[Drakelist] SSB filter for the Drake R-4C.

2011-04-25 Thread Bent
Hello All

I am looking for a 2.4 Khz. filter model 5049 for the R-4C receiver.

Are someone able to help, and what is the price level for this type of filter ?

Thanks in advance.

Best regards

 Both are single-ended conventional output.

[Drakelist] tr4 problem on 15 meters

2011-04-25 Thread Karl Corder
Please let me know what the problem is, My TR4 recently will not
work on 15 meters. First the calibrator produced a horrible noise,
like buzzing, rasping, whatever, then the receiver produced the
same type of noise whenever it came across a signal. I have replaced
most all if not all condensers, could this possibly be that the 15 meter crystal
is not working? Thank you in advance very much - WA2OVJ Karl

[Drakelist] My sorry TR-3

2011-04-25 Thread PonyTom

Hi Gang,
I must apologize. I've been corresponding with Garey for some time
about the S Meter problem with my TR-3. We went through all the values, and
readings throughout the circuit with only one minor abnormality, which I
corrected to no avail. The next step was to trace out the entire circuit.
About that time smoke was appearing. Burned the zeroing pot, and the 220 Ohm
resistor at the meter. further circuit tracing brought me right to the meter
itself. It is not open, just smoky and now bound up. I am fearful about
installing a new meter not knowing the exact location of the short circuit.
Not to mention that I don't have a spare.

The meter is probably shot, the high current will have
swelled the insulation on the wire in the coil and probably
also warped the coil.
I suggest the following: first, if Garey has a disc for
this unit it will have high res schematics in it. It should
also have photos. I would print out the schematic very
large. Kinko's or other service place can do this for a
couple of dollars. Make more than one copy. Get a set of
colored pencils or highlighters and trace out the circuit on
the shematic. Drake schematics tend to look like maps of the
Chicago frieght yards so its easy for your eye to loose its
place.
Once you have the circuit traced out check the physical
wiring for a solder butch or flake or a bit of wire that has
bridged something. If there are high res photos compare
what's on them to what you see. The current has to be coming
from somewhere. Disconnect the meter and see how much
voltage is on the terminals, they may give you a clue as to
the source. To burn out the zero pot and series resistor
requires a fair amount of current.
There are people who can repair meters but if the coil
is burned as I suspect about the only choice you have is to
replace it.
I have not looked at the schematic myself so can't be
more specific.
The photos in Garey's discs helped me to discover the
source of a completely frustrating problem in a T-4XB.
Wiring which looked correct in the chassis turned out to be
wrong. When changed to the way it was in the photos the
thing worked.

[Drakelist] Using T-4XB on 30 meters

2011-04-25 Thread WA2CLX
I'm in the process of restoring a T-4XB and want to obtain additional
crystals to tune the WARC bands.

Reading through the T-4XB manual, I could use the group's help clearing
up a couple questions about the correct crystal frequency to choose, and
how the T-4XB might interact in transceive mode with the R-4B on the
30meter band.

The T-4XB manual states that due to either lower than desired output or
spurious emissions, certain frequencies should not be used, e.g. 10.5 to
12.0 MHz. Given the 30meter band is 10.1 to 10.15 MHz, on the surface
this should not pose a problem.

However, the crystal selection chart indicates between 9.0 and 10.5 MHz,
depending on the crystal frequency chosen, there are numerous do not
use between frequency segments. For example, for a useable frequency of
10.0-10.2 MHz, a crystal frequency of 20.8 MHz is recommended, but a 'do
not use' range of 9.9-10.2 MHz is stated (outside the ham band anyway).
In order to figure the correct operating frequency, one takes the dial
frequency in KHz and adds it to 9.7MHz. --- which I believe means when
the dial is at 400KHz, you're really at 10.1MHz. Also, assuming I can
tune to 550 KHz on the dial, I should be able to tune the whole 30meter
band. For those that use a T-4XB on 30meters, did I get this right?

My R-4B, on the other hand, indicates to tune the 10.0-10.5 MHz range, a
crystal frequency of 21.1 MHz is recommended. This may be OK for the
receiver, but for the T-4XB, if a 21.1 MHz crystal is used, the
recommended useable frequencies are from 10.25-10.5 MHz (outside the 30
meter band), with a 'do not use between' frequency segment of 10.1-10.25
MHz -- which includes part of the 30meter band!

When pairing the R-4B and T-4XB for transceive operation on
30meterswhat is the correct manner to do this, and does the receiver
governing transceive cause transmit problems in this band (given the
receive crystal frequency is 21.1 and not 20.8 MHz)? If you want to
transceive, does this mean only the transmitter should be used to
determine frequency?

Thanks for any practical experience and guidance offered.

Phil, WA2CLX
