
the bottom of St. John's Hill.

There is also one in Wimborne at the Riverside, accessible from the
Somerfields car park.

Whether any of them rent I don't know.

Hi Sean,

My wife has worked at So'ton Uni in the past, and said immediately
that you or he should approach the Centre for Assistive Technology,
which is part of the University's Student Support Services. I'll try
and chase up a website ref.

best regards

The mobility centre in Wareham definitely rents scooters and motorised chairs.
They've been great when we've had problems - http://www.purbeckmobility.com/.
Just in case the uni takes time to sort.

Hi Adrian,

I followed up on Vic's suggestion and got in touch with Access Solent,
part of Student Support Services. They recommended we go to a drop in
session later this week, but as Sam's need was a bit more urgent than
that we found a local guy through googling who was initially cheap, but
also turned out to be decent and professional. We ended up spending £800
on a new machine which, having tested it in the city centre for a couple
of days, seems ideally suited to purpose, i.e. will sustain a
medium-to-fast walking pace over 6 or 7 miles without charging and is
small enough to get into Sam's room.

We looked at rental to tide us over until Sam's Disabled Student's
Allowance came through, but it would have been cheaper to use cabs,
although less convenient, admittedly. The DSA mobility grant will
hopefully cover some of the cost of the scooter.

Anyway, he's back at uni now having been patched up (he strained a big
hip muscle last week and couldn't walk at all, let alone with his
sticks), and I am back to worrying about him!

His twin sister went off to Exeter this weekend and thankfully seems to
have taken to uni life like a fish to water. Phew!

Thanks to all, on- and off-list for their suggestions.

Sean, I noticed a stall in Boscombe market on Thursday selling mobility
scooters. Probably cheaper but not sure on warranty!
