You know, Jim - I don't know how they match up size-wise, but it looks just

electric razers. If they fit, maybe a little fabrication could get you that

[drakelist] DR-7 Display Problem

2008-01-10 Thread J J Connelly

"J J Connelly" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> made an utterance to the drakelist gang
--
Hello all,
the digital display on my TR-7 has decided to go crazy.

The digits have begun to change at random and frequently go completely
blank. This problem exists whether switched to either an INT or EXT source;
it is intermittent and the display can be made to behave for a short time if
I
play around with the connectors at P1 and P2 or if I move the body of the
DR-7

very slightly (and carefully) or if I switch the rig off/on.

At all times the actual frequency is stable and the full coverage functions
of the DR-7 are OK.

I'm a complete rookie when it comes to digging into this kind of circuitry,
but here's

where I've reached...
Checking around on the DR-7 with meter and scope, supply voltages are OK;
the scope shows the output from the both INT and EXT amplifiers on the
output side of

U9011(pins 2 and3) and switching correctly.

I suspect U9014 may have gone faulty. The scope shows the 500Khz at pin 14,
but with an intermittent output. If there are pulses coming out, the display
is fine,
else it's blank. I can't figure out what causes the change other than the
device has

faulted.

Am I on the right lines or is there somewhere else I should be looking?? Any
ideas

most welcome.

By the way, my version of the DR-7 has 2 x 1N4148's on the output from U9014
and is different from the diagram in my manual.

Many thanks,
Joe Connelly

Re: [drakelist] DR-7 Display Problem

2008-01-10 Thread k9sqg
I would start with a removal of the DR-7 board, then SPARANINGLY apply DeOxit
to each pin, and then reseat the board. Then I would see what happens and start
making voltage and signal checks.? Too, it might be informative to see if the
frequency actually changes, or if it is just the display.

Re: [drakelist] DR-7 Display Problem

2008-01-10 Thread LeeCraner
Joe:

While there are other causes for the "flashing digits" the most common is
simply dirty connectors on the DR-7 and/or one of the boards immediately below
the DR-7 (I'm at work and forget which it is).

Pull the plugs from the DR-7, the one screw that holds it in place and the
one cable that runs through the DR-7, then pull the board (be careful and don't
damage the display LED's). Then pull and reseat each of the boards below.
Remount and reconnect the DR-7 (this takes a bit of finesse to get it to seat
properly with the display LED's properly positioned).

This usually solves the problem you're experiencing.

[drakelist] WTS: TR4

I have a TR4 for sale that I inherited from my father. It's been in storage
for a number of years and I don't have the equipment (variac) or experience
to power it up and test it properly. I'm new to the hobby (but I'm old :),
with lots of new vintage equipment now (some of which I'm keeping and some
I'm selling) but no shack, antenna or license yet. The TR4 was working good
and he was using it right before it went into storage. The serial number
is 30049 and it is apparently one of the early models with the built in,
hardwired noise blanker vs. the optional plug in one. Cosmetically, it
looks average to me for its age (I'm no expert at ratings), the case has a
little rust near the back and could use a touch up. The face plate and
knobs all look very good. I have some spare tubes to go with it. If anyone
might be interested, feel free to ask questions either here or via email.
I have some pics and can take more. Feel free to email me with any offers.
I'll ship it anywhere in the US, local buyers are welcome as that would
save the packing and shipping hassle, I'm in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

[drakelist] RE: TR4

2008-01-10 Thread Steve Aronson
BTW, as a few people have asked in their emails, I do have the original TR4
manual and an AC3 power supply. I might even have the original receipts,
I'll check. All of the tubes are in their original boxes but some look new
and some look used to me. I also have an FT-101E and a Dentron 160-10L amp
here that use tubes also so I'll have to go thru the box of tubes and see
which ones are for the TR4 and make a list.

ATT apparently has a cut line from the tornados and our DSL in south Florida
keeps going in and out, so I apologize in advance if I'm slow to answer
emails.

Ron Wagner <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> made an utterance to the drakelist gang

Can anyone tell me if their RV7 shows the following symptom?

When you trip the TX relay (either with PTT or VOX) the TR7 frequency
display jumps in frequency. It seems to always be up in frequency and
anywhere from 200 to 700 hertz. It then very quicky returns to the
frequency I am dialed to. My internal PTO does not seem to show this
symptom.

I can not see any variance in the voltages on the RV7. I had to use an
FET analog meter because the o-scope is playing dead :-(

Maybe the voltage change is fast enough that the damping on my FET VOM is
missing it? I do not have the RIT on.

Garey Barrell <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> made an utterance to the drakelist gang

It's smaller than either of you think!

The pins are 0.093" in diameter. Some have made a connector from #11
solid copper wire. Various schemes have been tried with plastic and/or
epoxy to build up a connector body around the two pieces of wire. #11
wire is 0.0907", and tinning it with solder should make it just about
right. I would tin it to ward off corrosion. Unfortunately, #11 is NOT
a common size (to say the least!). #10 is 0.1019", which is a little
large, and is probably what the "plug builders" used. I don't know if
that is large enough to damage the female connector or not. The pins
are spaced 0.350" c-c. A better choice might be some 3/32" dia (0.0937)
brass tubing from the hobby shop. It would give a more reliable
electrical connection to the wire. Think that's what I'd do.

By the way, on the L-4B parts lists, February 1, 1971 they were
described as:

Plug, VOX Relay, 2 Pin..$0.20

Is that what they call "inflation"? :)

Peronally, I'd just change it over to another type of jack. This is one case
where "keeping things original" defies all sense, common or otherwise.

Jim -

Yeah, which is why Drake offered a "conversion kit" for the amp that
consisted of a small aluminum plate with two holes that lined up with
the original connector mounting hardware, and one hole in the center for
an RCA jack!

That connector went missing almost as soon as they designed it in.
All because they wanted to have TWO isolated pins rather than ONE pin
and chassis ground.

The solution there would be to mount the RCA connector to a non-metallic
plate. Or, use the TV twinlead jack. Maybe they were afraid some users would
plug the radio into thier TV antenna...
