regarding ssl certificates

2019-03-14 Thread mick crane via dovecot

Excuse dopey question.
I'm not exactly clear about certificates.
Apache2 default install has this snake oil certificate
Can make a new one for apache
Can make one for dovecot
Can make one for ssl
Is there supposed to be the one (self signed ) certificate pair in one
place for the machine that each process hands out ?

Can they be moved to another machine ?

Hi,

that's just the Debian packaging. In /usr/share/dovecot are the
original unmodified files for reference. They're not used at all for
the running dovecot.
The active ones, which you need to modify and get used by dovecot are
in /etc/dovecot.
There's no point to delete the files in /usr/share/dovecot because on
the next update of the dovecot packages they get installed again.

Regards
Felix

Ah right, I think I've been changing the /usr/share files.

thanks.

Hi!

you can fix this with

service stats {
 unix_listener stats-writer {
   mode = 077
 }
}

Aki

I put this in 10-master.conf and still get error.
OK /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf seems like a better place. after reboot is
happy

I guess the first thing is to test dovecot is working properly
https://wiki.dovecot.org/TestInstallation
then you use dovecot as mail delivery agent

Re: post-delivery virus scan

2016-11-09 Thread mick crane

I have discovered that many times the virus definitions I use for
scanning messages (ClamAV, with the unofficial signatures
http://sanesecurity.com/usage/linux-scripts/) are updated some time
after my server has received an infected email. It seems the virus
creators are trying to race the virus definition creators to see who
can deliver first; more than half of the infected messages are found
after they’ve been delivered. Great.

To help detect and remove the infected messages after they’ve been
delivered to users’ mailboxes, I created a small script that iterates
the INBOX and Junk mailbox directories, scans recent messages for
viruses, and deletes them if found. The source of my script (run via
cron) is here: https://gitlab.koehn.com/snippets/9

Unfortunately Dovecot doesn’t like it if messages are deleted (dbox)
out from under it. I tried a doveadm force-resync on the folder
containing the messages, but it seems Dovecot is still unhappy. At
least on the new version (2.2.26.0) it doesn’t crash; 2.2.25 would
panic and coredump when it discovered messages had been deleted.

I’m wondering if there’s a better way to scan recent messages and
eradicate them so the Dovecot isn’t upset when it happens. Maybe using
doveadm search? Looking for suggestions.

leave an empty message behind with the same name as deleted message ?

You're right, I didn't do it.

I usually don't use this command, I look at the log file which seems
to
have more details. Try > looking there for more diagnostics. Also,
look at

your MTA's logs as well.

I'll try to locate them.
Thank you.

I always install "locate" and whenever I change anything do as root
"/usr/bin/updatedb"
then you can type
"locate *.log"

This is actually one of the first thing I tried when I saw outgoing
mails worked. I also tried sending mails from another address, hoping
to receive an error message back, but nothing got received.
I now think the INBOX itself doesn’t exist, as logs seem to mention
and someone else already told. Then, of course, I’d get 0 existing
mails since the INBOX doesn’t exist.

Thanks.
