Re: [drakelist] 4 line blue filters

2007-11-07 Thread n7ioh
John you are absolutely correct and it's not just here but on all the
groups that I belong to. Just taking the time to search the web and
the groups archives will provide a wealth of information. The other
thing I see is someone will ask a question and it has been answered.
Now it seems like everyone else wants to get some attention so the
question now gets another 10 or 20 more answers to the same
question. Sometimes a little more information MAY be needed, this I
understand. I also know that sometimes you have submitted an answer
along with a few others at the same time so there will be some
repeated answers. But to drag a simple Q A on for days is going a
little overboard. It just ends up taking up a lot of computer space
and fills up my mail box unnecessarily.

Re: [drakelist] Head Phones

2007-10-15 Thread n7ioh
Headphones are headphones, it's not rocket science. Even a cheap $10
pair should work better than using a speaker for what you want and
need to do. Probably the most important part of buying a set of
headphones is the fit and comfort. If they don't fit your head or
aren't comfortable for wearing a long time don't buy them. Some can
fit very tight and will squeeze your head way too much and others
will be loose and won't want to stay in place. The ones that fit
around the ear like a cup will probably suit your needs best because
they will cut out external noise and make it easier to hear what you
want to hear. The last thing to look at is the cord. You will want
a cord long enough to reach where you need it to but not so long it's
going to get in the way. Some cords are coiled 17 - 20 feet long
and can get in the way or pull on your head when you move. Others
are not coiled and can easily be cut to the needed length. The last
thing to look at if you are buying expensive ones is the availability
and cost of replacement pads. The pads can wear out and need
replacement so make sure what you buy you will be able to get pads
for in 5 - 10 years. Before you buy new headphones be sure you can
return them should you find out they are not right for you.

Many of the outboard audio DSP units have a place to plug in an
external speaker or headset. I have the ClearSpeech mobile speaker
and was able to mount it in my Yaesu external speaker enclosure. You
should be able to do the same with the Drake external speakers. I
wired mine so it used the external speaker and jack of the Yaesu
speaker. This way I can plug my headphones into it without any
problems.

[drakelist] for sale R-4C late serial number

2007-08-03 Thread n7ioh

n7ioh [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang
--
I am selling my Drake R-4C, it's in very good shape, late serial
number, 27887. I have added crystals 1.5-2MHZ, and the three to
complete the 10 meter band so you will have 10, 15, 20, 40, 80, and
160 meters. There are 11 more crystal spaces left for other bands.
I am missing the cover that covers the crystals on the back of the
radio, it's available from Sherwood. It has the 500Hz CW optional
filter with room for 2 more CW filters. The R-4C comes with a 2.4
kHz SSB filter and a 8.0 kHz AM filter. I don't have the original
manual, but have a new R-4C manual reprint by KB8CPW. I also have
two NOS tubes (Sylvania 6BA6) one for the RF Amp and the other for
the last IF Amp I will throw in. Yesterday I tested the radio and
found no problems. It has been on the shelf for two years now so I
thought I should test it to be sure there were no problems. There
are no Sherwood mods and to the best of my knowledge there are no
other mods to the radio. The radio looks very good about an 8 out of
a 10. The radio is in very good shape with only light normal wear. I
will take $475 and you pay the shipping. It will be doubled boxed.
If you have any questions please feel free to ask me off line at,

Have you looked at the Serial Number DB on wb4hfn.com? I suspect
you have since your unit is listed there as the last one. The TR-6
was introduced in 1968, and I suspect yours is one of the last
ones. I don't think they made many more than 5-600. They also
probably didn't make many more than 100 RV-6s. All the factory

be fun to play with next year if I do get to go to Europe for a month

Hi all, I just installed my 120-240 VAC switch in my

think all is OK but thought it wiser to ask those of
you with more experience then me if all is well. I
just finished checking the voltages as described by

wondering if my voltages are close enough or typical
of a no load voltage readings at the AC-4 plug. My
input voltage is 120VAC, the +650VDC reading is
715VDC, the +250VDC reading is 292VDC, my bias
adjusted fine and my filament voltage was 13.86VAC.

showing a 6 1/4 amp slo blo fuse for 120vac. When I go to the Drake

Hi Doug, if it were me I would opt for the 6kHz GUF1 filter. The
stock 1st IF filter is not really very good. I think it is a 4 or a 6
pole filter and very wide. By changing the 1st IF to the 6 kHz from
International Radio you will improve everything but AM. The 6kHz is a
little too narrow for those who like the wide audio associated with AM.
By narrowing the first IF filter and making it more steep there will be
less bandwidth to worry about. For the max effort you will still need
to buy a good CW filter. If you buy just the CW filter, only CW will
improve.

