[Drakelist] R-4C Antenna Input Direct To Mixer

2012-11-19 Thread Chuck Pool
Hi to all:

This question has to do with the antenna input for the Drake R-4C.

Has anyone tried bypassing the RF amp and feeding the antenna input
directly to the first mixer in the R-4C?

Hi to all Drake fans:
Do you think the Drake R-4C could be modified to accommodate one of these two
class A audio amps and the graphic equalizer?
At present I don't have the schematics for these products.
Here are the three links to look at:

Hi Curt:
Remove the balun and try again without the balun.  Use low power to see if
there is a change.  And, remove the balun and replace with a homebrew balun and
try again.

I did a test on 160 meters and the balun got so hot I could not touch it.
Balun damage is not restricted to 160 meters.  It can occur as high as 10
meters too.

Please let us know what happens.

[Drakelist] Cutting Phenolic and Epoxy Laminates

2010-07-25 Thread Chuck Pool
Hi to all:

I recommend using a diamond coated blade for your table saw to cut phenolic or
expoxy laminate boards.  I cut this stuff allot and the diamond coated saw
blade is what works best for me.  Remember too, phenolic and epoxy laminates
require special dust collection systems designed for this particulate.  This
type of dust is very fine and can pass through the filters of normal dust
collection systems.  It is so fine you cannot see it floating in the air.
Then, your lungs breath it in.

[Drakelist] Drake R4C

2010-05-22 Thread Chuck Pool
Hi to all:

A couple of days ago there was a very loud crack, pop or bang then some
continuous crackling that came from the speaker.  I was in the next room when
this happened.

At present, the receiver will not receive.  The S-meter is pegged to the
right.  When turning the radio on the S-meter smashes against the right side of
meter.  Normal characteristics of the S meter, in the past during warm up, has
been a slow rise to the right and a gentle lowering to the the left.  The S
meter would then settle to S-zero if a dummy load was connected.  The crystal
calibrator cannot be heard now.

When moving volume control there is lots of crackling or scratching noises.

I replaced all tubes in the radio and the above symptoms are still present.  I
did not see any smoke or fire.  During visual inspection on top and bottom of
chassis I did not see any burnt components.

What should I do next?

Hello to all.

Today there was a very loud "Bank and Crack" from the speaker.  There is lots
of scratching noises now coming from the speaker.  The S-meter is now pegged
against the right side of meter, 60db plus, while trying to receive.

What is the best first step I should take to find the problem?

[Drakelist] T4X-C Won't maintain output

2010-01-31 Thread Chuck Pool
Hi to all:
After aligning the T4X-C the power output is equal when switching between R4-C
or T4X-C control via the transcieve switch on the transmitter.

Now, the output is lower when the transcieve switch is in the T4X-C position.
This is for 80 meters.  I aligned the transmitter again and output is
same/normal when switching between receive or transmitter control via the
transcieve swithch on the T4X-C.  Again, later, the output falls when selecting
the transmitter control via the transceive swithch on the T4X-C.

I may tune up the transmitter again.  However, I am gettig tired of doing this.

Any ideas what is going on?

Chuck

[Drakelist] T4X-C. Now more output power and no RFI?

2010-01-30 Thread Chuck Pool
Hi to all
My T4X-C always  put out about 110 -120 watts, less on 20 - 10 meters.  On 40
meters there was always RFI problems with our organ.

Today, the T4X-C was putting out 150 watts on 80 meters.  All the other bands
had much more output power too.  Amp meter said 400 - 450 mills.  320 - 350
mills is normal for me.  400 - 450 amp mills seems to high?  Is it?

Now there is no RFI problem on 40 meters.

What is going on?  Any ideas?

[Drakelist] Drake C-Line, Transceive switch on T4X-C, Changing signal strenghts

2010-01-14 Thread Chuck Pool
Hi to all:

When switching between RCVR and XMTR, by using the "Transceive" switch on the
T4XC, received signal  strength remains constant (the same) on some bands while
others bands produces a drop or gain is signal strength.

I am using the calibrator as the received signal with the AGC set to fast, 50
ohm dummy load selected then antenna selected for comparison.

Some times it is the XMTR that has higher received signal strength.  Some times
the RCVR has stronger received signal strength.  And, some times both rigs have
identical received signal strength when selecting between RCVR and XMTR, via
Transceive switch on T4XC, on different bands.

i.e. 80 meters has produced no difference in received signal strength when
switching between RCVR or XMTR.

i.e. 160 meters produces 5 db stronger received signal strength when T4X-C
"Transceive" switch is set to RCVR.  The received signal strength is 5 db less
when XMTR is selected.

I have tried different types of injection cables, went through a careful
alignment of both radios (while both were connected together) and still there
is no uniformity between the bands in received signal strengths when switching
between RCVR and XMTR.

Why is this?

Any suggestions on how to obtain uniformity in received signal strengths on all
bands when switching between RCVR and XMTR via T4X-C "transceive" switch?

[Drakelist] (no subject)

2009-12-22 Thread Chuck Pool
Hi to all:
This is a T4X-C question.  I have a C-Line and I am giving the T-4XC an
alignment    (R-4C too).

(1)  80 meters challenge:  80 meters has lower output than all the other
bands.  I noticed three of the four alignment trimmer capacitors on the left
side of radio (T-4XC) are cranked tight as can be.  The trimmer/alignment
capacitor closest to front of radio seems normal.  It is not cranked tight.
With the other tree trimmers it as if one cannot reduce capacitance enough to
raise the output power.  When I finally got these three trimmers unstuck, from
being over tighten, the power output went down to effectively nothing.  I
cannot get any power out unless these three timmer capacitors are over
tightened.  This is not correct.

Any ideas what I can do to fix this?
