I had some of that PTFE oil in a small dropper for my pocket protector

I like the PTFE (Teflon) based oil that can be found (sometimes) at Ace
Hardware, or at Radio Shack for more money. Comes in a nerdy little pocket
oiler that will fit in your pocket protector.

Yeah, I kinda noticed that. Not a big deal, there's always something else to
work on as I flip the oiler over a few times and wait for it to self-remix. ;)

Mike,
If the bandswitch is tight its possibly because someone used contact cleaner
that contained a lubricant and it swelled the wafers. Get a can of degreaser
and hose down the wafers really good. Sometimes this will evaporate away the
lubricant.

Hi Mike -

See below.

Another TR-4 appears to be fubar. No receive, can't hear calibrator.

Voltage checks.? There is a "fuse" resistor right at the +250V input,
(27 ohms, depending upon which of the eight versions it is.) Filament fuse?

Another TR-4, when the mic gain control is advanced, the receivers howls.

Check for shorts on the RCVR control line.

One TR3, everyone is 20 over s-9. A simple adjustment?

Start with S-Meter adjustment from the manual. Possibly a gassy 12BA6
in the receive IF. Check voltages on the AF Output stage, it's one side
of the S-Meter bridge.

I don't have RG-62 to hook up between a TX4B and a R4B. Would a hunk
of RG-58 do?

RG-58 "will do", as will a standard AF cable, but the receiver
sensitivity and/or transmit power will be reduced when controlling from
the "other" unit. RG-59 is a little better, or low CAPACITY mic cable
is best. RG-62 is OK, but stiff and cumbersome to work with. Also
prone to shorting from soldering or bending too sharply.

I put in new blue plastic in the TR3, but its not really the blue that
I think it should be. Do those overpriced blue LED make any difference?

The "aftermarket" blue filters are all too "blue", much darker than the
original blue, more like the TR-7. The "real" blue is a blue-green with
a much softer, lighter blue. Lee Lighting 172 film is an exact match to
the original color, and a two square foot sheet is less than $10. I
don't like the LED lights, they are uneven, a strange color, and just
don't look right. If you replace the 47 bulbs with 755s, they'll
probably last the rest of the life of the radios.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year Mike

One thing I've found useful with Drake gear especially, is wiggle each tube
in its socket to re-establish connection. Drake used tube sockets that
seem to be prone to opening up as you describe (Particularly if it used to
work ok).

That won't fix em all, but I bet it starts you down the road on some of the
herd.
