Hey, great, you had me worried. So maybe we should go and add it to the installer. I have time to work with it today and tomorrow. We can have the installer log the current status of the explorer.exe key and then set it to 0 if they person agrees. Re: [DQSD-Users] Dave search bar and active content blocking by XP SP2
Indeed, the SP2 Local Machine Zone Lockdown is blocking DQSD from running every reboot. To fix it change (in Start>Run>"regedit"): HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \Software\Microsoft \Internet Explorer\main \FeatureControl\FEATURE_LocalMachine_Lockdown\Explorer.exe to 0 and If It Exists: HKEY_CURRENT_USER \Software\Microsoft \Internet Explorer\main \FeatureControl\FEATURE_LocalMachine_Lockdown\Explorer.exe to 0 per http://msdn.microsoft.com/security/productinfo/XPSP2/securebrowsing/locallockdown.aspx I don't see any concession to whitelist DQSD running in explorer as it is, we should probably add a prompt to the installer and have it execute this key change, maybe only if SP2 is installed. I tried to send a registry or a zipped registry file but sourceforge has stringent listserv attachment policies apparently. Hey Tom, > I'm wondering why "dictionarypop innocuous" finds nothing? No idea, `dictionarypop (or :? on mine) test` works ok :). But the dictionary XML service I coded it to seems to have lots of holes. Not sure if they were there originally or not (e.g. "sparse" too)...It went through some sort of owner change. I adapted dp to load normal sites like dictionary.com too with "anypop" but I only posted an early test version of it to the devel list. > Note, there is a spare '<' in the popup message window towards the bottom. Wow, that would be nice from a cross-platform standpoint especially. Theres no such thing as DQSD on Mac OS X or Linux. Also on undomesticated computers where one hasn't managed to sneak DQSD onto yet (labs, etc.). I'd imagine you wouldn't be able to use the javascript coding in DQSD. I'd personally rather you didn't try: javascript hacks are mostly ugly for websites and it would defeat the whole crossplatform advantage. You'd be ditto'ing the large base of ideas and search archive which still sounds great. Some sites are archived back to 1998 and farther. Enhanced searches: 'pg' - added new switch to search on Tecriture.com's Ebook Initiative site. It will automatically convert any book in the PG database to HTML and let you download it. Very useful for improved formatting. 'af' - changed the default search to use an GET instead of a POST. Re: [DQSD-Users] Dictionary Pop
My dictionary portion of DictionaryPop didn't work for about 3-4 days a few weeks ago. I'm not sure if they have a quota (per IP?) that you can't exceed for each portion but it just returned the 'word not found' error for a while. But, DictionaryPop is a web service hosted by mybubble.com, I just checked their site and found: CUPERTINO, CA - September 21, 2002 MyBubble announced today that the company is changing its name and will be called Extensio Software Inc., with immediate effect. This change follows the company's decision to evolve its product into the preferred information integration platform catering to professionals to whom information access is of crucial importance. "We have morphed from MyBubble to Extensio, the enterprise class solution that dramatically improves accessibility of data stores," said Vipin Samar - CEO, Extensio. "Our new identity reflects our focus on the customer segment we serve - Enterprises that need to deal with greater amounts of information each day, whether from their enteprise data stores or from the internet, and want to extend the value of their information assets at all user touch points." That probably accounts for any recent down time. If it turns out that the web service goes under there's another dictionary web service host I can try to work in but we'll probably lose the thesaurus and stock flags. I might need to update the add-on at some point to fix the domain too but the old version is working okay for me now. If there happens to be a quota there's a chance it's possible to get around by registering a username with them and having a set up similiar to the way GoogleSpell requires a google id. Right now it is set up to use the anonymous public service. Thad Kerosky DP creator David A. [DQSD-Users] DictionaryAPI popup reference add-on.
