If you are, using
service imap {
extra_groups = somegroup
}
can help.
Also you could try
service imap {
executable = /usr/bin/strace -o /tmp/imap -f -ff /usr/lib/dovecot/imap
}
might be useful

When it's the OS providing the error code to dovecot, it's very unlikely to be anything in dovecot itself. Hi I am trying to move my storage of email on a smb3 mounted volume.
