[drakelist] MN2700 coax mod

2004-08-28 Thread LeeCraner
A couple of you have asked about my mod to the MN2700 to adapt positions 3 and 4 of the MN2700 antenna switch for coax feedlines.  This mod is for those of us that don't have the B1000 balun and don't run balanced feedlines or long wire antennas.

Open up the MN2700 and unsolder the three leads at the Fiberglas terminal board that connects to the B1000.  Remove the Fiberglas board and save it so you can restore your MN2700 someday in the future.

Fabricate a replacement board of the same size out of scrap aluminum.  Mount two SO 259 connectors to the board.  Mount the board into the MN2700 in place of the Fiberglas board (the SO 259 connectors should just clear the rear panel cutout--thank you Drake).  Solder the two leads from the antenna switch to the SO259 (leave the grounded lead floating).  That's it.

Here's a picture of the additional SO259 connectors:

Great job, Lee.

There is nothing I like better than to see a totally reversable mod. You are truly a man after my own heart.

[drakelist] tectured paint experiment that worked!

2004-08-28 Thread James E. Lanier

I first stripped away that disgusting sticky
paint!
I heated the cabinet in the oven at about 220F. I
then applied brown primer spray. The primer boils on contact causing a rough
surface. I let the primer dry. I then applied alternating very light coats of
gray then black textured paint until I matched the shade of my other equipment.
Unbelievable! it is almost a perfect match.

How can this be?  There is no gray on Drake
cabinets?

When was this sticky paint used?  I have a TR-7 with
a gray like appearance which smells to boot and another with a great looking
black like color that sits majestically on my operating desk.

Tnx,

I have had a few e-mails concerning
this

I removed the sticky paint with Methyl Ethyl
Ketone, brush, cloths and sandpaper.

The primer is Rustoleum 1967 Red Primer

The Paint:
Black Rustoleum 7220
Dark Pewter Rustoleum 7221

Good Luck!

I have a TR7 top section with a few extra holes in the
top (no idea why) that one could patch -- paint is OK
but could use an overspray to really look nice. Speaker
grille material is nice.
If someone can use it I'd be happy to send it along for
a few bucks to cover shipping, or will swap it for a
spare lightning/surge/static antenna input "fuse".

The thought was fantastic - a velvet like, satin textured finish!
Unfortunately, the paint was lousy, and thus was
born "sticky paint" - one of life's great lessons!

Not sure, I purchased an ms7 to match my TR5 and
the ms7 had the sticky paint. My TR5 is the gray/black. The sticky paint
ms7 was darker... before I made it match my TR5.
Maybe the early tr7s were using the bad paint. I
think there is a website that describes the differences between the early and
late versions but I do not know the url.

You guys who have never seen "sticky paint" have missed an experience!
New, it was not sticky, had a velvet "feel",
and looked really sharp. We replaced it with the vinyl clad stuff you
see today.

Oh well - time marches on!

Methyl Ethyl Ketone aka MEK is really bad stuff.  Use it outside only and don't inhale the fumes.