Speaking of...I just finished putting together an add-on based off of the GoogleSpell one which uses SOAP and WSDL to grab dictionary, thesaurus, and stock information and pop it up like a qsfind. My prefered shortcut for it is ':?' as the dictionaries are ':' anyway ; ). Some minor changes which might be a good idea to make in GoogleSpell would be to change the names of the *WebServiceResult functions to something like *GoogleSpellWebServiceResult. I ended up spending a lot of time trying to track that conflict down. The names sort of look like preset functions. More Soap feeds can be found for a lot of things at these urls: http://soapclient.com/uddi/uddi.sri?requestname=get_xmethods and http://www.xmethods.com/ Some other services that could be added with these reasonably simply: Weather, point to point distances (asked about on here), babelfish translation and a lot of other things. Some of the stuff on the lists above are not public accessible, some are pay, and you'll have to check thier individual homepage sometimes too tell. While searching around for this I also ran across a IP address > Location converter ('pinp') which is kind of fun to play with. Unlike some others I've seen it does more than just a whois. I modified GoogleSpell quick and dirtily so that it uses popups notifications instead of alerts too. Is there going to be any limiting factor on searches? I've always thought of javascript as slow and taxing. Will it noticeably hurt performance of lower spec PCs to have a lot more searches? This doesn't really directly effect me but I don't really think plug-ins with the searches are the answer since I've found a load of new resources through the current default searches. Is there a plan to deal with this? Installer options maybe? There are a lot of searches JB pointed to over at (http://www.metrocast.net/~peteh/toolbar.html) which would be handy in the default package as well if the owner would like to contribute them and theres no trouble adding them. As I commented in the source there's another potentially useful PG search which appears to hold all formats (PDF, HTML, .pbd, .lit, and plaintext) of (possibly) all texts which is at http://ns2.tecriture.com/cgi-bin/ebi_search.cgi?action=search but the search form there seems to rely on a broken line of javascript which I'm not familiar with and the search fails in all the browsers I have tried (Moz, IE6, Opera, links). Also, Wish I could've gotten some background before posting so I'd know that I'm doing this right but the archive for this list seems to be having trouble. Thad Kerosky Project Gutenberg Search the Project Gutenberg Public Domain online book collection. Usage: pg <book title> [/author] [{/reader | /dmoz}] Switches: /author - Search for an Author instead of a Title /reader - Search for Public Domain books on the more friendly but less complete http://www.pgreader.org";>pgreader.org. HTML formatted version of some books are also offered here. /dmoz - Search through the Project Gutenberg book titles and authors on the Open Directory Project. The author switch is ignored. It seems to be faster and more accurate than the official search sometimes. Examples: pg Alice In Wonderland pg Dostoevsky /author pg Sun Tzu /author /reader pg Man in the Iron Mask /reader pg Time Machine /dmoz Other http://www.gutenberg.net/ Thad Kerosky http://promo.net/cgi-promo/pg/t9.cgi";> ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/docs/books/gutenberg/"; /> http://www.pgreader.com/apps/proc_query.asp";> http://search.dmoz.org/cgi-bin/search";> <![CDATA[ function pg(q) { var searchID = 0; var AuthorQuery = false; if( nullArgs("pg",q) ) return false; else { var args = parseArgs(q, "reader, dmoz, author"); if( args.switches.length > 0 ) for( var j=0; j<args.switches.length; j++ ) switch( args.switches[j].name ) { case "reader": searchID = 1; break; case 'dmoz': document.dmozsearch.search.value = args.q; searchID = 2; break; case "author": AuthorQuery = true; break; } } if (!AuthorQuery) { document.pgsearch.title.value = args.q; document.readersearch.title_txt.value = args.q; } else { document.pgsearch.author.value = args.q; document.readersearch.author_txt.value = args.q; } switch (searchID) { case 1: submitForm(readersearch); break; case 2: submitForm(dmozsearch); break; default: submitForm(pgsearch); break; } //for some reason if I don't clear these they show in the next query of a different type. //document.pgsearch.author.value = ""; //document.readersearch.author_txt.value = ""; //document.pgsearch.title.value = ""; //document.readersearch.title_txt.value = ""; } ]]>
