I thought I would pass this along to the list:

I recently bought Mike's WB8VGE (Heathkit Shop) AmpKeyer
 and used it to
 interface my L4B with my 2NT. I use a Y-cable attached
 to the VFO Key port
on the back of the 2NT. The one side goes directly to the
 HA5 VFO and the
other goes to the AmpKeyer. The AmpKeyer in turn connects
 to the L4B.

It's a great product, easy to use, well made, and costs
 about the same as a
 tank of gas.

[Drakelist] AC4R Rebuild Question

2013-02-02 Thread Eugene Balinski
All,

Just finished the AC-4 rebuild kit from the Heathkit
Shop.

I measured the voltages when I finished and obtained
655, 266 (should be 290?), and -70.Is this typical for
unloaded voltages or did I mis-wire something ?

Thanks,

[Drakelist] Drake TR-4C T/R Relay - Update

2012-12-05 Thread Eugene Balinski
All,

Update on the TR-4c relay issue. I did the pull test -
i.e. pulled the tube while the radio was hanging in
transmit. The relay immediately opened and radio went
back to receive. Seems that the relay is Ok.

Pulled the 6CG7 and placed it in the Hickok 6000 tester.
It tested as good but was low in the transconductance
test - 2100 out of 2600 on one side and 2400 out of 2600 on
the other. Is this tube considered bad for this
application?

If so, can I substitute a 6ev7 as the 6FQ7/6CG7s are
getting expensive.

Also, the copy of the TR4C manual that I have shows the
6EV7 as the vox amp/relay driver and has the associated
voltage and resistance measurements for that tube. Does
anyone have a similar chart for the 6FQ7/6CG7 tubes ?

Thanks in advance

All,

Is there a recommended part number for the TR4-C relay

Some of the TR4/4c's didn't have a top for the finals.
  In addition some
of the final tube heights won't allow the cover which I
 think is why some

Sorry no, I do not speak Russian or Chinese : - )

All kidding aside, I am not sure that there are any more
tube manufacturers left in the US with the possible
exception of Eimac (?)

There would have to be a lot of paid-in-advance orders to
get a company to do all the NRE start-up, tooling, testing,
retooling, retesting to get a prodution run. I am sure that
it is not out of the question, but be prepared to pay. One
way to help to convince someone to do it would be to have a
cross-over plan to the commercial world for hi-end Stereo
and Guitar amps. The oxygen-free golden ear types will
pay dearly for tubes...

Okay here's another way to go at the fan plan question
  I wire two 110 vac
fans in series so they run half speed. I can't hear them
at all yet they move a
 good deal of air.

The one above the finals on my TR4Cw is blowing straight
up and the one in the
front top in the middle is blowing in. I get a circular
 air flow pattern and
the entire transceiver never even approaches warm. Just
 to make sure, (and for
fun) I have a thermometer on top of the fan which sets
on top of the one on the
finals and the temperature hardly changes at all.

To keep the fans stationary I use 4 pieces of coax seal
 rolled in a ball about
half the size of a pea to serve as feet on each corner
 of the fan. It won't
stick permanently but it will keep the quite stationary.

So for me the question of blow out or in is answered by
 doing both

As for providing power I have both the AC-4 and these
series wired fans in a 3
way plug which is in turn plugged into a soft start
 circuit. Turn on the slow
start switch turns on both the AC-4 and the fans.

Try the two fan approach ... No need to modify anything
 in the transceiver.
 Cooler is better, eh?

If you opt for using on-board power, you can tap off

2011-12-01 Thread Eugene Balinski
Running a 220 VAC fans at 120VAC (just plug them in to
the wall outlet) accomplishes the same thing. Quietly
moving air out of the cabinet. I use one on my T4XB all the
time.

220V fans are usually available cheap at ham fests because
no one want them.

Use one on top of the final cage pulling the air UP and
out. Suggest a surplus 220V fan operated on 120. Quiet and
easy. A 24V DC fan on 12V works as well

It will extend your final life especially under heavy duty

I think a 43 foot vertical (with sufficient radials)
would make a decent antenna on 160 meters and an
excellent antenna on 80, 40 and 30 meters.

On 20 meters the antenna is a bit more than 5/8
 wavelength
in length and a significant portion of the radiated RF
will go nearly straight up and will not be reflected by

the ionosphere due to the high angle. This gets worse
 as
  you go up in frequency.

Could you work people on 20 and above? Sure, but it
 would
be on a secondary lobe as the primary and strongest
 lobe
of RF will be lost in space. Above 20 meters a 43
 foot
vertical is really a long wire pointed straight up.

The other issue is that the required antenna coupler
should be mounted at the base of the antenna to be
 fully
effective. Yes, an apparent match condition could be
achieved by using a coupler in the shack but that
 apparent
match only serves to make the rig happy. Considerable
 RF
is burned off as heat in the mismatched coax run to the

  antenna.

