The problem is that on a few sites such as Ancestry and the EDx MOOC

I am using Kubuntu (the latest) and firefox 24.0.

Next step is to restore the old Router and see if the problem
disappears.

The Clue is in the word 'TalkTalk'. It seems that a lot of people who
have been sent the new Huawei or D-link routers have been experiencing
problems.

I have reverted to my old 3Com router until TalkTalk tell me that
there is a fix. It seems that some people who have installed the new
firmware for the D-link router have bricked it, so I will wait.

Call this matter closed.

Just to resolve this problem: I changed the wireless settings on the new
d-link router from b/g/n to just b/g and now it all works OK. The
3com had been set to 'b' only.

I don't know what models TalkTalk are shipping but are you aware that
theres a fairly massive security hole in many on the D-link domestic
routers.

Covers at least models DIR-100, DI-524, DI-524UP, DI-604S, DI-604UP,
DI-604+ and TM-G5240 see [1] and [2].

Firmware fixes promised by the end of the month.

Sigh.

Another reason I flash my router/modems with dd-wrt or router tech so I
know what is on there.

Thanks Bob.

The talktalk one is a D-Link DSL-2780 completely talktalk-ified from the
outside. I cannot find it on the d-link site. Talktalk discuss in their
forums being able to automatically update the firmware without the
owners intervention, so this backdoor doesn't surprise me.

Cheers,

Peter
