It's the mic plug that's .206 for aircraft. It's been standard for
quite a long time. I had to find a .206 jack to build an interface box
to connect my Telex ANC headset to the TR7, but found a new stock jack
on that e-place for reasonable money. Better than cutting the plug off
an expensive headset. The headphone jack is standard 1/4" stereo, and
nowdays the aircraft headsets can be operated mono or stereo. I was
thinking of wiring mine to have a spotting RX in one ear and the main
RX in another, but that could get confusing... :)

Re: [Drakelist] Microphone Jack Trivia

2008-08-17 Thread K8AC - k8ac
Actually, a good question and one that I've never seen a good explanation for.
A few years ago, I bought a new aviation headset to use with my station and
guess what? It had a 1/4 inch plug for either the mic or headphone (don't
recall which) and a .207 Drake-like plug on the other pair. Apparently that's
been standardized over the years so any headset can plug into any aircraft
radio (at least for private planes). Whether or not that started before Drake
began using the smaller plug, I don't know.

I don't recall seeing this question asked but why did the Drake Co. choose to
use a smaller mic jack on the T-4 line? Surely someone out there knows the
answer.

Please feel free to direct any comments, including flames, for asking a such
trivial question, off the reflector. I've already have used up too much
bandwidth.

Re: [Drakelist] Microphone Jack Trivia

2008-08-17 Thread W4AWM
Do you recall the grand old days of movie serials when they had mics plugged
into the headphone jacks of SX-42s and similar receivers. They could work MARS
(the planet) anytime they wanted with no QRM, QSB or TVI! They could even
work mobile rigs in cars that only had a microphone and 96" whip, but no
control
head or radio in sight. Sometimes, they forgot to use an antenna. Must have
been one of those early mobiles where the antenna was under the running board.
I'll bet they got reports of dirty signals!

Hi,
It's generally thought that the reason was so you wouldn't plug the mic
into the headfone or key jack & vice versa. Damage could occur to the mic
element in some cases.

Yes, others have done it, (1/4 inch jack), and when I acquired the radios, I
put the original size jack back into the radio. The smaller size plugs are
so easy to find/buy as they are used in aircraft, so I can't understand why
someone would screw up a vintage radio like this with such a modification.
(Why not go to the hardware store and buy/install a wall outlet jack on the
radio as a mic jack as they are really easy to obtain). A can opener will
"widen the hole for you". While one is at it, paint it "pink too". That
will give it a really nice "touch".

Lighten-up, Lee!

It's JUST a radio, and NOT the Mona Lisa! Any modification --- in my humble
opinion --- is a GOOD one, IF it might mean that the radio will be regularly
USED, vs. waiting around on a dusty basement shelf for a deserving recipient
in a museum somewhere, long after its owner has joined the ranks of the
Silent Keys...

I made the change, I made note of the change in the T-4X manual, and it
never cost me a farthing...isn't that in keeping with a noble Amateur
tradition...?!

With 1/4" jacks being so common, the thought never occured to me. I did
do the jack swap to a Galaxy rig once, but never to Drakes. .206 plugs
are not that hard to find either, if you look around.

[Drakelist] T-4X Mic Jack

2008-08-17 Thread EP Swynar
Good Morning All,

I just finished reading about the whys & wherefores of Drake's decision to use
a slightly smaller phone jack as the mic terminal in their T-4 series of
transmitters...

I had no idea of this until I tried plugging a "regular" 1/4" mic plug into the
jack.

Looking in behind the front of the chassis, I decided that I could safely bore
out the opening of the jack to a more user-friendly (i.e. common) 1/4" barrel,
and I proceeded to do just that utilizing the "B.F.A.I" concept (a.k.a. "Brute
Force And Ignorance", Hi Hi).

I proceeded slowly, and surely enough, it ended successfully.

Now I just have to be careful as to which plug I insert into which jack, as
VE3EFJ warns...

I wonder if anyone else reading this has done the very same thing, but for
reasons unknown, will not "...go public" with a pronouncement...?!