It would also be interesting to measure the losses in
 the
matching unun. If it's a ferrite or iron core those
losses could be significant because UNUN's and BALUN's
 are
not operating within their design spec if they are
operating in an environment where the impedance is not
purely resistive. RF transformers of this type are not

meant to be used in reactive circuits.

In my opinion, the antenna manufactures do a disservice
 to
the community by promoting vertical antennas that are
longer than 5/8 wavelength. Yes, you can get a decent
 SWR
if you use 150 feet of lossy coax and an in-shack
 coupler.
Yes, you can get a decent match with a 3/4 wavelength
antenna. But, having a decent match and a decent
 antenna
system can be two very different animals.

OTOH, I applaud the use of non-resonant antenna
 designs.
Being non-resonant makes for an easier job of impedance

matching on harmonically related frequencies such as we

  enjoy in our HF spectrum.

If you are primarily interested in 160 through 30
 meters
then I'd say the 43' vertical would be a good choice.
  If
you're primarily interested in 20 and above then I'd go

with a shorter vertical. In either case, I'd do my
impedance matching at the base of the antenna.

If you want all-band coverage and don't want to fool
 with
an external coupler then I'd look at an all band
 vertical
that has traps or stubs or variable length or
 *something*
that makes the antenna a reasonable electrical height
 on
  the bands of interest..

Of course, this is all opinion and worth maybe a bit
 less
than what you paid for it! ;-)

  73,
  -Doug, W7KF
   http://www.w7kf.com

I think its helpful to look at some older books on
antennas that show the effect of length on radiation
angle and the effect of the ground system on pattern. The
ground is very significant, good antennas need good
ground systems and, in general, its harder to get a good
 ground than a good antenna.
Vertical antennas have a single lobe whose vertical
angle becomes lower as the antenna length increases up to
1/2 wavelength. When it becomes longer than 1/2 wave the
antenna begins to have a higher angle lobe, as mentioned
above. While the main lobe continues to become lower in
angle the performance will be affected by the high angle
lobe. If the antenna is made longer eventually more lobes
will appear. This is illustrated in a number of books. It
_is_ possible to concentrate the radiation in a single
low-angle lobe by using an array of stacked antennas but
this becomes complicated, requires rather high structures
for the lower ham bands, and, like most directional
antennas, begins to be rather narrow band.
The problem with antennas is that good performance
requires space and the lower the frequency the greater
the space needed. Some compact antennas work pretty well
but they are always compromised in some way.
I certainly agree that getting a good impedance
 match
at the transmitter is no guarantee that any of that power
 is getting anywhere useful.

Sullivan designed and oversaw the designs of all the most
significant Drake Amateur Radio products, including the 1A,

of the 7 line.

After retiring from Drake in 1984, Sullivan ran his own

systems, an offshoot of his later projects at Drake that
involved designing satellite equipment. After that, he went
back to work full time as chief engineer for Lytton

1990.

In 1993, he and his wife Judith moved to South Carolina
where Sullivan worked for Alpha Delta, the small company
owned by his former Drake colleague and long time friend,
Don Tyrrell, W8AD.

Sullivan donated his body to science. A US Navy veteran,
he will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery after a
term with the Georgetown University Medical School. --

[Drakelist] Drake Accessories Needed

2009-05-29 Thread Eugene Balinski
Drake Listers,

I am in need of the following for the Drake TR-270
accessories. I have the radio with the options installed,
but I have misplaced the SW and Manuals. So I need:

1) Manual for TNC-270

2) SW for the TNC-270

3) Manual for the DEMOD270

4) SW for the DEMOD270

I did contact Drake in an attempt to buy new, and they
said that these parts items are no longer available from
the factory. So, copies of the SW dics are probably OK. I
would be willing to buy the manuals outright, or pay for
copying costs. Same with the SW discs.

Thanks in advance

[Drakelist] TR-270 Manual, and SW needed

2009-05-24 Thread Eugene Balinski
All,

I have a Drake TR-270 and I have somehow misplaced all of
the manuals. I need the regular operator's manuals as
well as the packet TNC manual, the APRS Softwear and

Does anyone know if Drake has NOS on any of this ?

If not, does anyone on the list have a set they would
like to part with ?

Thanks es 73,

Heil also sells their audio transformer separately (P/N
XT-1,$15.00 on his web site) so you can transform the mic
impedance as needed. However, I beleve you will still need
separate bias connecton for the for electret condenser
elements.

All,

One of the other solutions that is easy and quiet it to
use a 24 volt DC fan and run it off of your station 12V DC
supply. These fans are usually cheap and are in generally
in ample supply at local ham fests (at least here in New
England). They come in many sizes. As mentioned below,
the larger ones are better for this application.

Simply place the fan on top of the finals, use a couple
of plastic screw as off-set feet to avoid scratching the
cabinet, wire it to 12VDC, and you are done. Cool Finals.

