Re: [Drakelist] Restoration vs. Refurbishment

2010-12-27 Thread LOU GIOVANETTI

Call HAL at Land Air Communications at landair...@aol.com

Not only can Hal bring back ANY radio to life he has restored my R-4b to
working specs. BUT WAIT THERE IS MORE! Hal also has a complete stock of
DRAKE equipment for sale along with most every other brand of radio's.
Give Hal a call you will be amazed of his operation! TRULY AMAZED! If
Hal don't have it it never existed!

Does anyone here recall that person's name & information?

Thanks to all that have replied! The fellow I was looking for is indeed Ron
Baker, WB4HFN. However, Lou, KB2DHG, has also pointed me to Hal, K6DPZ at Land
Air Communications http://www.landaircom.com/ as another resource. I'd never
heard of Hal's operation and thought perhaps some other on this listserv would
like to know about him.

[Drakelist] Cooling Fan Orientation

2010-12-27 Thread Diane and Edward Swynar
Hi Guys,

All this recent chatter on the Reflector about the orientation of cooling
fans---i.e. to "...force cooling air in, versus to draw hot air
out"---convinced me that I should re-evaluate the small 12 VDC unit that I'd
mounted sometime ago atop the enclosure of my Drake T-4X...

Mind you, the area all around the cage shielding the final PA tubes was ALWAYS
cool, thanks to the presence of the fan...but if the rest of the components
inside the rig would benefit from a fan that drew air OUT of it, rather than
forcing air INTO it, so much the better...

Well, to my complete & utter surprise, the colling fan already WAS installed
such that it would blow AWAY from the 6JB6 tubes, rather than directly at them!
I was amazed at how very COOL that area of the rig always was since I
incorporated that fan---proof positive that this style of air "extraction" is,
indeed, very effective...

"FWIW"...here's hoping everyone had a great "Drake" Christmas...!

Re: [Drakelist] Cooling Fan Orientation

2010-12-27 Thread Diane and Edward Swynar
Hi Garey,

Any way you might put it, the doggone thing WORKS! Hi Hi.

I think it's well worth whatever minor inconvenience it might be to install the
fan.

Oh yes, one final note: I found that the fan was a tad too noisey & distracting
"as is", so I put a small voltage dropping resistor in the "+" lead from the
wall-wart, dropping the voltage to some 9-10 VDC at the fan---and the cooling
is still effective!

Why not give those precious 6JB6s every advantage for a long & prolific life
that you can...?!

[Drakelist] Need tube num,ber for R-4B

2010-12-27 Thread kc9cdt
Hi gang..working on a R-4b with 9 tubes...lots of corrosion so I can't
read some of the tube types. Letering is worn off tube.
Lots of audo distortion and weak output...think it may be the final AF
amp.

It looks like it might be a 6EH5??

What is the final AF amp tube?

The audio output tube is the 6EH5. If you are really "working on a R4B",
you really need at the minimum the manual, which should be downloadable on
the internet. Really should have Garey's CD with all the manuals and parts
locators for the things you WILL run across during the fix. It pays for
itself very quickly. Google k4oah.com and see what I mean!! No connection,
other than a friend of Garey's and very satisfied owner of most of his CD's!

[Drakelist] R-4B with bad audio

2010-12-27 Thread kc9cdt

Hi gang,
OK, I have a R-4B with kind of distorted audio and you have to turn it
up almost max to get good listening level.

I don't have a spare tube (V7)
The resistance of PIN 1 to gnd is 150 ohm and the voltage is 7.6 VDC.
These are out of spec.

What do you think ? is it the tube, or ??

Just thought I would pick your brain before getting in deep.
I have a photo copyed book, but the schematic is pretty poor.

Either way I need to get GArey's CD (I have the C line one)

Re: [Drakelist] R-4B with bad audio

2010-12-27 Thread Curt Nixon

Hi Lee.

If I were a betting guy, I would lay odds on the cathode bypass cap as
being the culprit. If I recall, it is one section of the chassis
mounted can in the R4B. You can test the fix very easily by just
paralleling another electrolytic from the cathode to ground and see if
it improves. If it does, then remove the bad one from the circuit.

A loss of capacity in that application will do exactly what you are
seeing. I think the small difference in the R to ground is not too big
an issue in this case.
