Just a further note. My phone is Android 13, and the tablet we saw this morning
is Android 10, but don't touch an Android 12 one. They are totally different
and hard to get the hang of.

Hi,

After years of resistance, I'm going to get a tablet!  Ideally it would be one

plenty of contrast.

The reason for this is my deteriorating eyesight.  Generally speaking, I'm OK
with distance vision, but reading small text on coloured backgrounds is
becoming increasingly difficult.  This means that my magazine subscriptions are
largely wasted because I cannot read them.

However, I do know that I can read PDFs of the magazines on my wife's iPad and
on my desktop monitor, so getting a decent tablet is probably the most
convenient solution.  If possible, I don't want to spend a fortune, so Samsung
Galaxy Tabs at circa £1000 are out, and in any case the performance of this
type of device is probably way over the top for reading a magazine.  However, I
am prepared to pay for the kind of performance I need, hence this query.

Thanks in anticipation.

I use the paper like screen protector on the iPad, mainly because I like to
do sketching (badly) using the rather fantastic Apple Pencil.

It transforms it into a nice Matt surface.

Re: [Dorset] Somewhat Off Topic - Can Anyone Recommend a Decent Tablet Computer?

2023-10-30 Thread Peter Merchant

WE have had a few, and I have been happy with Lenovo ones. I once had a 10" one, but it was
eminently droppable, so I now have an 8" one. I recently bought Val a new 8" one, but it has
Android 12 and is a pain to use. I recommend an 8" one over the 7" ones as it is significantly
larger.  Looking at my list, my tablet is Android 10 and my phone Android 13, and both are easy to use.

I suggest that we meet for coffee somewhere and you can have a play before
committing. I got our latest from Currys for about £89. Via Quidco!

cheers,

Peter

However, I do know that I can read PDFs of the magazines on my wife's iPad and

Galaxy Tabs at circa £1000 are out, and in any case the performance of this

am prepared to pay for the kind of performance I need, hence this query.

Thanks in anticipation.

[Dorset] Somewhat Off Topic - Can Anyone Recommend a Decent Tablet Computer?

2023-10-30 Thread Terry Coles

Hi,

After years of resistance, I'm going to get a tablet!  Ideally it would
be one that ran Linux of course, but the main specs needed are good
resolution and plenty of contrast.

The reason for this is my deteriorating eyesight.  Generally speaking,
I'm OK with distance vision, but reading small text on coloured
backgrounds is becoming increasingly difficult.  This means that my
magazine subscriptions are largely wasted because I cannot read them.

However, I do know that I can read PDFs of the magazines on my wife's
iPad and on my desktop monitor, so getting a decent tablet is probably
the most convenient solution.  If possible, I don't want to spend a
fortune, so Samsung Galaxy Tabs at circa £1000 are out, and in any case
the performance of this type of device is probably way over the top for
reading a magazine.  However, I am prepared to pay for the kind of
performance I need, hence this query.

Thanks in anticipation.

[Dorset] Somewhat off-topic.

2010-05-28 Thread Simon O'Riordan
WinFF to convert the flv to audio; Audacity to process the audio; Pitivi
to process the video; Kdenlive to assemble the components into the final
product.
Does anyone know a FOSS or near-FOSS application to actually capture the
video in the first place? I currently have to drop it into a share on my
XP virtual machine.

A lot of the time you will find the file is saved under /tmp at least
when viewed with firefox but It will get deleted when browser window closed.

also about:cache in Firefox lists a lot of info in where files are saved

i used to use the downloadhelper firefox pluging but lately its not been
working for me well http://www.downloadhelper.net/

Dan et al,
I just looked in the /tmp folder, and indeed it was there.
Meanwhile I've back to square one with the Fedora networking, except
I've now got 2 and 3/4 out of 3 working; the Fedora can see its own
shares and the Ubuntu computer, and Ubuntu/Ubuntu sharing has recovered.
All I need to do now is get the blasted Fedora to expose the share to
Ubuntu.
