I have noticed my TR7 has developed a nasty little habit of shutting down
when keyed. Power supply continues to run after shutdown.

I can reboot the radio by turning off the power switch, waiting a few
seconds and powering the radio back up. After that it seems OK.

I've pulled the cover (scary thought) and made sure all the circuit boards
were seated correctly. I also reseated the cinch connectors from the power
supply.

So far, so good. But, time will tell.

Anyone else has had the same unnerving experience?

Hi all,
How can I determine a good asking price for my R-4C receiver? Just (in the
past few months) got it back from Jeff, 8SAJ, who got it working very well.
It has all of ten meters and 160. Also has the three CW filters and an AM
filter wich is not installed.  Very hard decision about where to list it;
receivers on ebay seem to get higher prices than the swap nets and websites.

Suggestions please?

Thank you very much.

Would really like Drake users recommendations,

 low VSWR,
broad band, house and neighborhood friendly, and be
able to take output from a TX4 LB4 MN2000 set up.

Previous experience has been: not much luck with

it could have been my fault as I never had more

A Recent excellent antenna presentation at the

working Drake R-4c for sale. I hate to do it, but I am not using it and I
am getting desperate for space. It has all filters 1.5, .500 and .250 and
crystals for all bands including 160 and 10 meters. It also comes with
calibration and NB. It has been worked on by John Kriner and cosmetically in
good shape too. Manual also comes with it, of course.

I plan to put it on Ebay but would prefer a good home with a Drake I
am looking for a fair price only. Please respond off list.

The CC-1 was just a cabinet designed to hold the SC-2 and SC-6 FET VHF
receiver converters, the CPS-1 power supply and SCC-1 Calibrator for
receive functions only. The TC-2 and TC-6 were the 2 and 6 Meter
Transmit Converters. The TC-2 uses an 8643 dual pentode for ~100W
output and the TC-6 uses three 6JB6 for about 150W output.

They were all designed to work with either the 4 Line separates or the
TR-4/C. That's what the extra holes on the back of the B and C Line
units and the TR-4C are for. The receive converters had an IF at 14 MHz
for receiving and the transmit converters take a low level signal tapped
off the Driver stage at 14 Mhz. The CC-1 included all the necessary
switching.

Work quite well, but they are a cable nightmare!! :-)

Not quite Your 2 Meter antenna plugs into the SC-2, and the output
of the SC-2 goes to the ANT jack of the receiver. Then tune to 14.000
on the receiver, Preselector set for 20 M, and you are tuned to 144.000
MHz.There is a switch on the SC-2 marked 144 - 145. If you switch
it to 145, then when your receiver is set to 14.000 MHz, you will be
listening to 145.000 MHz. You can add an extra crystal to the receiver
at 26.6 MHz, which would then enable you to tune from 144 to 146 MHz in
500 kHz segments.

You can find fair copies of the manuals at

Definitely replace the mic. Look for something with an
impedance of approx 50k ohms (Hi-z). I have seen plenty
of hand mics that will do that.

From the description, the Collins mic he has already has a transformer in
it.
I wouldn't toss the Collins mic on the heap just yet, there may be a problem
in the mic circuit of the radio.

It should also be pointed out that measuring DC resistance with an ohmmeter
is not the same as measuring impedance. You are only measuring the DC
resistance of the wire. This will not provide an accurate measurement of
impedance, it will only tell you (in the case of a transformer) which side
is
high and which is low. To measure the actual impedance, you need to get a
little fancier.

The way I went about his was a half wave (single diode) and filter cap
from the 12VAC filament line. I drive a 24 volt fan drawing air out of
the final cage. Turns the fan on as I turn on the rig, shuts down when
turned off. Runs slow and quit, but really makes a difference on the
temp of the final cage. I attach the fan to the rear of the cage (so the
cabinet comes off without problems) with grommets and black nylon wire
ties. This arrangement does not seem to damage the cabinet, and does a
nice job cooling.

As far as stability, as long as you do not blow the warm air in, it should
make the rig more stable. The cabinet and associated circuits should
stay much more constant in temperature. In a good oscillator design,
which Drake has, it is typically temperature change that causes the drift.

