RE: [drakelist] T4XC and TR7

2006-07-10 Thread Frank Woolfe

Gang,

Thanks for assistance on T4XC appears the meters are
very sluggish, I will have a look at the output with a scope and go from
there

Another question, having a look at a TR7 early S/n
"44XX" fitted with FA7 fan, 1.8Khz SSB, 6Khz AM, 500Hz CW Filters, NB7
Blanker and 7077 Mike also has RV7 VFO and PS75 PSU, extender cards and
original manuals looks in really nice clean and tidy condition any idea of
what the line up would be worth??

Regards,

IF you are seeing 500 mA of plate current, you'll probably find that the
meter shunt resistor has gone up in value. It's the 3.3 ohm, 1/2 W
resistor on the relay board under the chassis. The problem is that this
same meter is used to set the 100 mA idling plate current of the finals,
and if the meter is reading incorrectly, the bias is also set
incorrectly, affecting the linearity of the transmitter. While you're
in there, it's also a good idea to check the 15 ohm, 1W cathode
resistors for the finals. They also change value with age and should be
matched within 5% of each other for best linearity.

The TUNE signal is developed by converting the Mic input stage to an
oscillator, so there isn't much different between the TUNE and AF signal
path. What microphone are you using? It _must_ be a Hi-Z mic, such
as a crystal or ceramic. A dynamic mic will usually require a step-up
transformer, sometimes internal and switchable on the mic stand. A
steady whistle into the mic should produce the same output power as the
TUNE mode. If not, I'd suspect the mic (correct Z?) or wiring. With
normal speech, about one half the max plate current _as read on the
meter_ is about right. A scope (or peak-reading wattmeter) would show
that the true peaks are at the max power level as TUNE.

Depends on the duty cycle of your voice. These radios have no speech
processing or compression in them at all, so that could be about right. What
can you "whistle it up" to? The only way to be sure is to look at the output
on a scope. With my voice, I typically see 20-30 watts on voice peaks with no
processing for 100 watts PEP output on any unprocessed radio.

True, but there are certian brands/models of (mostly vintage American made)
mics that do follow the red=PTT, white=audio, shield=audio ground, and
black=PTT return format. It is best to verify visually or with an ohm-eater
though.

There is no standard among microphone manufacturers. They sometimes change
color codes to suit the lowest priced cord vendor and they also make
mistakes. Obviously, they don't go out and buy a sample of every rig made so
they take educated guesses and they are sometimes wrong. This is why it's
not good to rely on a formulaic approach: green goes here, blue goes there,
etc. Far better to look at the function of each wire and then decide. The
T-4XC wiring is about the simplest thing there is. Only 2 wires and a
ground. Obviously one of the pins is PTT and the other must be the mic. The
problem occurs in the variety of microphones and the color codes involved.
Opening the mic and looking at the switch functions and the color wires
attached reveals all.
