Kevin,
I have replaced several switches by prying off the bad one, and installing a
new switch by trimming back the mounting tabs, and tack soldering it on. There
are a few different styles of switches so you will need to locate the correct
style. Back in the day Drake used to offer these so check with John Kriner, he

criteria were involved to make them a red dot or ... Possibly core lots? If it tunes up ok I
wouldn't worry about it. Only thing I can think of would be an inability to reach the high end of
10M, or the low end of 160M. I have had to fudge a bit on 10m to avoid having the trimmer adjuster

I never have, but

-how are you making sure you keep w/i the 50 watt PEP limit?

You can keep the mic gain down and reference a PEP reading wattmeter. This
works particularly well if you run an RF speech processor like the SP-75 or
similar. Another method would be to apply a variable negative DC voltage to
the ALC input and adjust so the ALC kicks in at 50 Watts. Very little current
is required, you can do it with a 9V battery connected across a poteniometer.

-is the factory TR7 audio bandwidth w/i the 2.8 Khz channel limitation?

The SSB filter in the TR-7 is 2.4 KHz, so, yes.

-do you just tune 1.5Khz below center channel?

Most 60 Meter charts that I have seen will show a carrier frequency to use to
set your signal on the center of the channel. Since the DR-7 is a true carrier
frequency display, that makes it simple. If you really want to be spot on, you
will need to figure the distance from the TR-7 carrier frequency to the middle
of the 2.4 KHz passband, and use that value for your channel center offset.

-anything else?

Report back on how it goes.

[Drakelist] Setting the bias on a T-4X

2012-02-11 Thread Carl Maniscalco
Hello all--

I'm still new to the Drake world and just today got the T-4X I've been
restoring over the past few months working thanks to one of Garey's CD-ROMs.
I've got a question for the experts, however: I've read the instructions and
set the bias control on my AC-4 so the plate amperes meter on the T-4X reads
.07A. However, when I check the the actual bias voltage with a DMM, it's around
-48 volts rather than the expected -65 volts. If I adjust the voltage to -65 V,
I get about .02A on the meter.

My question is, should I adjust the bias control for the specified voltage or
the specified amperage?

Well, it happens to all of us eventually!

Took the T-4XB off the shelf for a little dusting off and warming up, and
when I turned on, only heard a slight little 'thump' from the AC4 and then
nothing.

Upon closer examination (AC4 supply had just powered one of my TR-4C's so
knew it was good) it turns out the on/off switch 'layer' of the 3 section
pot has failed.

I took it apart, I see how it works - a little 'wishbone' looking copper
strap that gets shoved against 2 contacts to turn on the radio. One end
had broken off.

SO. Anybody out there successfully repaired (or rebuilt) the little
copper wishbone, or grafted a new switch to the back of the dual
potentiometer plus switch stack?

I feel like a watchmaker of late - last week was soldering the spring to
the internal movement of a Swan Mark II amplifier meter, now this?

I can put a switch in a 'SPARE' hole in the back of the transmitter for
on/off, but sure hate to lose the total ORIGINAL function of this
transmitter - other wise in really nice shape!

Any ideas boys and girls??

Re: [Drakelist] Setting the bias on a T-4X

2012-02-11 Thread Ron
Carl,
You should adjust for the correct current. That said, the meter is at best
difficult to read accurately.

The better way is to measure the voltage drop across the cathode resistors. R32
and R33 on my T4XB schematic. First see that they are both still 15 ohms, if
not replace. Then measure the voltage across those resistors while adjusting
the bias. According to ohms law, they should have about .5 volts to be at 33
ma. So 2 tubes each at 33 ma each is 66 ma, which is very close. The little
bit off is still far more accurate than the error in reading the meter.

Re: [Drakelist] Setting the bias on a T-4X

2012-02-11 Thread Garey Barrell

Carl -

Ron's method is very accurate, as long as you verify the resistance of the
cathode resistors.

Part of a restoration usually involves replacing the meter shunt resistor, (R36, with a 1W,) and
then selecting a calibration resistor, (R38,) to make the panel meter read 70 mA (little mark
between 6 and 8 on the meter) when confirmed by Ron's method. Once this is done, you can then rely
on the meter to set the bias.

Yes, you always set for the idle CURRENT, regardless of the BIAS voltage. GOOD PA tubes will just
about all fall within the -60 to -65 volt range. The fact that yours take -48 indicates that one or
both tubes are weak. Once the 15 ohm Cathode resistors are confirmed, you can use those voltage
readings to 'match' a pair of tubes, they should be within 5% of each other for best results.
