[Dorset] Network error on boot

2012-06-24 Thread Tim
I have just setup a new PC with Debian testing on it and it has been
happily booting until this morning when it froze at bringing up the
network. I rebooted into recovery mode and I get a more details report
on the error as follows

r8169 :03:00.0 eth0: unable to loadfirmware patch
rtl-nic/rt18168e-3.fw (-2)

r8169 :03:00.0:9 eth0 link down
addrconf (netdev_up): eth0: link is not ready
r8169 :03:00.0: eth0 link is not ready
addrconf (netdev_up): eth0: link up
addrconf (netdev_change): eth0: link becomes ready

It then just sits there, as I said it has been happily booting up with
out a problem since first install on Friday and I have not seen any bug
warning related to the rt8169 packages since I installed the apt bug
check package

I have tried to get past the Configuring network interfaces error by
hashing out all lines in the etc/network/interfaces file (booted from a
live CD) but that has not helped, I have also tried disabling the
network interface on the PC which did not help. If I could at least get
the PC to boot up to the desktop it would help.

Any suggestion?

Tim

Does that file exist? It should be in /lib/firmware.

This won't get you a GUI, but it'll get you a root login (but with nothing
_at all_ running). At the grub prompt, edit the command line and append
'init=/bin/bash' to the line specifying the kernel, then boot. You'll be
dropped straight into a root shell.

Alternatively, boot a rescue CD (I favour
http://www.sysresccd.org/SystemRescueCd_Homepage, but any will do). That
will allow you to examine /lib/firmware, and will also allow you to set up
networking if you need to copy a file onto your system.

Could this be a red herring and it's what's happening next that hangs?

Cheers, Ralph.

I favour the gui route I am not a very good at cli

From the boot disk I can access the PC hard disk and make changes but I
don't know what files to modify so that I can switch of the network and
then let the PC boot to a desktop. I am also going off in search of this
rtl-nic/rt18168e-3.fw file and then maybe put it in the lib/firmware
folder and see what happens.

I don't know, checking this laptop as it boots up (debian testing same
as on the PC) the next step aftert configuring network interfaces says

Setting Kernel variables

Ok updating my own post, I realised that the boot disk I was using was
happy accessing the internet so I checked the lib/firmware folder and
there was an rtl-nic folder complete with the rt18168e-3.fw file in the
folder, so I copied the whole folder over and tried booting the PC,
still won't boot past network configuring

Has it stopped it complaining about the lack of said file?

It is now saying

r8169 :03:00.0:9 eth0 link down
addrconf (netdev_up): eth0: link is not ready
r8169 :03:00.0: eth0 link is up
addrconf (netdev_change): eth0: link becomes ready

But it still freezes basically in the same place

Do any of you guys use this Linux utility to boot from if you get problems -
systemrescuecd-x86-2.8.0.iso
If you can't find it on the web, It's a 400MB file so can't attach it here.
Will ftp to anyone who would like to try it..
I won't do it here as it will go to everone.

My favourite tool ;-) It has grown lately from 120Mb to the current bloat
but as USB memory sticks have got bigger it is not so much a problem.

I use it pretty much extensively for archiving file systems / partitions /
bootblocks as it contains partimage, parted, sfdisk, dd & fsarchiver and
seems to boot on virtually anything.