Hi Ron, Dick

Misery likes company. But not too bad down here in central NY -

Hi Ron,

We see ice and lots of snow in the US on the news here in Europe , looks
rather dramatic!. I can tell you that winter is here too. We have
temperatures of minus 4 Celcius in nights so we start dreaming of our
national 200 km skatingtour again hi! I am allready training ;)

There is no snow however, sky is clear blue...

And you are right, switch on those Drakes to keep our hands warm!

All, in case anyone is interested, its snowing in New England. I already
have two feet of snow on the ground and the in-coming Nor'easter storm is
dropping about 12 of snow per hour, the current temperature is 6 degrees
with a 30 MPH wind.

WISH YOU WERE HERE

Stop by, I have plenty of shovels.

Don't forget the Drake Technical net today at 3PM.

By then I should be up to my eyeballs in snow. ;o)

Alan -

The AC-3, (with the exception of a very few early units,) is
functionally identical with the AC-4.

The fault that makes an AC-3 cook a set of finals is exactly the same
fault that can cause an AC-4 to do the same! This fault is a failure
of the bias portion of the power supply, which is identical in both
supplies. The bias supply is by far the most critical part of the
AC-3/4. It is used to keep the T/R relay in the standby condition, and
limits the idle current drawn by the final tubes in transmit, among
other things.

The failure mode is this. One or both of the filter capacitors in
the bias supply of the AC-3/4 dries out. The early warning, if you're
lucky, is erratic VOX operation, the VOX taking longer to drop out than
it should, or increasing idle current in the final. If you're NOT
lucky, like most of us, one of the filter caps will short, killing the
bias supply completely. Even if the transmitter is in standby, while
you have gone to the kitchen for a snack, or to a hamfest, when the bias
supply fails the T-R relay will close, putting the transmitter in
transmit. Since there is no bias, the final tubes will draw as much
current as they can until either one of the final tubes melts, shorting
the HV supply, and hopefully blowing the power supply fuse, (assuming
you or a previous owner hasn't replaced it with a piece of #000 copper
wire,) or burning up the transmitter, power supply and/or house!
Alarmist? Yeah. You wanna take the chance? Didn't think so...

At the very least, with a new or unknown, or even a supply you've had
for years, replace the filter caps on the bias supply NOW if they
haven't already been replaced within the last 10 years. Better yet,
upgrade your AC-3/4 with the AC-4R kit from Mike at The Heathkit Shop,
and forget about it for another 30 years or so. Also, check that the
fuse is either 5 or 6A Slo-Blo. Early supplies are marked 5A, but
tended to blow from the turn-on surge and so was increased to 6A.

Finally, (at last,) the answer to your question Yes, the supplies
are fully interchangeable across the 4 Line. The AC-3 doesn't have the
VOX connector to key a linear amplifier, since the AC-3 was for the TR-3
and very few people wanted to put a linear behind a transmitter that put
out 200 W. The little RCA jack pigtail coming out of the back of the PS
connector was originally wired for the speaker with the TR-3 or TR-4.
If you need an external VOX jack, the easiest way is to add another RCA
pigtail in the Cinch connector.

selling the D-104 series. Most of my ham gear is going on the block. The
old ticker is not ticking very well these days. About half of my Collins

nature I have yet to inventory. The big items are still to hit the block
as soon as this XMas thing is over. I will be busy for a couple weeks with

First of all, thanks to Garey for suggesting that I join this forum to do
this post. I have had numerous requests to make a new main tuning knob for
the B line and TR4. I currently make the spun inserts that have been
selling on Ron Bakers Great Drake website as well as E-Bay. Also, I have new
bar knobs, (knobs with the white lines,) which sell individually or in
complete sets. So Here is where I value your opinion. How many of you would
be interesting in buying a new knob, complete with the insert for about $15
to $18 each? I was told that 25 is too much. You see I would have to make
500 or even 1000 pieces at one time, so Its good to see if there is any
market out there. Please let me know if you are interested at the 15 to 18
dollar price.
This would be the exact knob from the exact mold...a great addition to our
available Drake parts. Thanks and 73's Alan..KC9YS

transceiver. I started writing this article about 6 months

The article, What's Inside The Drake TR-7 Transceiver, is intended to
help a non-technical person understand what is inside the Drake TR-7(A)
Transceiver, how it works, and discusses simple adjustment and modifications
the end-user
can perform.I start with a basic overview of the inside
of the radio and how the signals flow, and include lots of
pictures.I show each plug-in circuit board with a brief
description of its function or purpose. Towards the end of
the article I go through several simple alignment procedures,
troubleshooting tips, and discuss a few simple
radio modifications to enhance the operation.

