So there's some weird dovecot -n bug that doesn't show the dovecot
version if the 'Warning: fd limit...' warning is output?

Is the missing version line a copy/paste error? Or did the warning
obscure it somehow?

/etc/passwd doesn't have passwords nowadays. They're in /etc/shadow.
Either user passdb shadow or passdb pam.

I am trying to do authentication with /etc/passwd and something is not working 
right for me. Pls help!

When i try to authenticate via pop3, I get: -ERR Authentication failed.