This is the same scheme that I use. It is flexible,
 quiet, and
completely non-invasive. Also, I second the
 recommendation on the
Panasonic Panaflo line. They are clearly superior to the
 PC grade
fans coming out of China. Another tip: buy a larger fan
 and run it
slower. It will move the same amount of air as a small
 fan run at
full speed yet make much less noise. Also its reach is
 better so
the warm air is drawn in over a wider area.

All,

Back in the day when new hams and/or SWL's were looking
for a good sounding speaker, we would recommend a Radio
Shack Minimus (sp?) 7 bookshelf stereo speaker. They were
affordable as compared to the speakers from the various
radio manufacturers (especially when RS ran a sale), and
they generally sounded better.

Unfortunately, that speaker is no longer sold. However
I am sure that RS still sells a similar unit now, or you
can try to find a pair at a Hamfest.

 Hello,

On the PalStar website, the SP30 speaker is listed as
 being 6 x 6 x 6.

On the eHam.net Reviews, the most recent review, dated
 Sunday, Sept. 2nd says:

It appears that the physical specs have changed, as the
one I received, (direct from PalStar, in three days),
 measured 4.75H x 6.5W x 6.75D.

4.75H would be an almost exact height match for the
 4.6H TR-7/R-7.

Has anybody heard anything about the PalStar SP30
 dimensions changing?

Has anyone else received a 4.75H PalStar SP30 speaker?

Bud,

I have a 4-LF. I have never used mine. According to
the instruction sheet, it was designed to be used with the
B-line, but it can be used with a C-line by changing a
resistor. If you do not have a opy of the owners sheet, I
can try to find mine and get the resistor value and
location for you.

Whilst rooting around in the basement I found a new
 4LF..Has anyone used one
 of these on a R4C??
I may have bought it to use on an R4B a million years
 ago, but don't
remember if I ever used it...

There are a number of speech processors that will work such
as the Magnum-6 (Drake Version) and the Vomax. I have a
Vomax and it works well. They normally run about $25.00 -
$50.00 (sometimes less) at the flea markets.

One thing - be sure that you place a fan blowing out over
the finals. The added power can shorten tube life.

Peter,

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. There is
a Walmart not too far from here. It sounds like Testors
developed the glue to replace the old airplane glue
which had interesting side effects if the vapors were
inhaled(second hand knowledge only)

I happen to do a bit of modeling (cars and boats) and I
have a favorite 'crazy glue' . Its really good compared
to all the general usage crazy glues found everywhere.
The general types don't like plastics too much while this
one was developed specifically for plastic. Its Testors
'Super Glue', 1/5 Fluid Onces. It can be found Wal Mart
in the plastic models shelves in their toy department.
Its in a small red and white blister pack. Be careful
there are other glues offered but they will not do as
they are of the plastic solvent type and these are
useless to us. Once open make sure that the bottle is
well closed after usage and keep in an airtight jar in
the fridge. This glue is great for all kinds of repairs
to older rigs, glues metal parts too.
Go very very easy when applying...it runs like water! If
you get some on your finger tips just rub your tips
together until the glue hardens( a few seconds) do not
stop rubbing until its hardened! When using its highly
reccomended not to start scratching your nose or
 eyes!!! Hi,hi.

Dan,

Yes they are thin. 2 out of the 4 are cracked. I will
keep my eye open for knobs from Knightkit at the flea. I
have to believe that they used the knobs on more than one
model.

The knobs that failed were the small ones on the
 capacitor
range settings (located below the big knobs) and on
 the
  SWR CAL momentary switch knob.

I replaced mine with knobs from an old Knightkit tube
tester. A bit different in shape, but not as likely to
come apart. The Drake knobs fail because they are very
thin in the direction of the most force on the lever
switches. The Knight knobs are much heavier, hence a bit
 bigger.

They work great. Can't figure out how to change the
pushbutton switch on the far left, however.

[drakelist] Drake Plastic Part Deterioration

2004-12-22 Thread Eugene Balinski

Listers:

I just unpacked my MN-4C after a few years in storage.
It was stored in a plastic bag (original ?) in the
original cardboard box.

I went to use it and I noticed that the plastic button
used to set the SWR cal was cracked along the side. I
don't remember it being cracked when I put it away. Later
a similar plastic knob that controls the capacitance range
also cracked.

Has anyone on the list seen anything like this ? I know
that these rigs are getting old, but I have not seen
anything like this before. Anyone know where I can get
some replacement knobs ?

I have one question about BPL. What is the lower
frequency limit of their operation ? Does it extend into
the AM broadcast band ? If so, then the local AM
broadcasters may be one of our best allies.

All that needs to happen is for the sponsors to learn
that their ads are not being heard by the listers as
represented by the station's traffic department.

To bad these nets are so early and on a band that the
west coast cannot participate. The swap net on 75 meters
has the same issue. Not workable from the west cost.

I guess the west is out of luck.

At least the Collins net is on 20 meters and available
 for all of the US.

Permeability Tuned Oscillator. They are used instead of a
variable capacitor. The PTO generally offers superior