station. What connections are to be made between? There are two RCA jacks
on the rear panel of the chasis of the TR-4 just west of the power plug.
There seems to be a mod of the R-4A: Where there once was a slide switch
(left side, below the middle lower case screw), there are now what seem to
be two 1/8 jacks.

Could anyone tell me about the mod and the connections I need to make?

Thanks lots.

Hi Peter

Well, the answer is: they are available, but are 'sought after',
particularly the R4C receiver. Very recently, a friend of mine sold an
immaculate C line station - R4C,T4XC,MS4,AC4 with a few un-installed
Sherwood mods.. Went for about the price of a used Yausu FT-1000MP or Icom
IC756 Pro. Fetched about $1300 for the entire station, but had a bid of
$950 for just the receiver and mods! (Yes, it was on eBay.)

Too rich for my blood, I guess I will have to suffer with my lowly 'B' line
Twins hi hi. They are a neat radio, came complete from the factory with an
adjustable bandpass filter, so there is nothing else to buy except the
crystal if you want to work 160 meters. I got my 'B' line twins for $300
including shipping, they are in great shape - 100 percent electrically, and
VERY nice condition cosmetically! Gives me the same warm and fuzzy feeling
as all Drakes do! You see quite a few of these, and this is not an uncommon
price. Works for me.

Either way - go for it Peter!

In terms of fan noise, my solution is to use 220v fans that will start and
run reliably on 110v. I have found certain models that fall into this
category
since not all fans will operate this way. For the ones that do, they still
move air and you can't hear them run. When I rebuild/upgrade the power
supplies
for the L4B and L7 linears, I do the same thing. It keeps the case
temperature much lower as well as the interior temperature on the
components,
especially the bleeders that are a high failure rate item.

One simple thing you can try is to just remove the pilot lamp from the
analog VFO dial -- you don't need to see it with the digi display anyway.

The heat from this lamp is a known cause of warmup drift. There is also a
blue led replacement module
(http://home.wi.rr.com/n9oo/products/tr7lamp/d7lamp.html) for both the meter
and VFO lamps, which does not generate the heat of the incandescant bulb and
also solves the where do I find blue filters problem.

I don't think the 1 Khz up/down drifting around after warmup is at all
normal.

Peter -

The specification is total drift is less than 100 Hz after warm up and
total frequency change is less than 100 Hz over the 11-16 V-dc input
supply range.

So no, yours is not typical! :-) Basically the TR-7 is about the same
stability as the 4 Line separates, and shouldn't move noticeably after a
5-10 minute warm up period. Some claim the dial lamp causes instability
by supplying heat so close to the PTO, but in my experience all it seems
to do is to speed up the warm up process.

Obviously the +10, +10R and +10T must be stable to begin with. Do NOT
adjust the +10 pot on the small power supply board unless you are
prepared to do a complete alignment.

If yours is moving +/- 1 kHz, there is a problem, most likely with the
PTO. There is a 10V Zener diode inside the PTO can that can cause
problems, along with the FET oscillator device, although the FET is
usually more of a wandering in small jumps problem.

Another problem I have seen is with the MC14016 (U1) on the Parent
board, that handles the RIT control, becoming flaky. Again, this usually
presents as dithering in small jumps rather than drift.

About all you can do is to measure the PTO with a counter and see if
that IS the source, and if it is, look at the RIT DC control voltages in
and out of U1 and see if they are stable or can be correlated with the
drift. The rest of the oscillators are either crystal controlled or
phase locked to a crystal and aside from really strange problems are
either locked and stable or wildly wandering.

