Thanks for the reply Garey,

The end result is the choke shorting out against the shield, possibly.

You will likely get several different answers to this one, but I prefer the
Sprague Orange Drop series caps for these in my 4 line stuff. Mouser had
them last time I needed some ( www.mouser.com ). No financial connection,
just good service and they don't have a minimum!!

Dave -
These are all "paper" caps, and as such may be replaced with just about
any of the popular "Orange Drop" style caps. Polyester, metalized film,
polypropylene, film & foil, etc.

Generally speaking, capacitors smaller than 1 microfarad are almost
always "paper" capacitors and those larger than 1 uF are almost always
"electrolytic" capacitors. Electrolytics are also "polarized" and will
have some sort of marking to identify the Positive (+) or Negative (-) end.

The ONLY thing this choke does is filter the 24V supply to the PLL
Loop
amplifier chip, so the VCO was yanked way out of it's "normal" range.

I've used one of the MFJ/Bencher things on my TR7. Don't know the model
number, it's downstairs in a box right now and I'm too lazy to go look
for it. Grid block is for "vintage" tube rigs. Direct should be
appropriate for the TR7.

They state the fact this is a homebrew
item not manufactured by Drake. I wonder why they posted that item there in the
first place seeing it has nothing to do with Drake except it probably started
out as a MS7 speaker cabinet.

[drakelist] L7 power supply upgrade

2005-02-24 Thread Mike Bryce
Boys and girls...

Is there enough interest to remake the two pcbs hiding in the high voltage power supply used in the drake L4 amplifiers.

just doing a rough draft of what is needed, new high voltage caps, new higher current higher voltage diodes and the ability to us radial caps instead of axial ones

rough price will be about $150 for the complete two board set with all parts

Is there interest?

if so, perhaps we will move forward with the project.

if not, then say so.. and I'll take it off the stove

Well finally
Wanted to post the resolution for the archives in case anyone else has this
problem.
Many thanks to Bill Frost who had the final answer, and Garey Barrell, and
Peter VE3AX for some good troubleshooting suggestions.
The rig showed 96800.0 on powerup(20m and below) and drifted down
slightly. VFO did not change anything. Counter worked properly in "ext"mode.
All voltages from p/s board were OK. 10R and 10T on main board were ok and
switched properly xmit/ rcv. All oscillator freqs were there and right on.
The problem was choke RFC508 which is in the 24v circuit to the VCO
board. It is on the VCO board and is in a position that could be easily
damaged inserting the board. Replaced that, fired things up, and all is
well. Will align and put on the air..
Again thanks to all who helped. This is a great list and in my case, a
