Depending on your setup, abilities and intended results, you might also wish consider offlineimap and imapsync, with which you could maintain an updated offsite copy going forwards. P. The host is just moving our VPS to new hardware so no update of our software is being done. (Though I need to do that myself when my schedule allows.) >

I would say it should be ok as long as its going to be the same setup, but if you are expecting to upgrade dovecot or any other related package, I would then recommend to perform upgrades before migrating and taking the backup, so to guarantee everything is going to be working.
