Thanks Evan,

one of the things I would suggest is to extend the Q & A time by adding 15
minutes or so to the entire forum.

Fellow enthusiasts,

Thanks for the fine attendance of this year's Drake Forum. It was
basically standing room only. We hope that you enjoyed the session and
free prizes. We realize that we broke with tradition and had a beautiful
weekend without rain; sometimes change is good.

Feel free to provide any feedback, questions, comments, constructive
criticism, etc. so that we can benefit from it and make it better each and
every year we are allowed to have the Drake Forum.

We are working on making the video available for all those that were not
able to attend. After editing, we will make an announcement as to the
availability of the video either online, via CD/DVD, or both.

Until next Hamvention, enjoy those Drakes!

For the Drake Forum committee,

Evan, K9SQG

[Drakelist] 2-C PS Cap replacement

2011-05-24 Thread john
Hi Darrel
I haven't seen Hayseed's kit or how it is installed on the 2-C, although I will
need to eventually.

But many do work from the bottom on other rigs just to leave the cans and all
on top looking original if for no other reason than nastalgia; certainly not
deception, since you are going to be so much better off in the end.

God bless

[Drakelist] TR4CW/rit

2011-05-24 Thread K4GM-George
Last night I "exercised" the RCVR/XCVR slide switch on the side of the
radio and it came to life. Seems to work well on 80/40 but 20m is in
need of help. The RF Tune is out of range; i.e., the gain on 20m
increases as I turn CCW but I hit the end of the range before it peaks.
I will align and hope that will make it better. Thanks to Garey et
al for input on fixing the "new" rig.

2011-05-24 Thread Don Cunningham
I would HIGHLY recommend the Hayseed kits, and have done the "under chassis"
trick in the past as well. The kits are clean, and looks original. I have had
excellent luck with them, and you have revived the gear for another 30 to 50
years in the process! Tom's kits look and work as advertised, no problems here
with SEVERAL kits and a good price to boot!

I encountered the same thing and should have thought of
it. I think it might be a good idea to lock the switch in
the XCVR position by means of a length of shim stock held in
place by the cabinet mounting screw a little behind the
switch. Just a length of stock with a hole drilled for the
screw and pushed against the side of the switch. Its _very_
easy to knock it into the wrong position. There is a similar
arrangement on the fixed-frequency crystal switch on the
R-4B. You could lock it with some tape but tape will
eventually come off.

His caps are cans and may be re-stuffed originals since
they have a seam at the top and wires soldered to the tabs.
The advantage is that they fit in the original space. New
caps can certainly be mounted under the chassis but in some
equipment they are hard to fit in. Much Drake stuff is very
tight inside.

Yeah, Drake added a little solder lug under one of the mounting screws,
late. I guess they got tired of responding to 'faint receiver'
complaints!! :-)

Darrel -

The HayseedHamfest caps are ALL NEW construction, including the can,
phenolic washer and terminals. The internal caps are 105 degree rated.
They are drop-in replacements down to the terminal indicators.
Definitely the best 'almost official' replacement.

There had been some question about this. Usually
re-stuffed caps are opened at the bottom not the top. the
cans on Tom's stuff do NOT look used at all. I had some
correspondence with someone who asked about where the seams
were and the nature of the connections. He thought they were
restuffed but Tom talks about a factory making them and, as
said, they look too new to be recycled. I'm glad there has
been a definite clarification. I have Tom's caps for both
Drake and Hallicrafters stuff.