Maybe some of the other repair guys on the reflector have some other
ideas!!?

The TR-7 will sometimes do this with RF in the shack. Especially on 40M.
Actually it's RF getting into the PS-7, and most often happens with open
wire feeders or other situations where RF is floating around!!

Turning the TR-7 off and back on again should clear it.

I have run into this problem several times and have found that bonding the
PS-7 to the TR-7 with a separate piece of braid pretty well solved the
problem. I am not sure why, since the negative power lead is pretty heavy,
but the added braid did the trick.

For any SR-2000 owners who might be reading this, the same bonding will
increase the power output of the rig by a noticable amount.

John Kriner still works for Drake or did a year ago.

He bought a large amount of the surplus parts that Drake was dumping about 7
years ago. Steve Morgan, K8FFO had a bunch of it and the Drake club at
Drake got a bunch of it. I have not seen Steve selling anything since John
started so John is mostly the only source of large amounts of NOS Drake
parts. As mentioned earlier he is also a Drake repair tech for himself as a
side business. These new parts were what was left in Drakes parts shelves
when they discontinued service/support for the 4 line and then the 7 line.
For a year or so Drake was selling those parts to us through their website
at about 25 cents on the dollar and then Steve, the Drake club, and John
bought what was left.

I will also echo the fact that John is a great guy to deal with and will do
you right.

Thank you.

I have no idea where he gets his parts from except for maybe parting out
rigs. ( i hope not)
but I have purchased from him, and he seams pretty good to deal with, no
problems here.

Hey, all -

I've run across a NOS (new, old stock) Drake parts source. It's one of the
stores on Ebay called The Man's Amateur Parts Supply. The owner, someone
called TR7dude, has at least 10 pages of parts listed, with photos. The
Buy It Now prices aren't all that bad, even. For those of you looking for
PCB's for a TR7 or a hard to get Drake crystal, this may be just the thing
to get some of those rigs back on the air.

You may all already know about this guy - I can hardly believe he's got such
a large supply of unused parts - Where did he get this stuff?

Also, the USPS had totally mangled both envelopes but the log books

You need to use a shorted phono plug in the PTO jack unless you are using
the receiver with a transceiver. Thern connect a cable between the two PTO
jacks..

Maybe a stupid question. have a new too me c line have the receiver
on the bench. added some filters and changed the two lamps. the meter lamp
works fine, the pto lamp won't light, till I supply a hard ground to the
lamp... then lights ok. traced the ground back to the pto/lamp jack...rca on
the back panel. I read and reread the manual, can't find anything. does the
jack need a shorting plug in order for the pto lamp to light when the r4c is
used alone... or is c-169 open? hard to tell from the lousy schematic
reprint I have. like I say the lamp works fine if I supply a good
chassis ground to the lamp.
thought I would ask before I made my self nuts.
thanks for any help on this.

Just curious..what is everyone is going to do with the New-Old Drake
logbooks we are getting from Joe?? For one, I'm planning on using mine.

Have 10 ordered. Some will be used, some will be put away with the
collection of other old logbooks and a few will end up as door prizes for
a local DX club.

Thinking Dayton and Drake.

some ways better. (Tuning is something you have to enjoy!)

I do not mean this in a disrespectful way, but anyone who has ever used a
Drake C-line long knows that it is still on a par with or better than most
rigs out there. Working some DX on in would be expected with a good
antenna.

Hi all,
I would like to start a thread regarding the various noise blankers
Drake produced over the years. I think I've had most of them. One in a
TR6, R4C and a TR7A. Never put one in my Tr4C since I never found them
usefull. The TR7a has one, and I never use it. I have to say, I never
found any of them to be of much use, if any. Most of these are/were
designed for pulse type noises, which, depending on your location and
application may or may not be needed. These blankers usually sell for a
lot of money or Epay, and seem to be coveted items to many.
Practically speaking. Are they worth it? And,...outside of mobile
operating, what noises are they effective? Someone also may wish to
discuss other noise reduction alternatives such as the ANEM which
el34guy mentioned.
Thanks to all for your anticipated responses !!