I've been reading the material available on various web sites and thinking about adding a
first IF, roofing, filter to my R-4C. I use the rig for rag chewing on CW
(and occasionally SSB) and also for CW contests. The new filter would only be to enhance
CW ops during contests. But, normal SSB operation must be retained.

There is the Sherwood option, the 600 Hz first IF filter. I'm not sure I'm
reading the Sherwood Engineering web site correctly but it *appears* that one
would need the filter, the filter switch kit and the custom front panel switch.
 That option totals $300.

There is also the GUF-1 from International Radio. It's 8 KHz so not quite the
same thing but no doubt a huge improvement. That option is $120.

Any thoughts or experiences?

Come on guys, this is for the discussion of Drake related stuff. I
don't see how a call sign survey is Drake related. This survey could go
on for weeks with nothing resolved other than to waist bandwidth. If
you really want to do this topic I think eHam has done it at least
once. I don't know about everybody, but I subscribe to more then 6
different ham related web sites and get enough unrelated emails already.

[drakelist] R-4C filters

2005-05-14 Thread n7ioh

I am looking at buying some filters to improve my R-4C late serial
number. From what I have read the first thing I should do is to replace
the stock 1st IF filter with the Inrad 8kc 8 pole filter. I notice that
they also offer a 6kc filter. I would assume that the 6kc filter would
not be a good choice SSB and AM use, am I wrong here? Second I am
looking at buying the Inrad 2nd IF 6kc AM filter and MAYBE their 2.1kc
SSB filter. I don't operate CW so that is not a concern and I already
have one CW filter. I would like to hear from those who have used these
filters and get some feedback.

Al -

There were at least three documented versions of the R-4B. I
haven't fully documented the differences but

1. s/n 7000+ - Bipolar PTO, 0B2 VR tube, 6HS6 Premixer and 1st
Mixer, SS HFO, BFO. PD, AM Det, AGC and AF preamp. RF Amp through
last IF Amp + Noise Blanker all tube.

2. s/n 8000+ - FET PTO. 0B2 removed.
3. s.n 10501+ - Minor AGC changes.
Aside from a slightly improved temperature stability with the FET PTO,
little or no discernible difference among all three. All used the
color-coded BFO crystal for improved stability of the transceive
alignment adjustment with the T-4XB.

Hi Mark Gilger and the group. I for one would like to try the round
table idea on 20 meters on 14.238 at 4 pm Eastern time (2000Z) on
Saturday and see how it works out. If we all sit back and do nothing,
for sure nothing is going to happen. I will have my radio set to 14.238
this Saturday at 2000Z and see how the band is. If anyone has any other
ideas lets hear them. We can always change things if we need to and who
knows it might turn out to be good for a lot of the Drake operators. We
may need to move up or down from 14.238 depending on usage so listen
around.

Seems there is some interest in reviving some type of net on 20 meters.

This doesn't even need to be a net, it could just be an agreed upon
time and freq. to meet and have a round table. If there is enough
interest, and volunteer's to be net control, then it could develop
into an official net. From all the response, it seems the old net
expired due to a lack of participation, so there might not be enough
to get this thing off the ground anyway. Is it worth a try???

Let me start off by suggesting we set the time and day to Saturday at
4 pm Eastern (2000z) at 14.238 +/- . Since the 40 meter net is on
7.238 at 2000z, that might be easy to remember. Or how about 14.338??

It's been so long since I've been on 20 meters, this freq. might not
even be available.

Anyone else have any suggestions?

Well, after getting all the feedback about changing the finals to
6146W's I have changed my mind about doing this mod for the time being.
If someday I can't get a match set of 6JB6A's I may reconsider the
change to 6146W's. Gee, I wonder if I could maybe install a single
GU-74B/4CX800A , that might just fit, hi hi. I am going to add some DC
brushless cooling fans to the T-4XC also. I am currently looking into
the pcb board for the AC-4 that Mike Bryce, WB8VGE talked about on July
21st. With most of the AC-4's now getting old it might be a good idea
to upgrade the electronics in it as a maintenance precaution.

As far as my R-4C goes, I have decided to go with Sherwood's 3rd
mixer mod and their power supply circuit board replacement. I will also
replace C100 with a .68uf tantalum capacitor and as I can I will replace
the old carbon resistors with the newer carbon-film type. I will also
be changing out the Drake's first IF filter (GUF-1) with International
Radio's 8 kHz 8 pole filter. I also want to add a 2.1 SSB filter and a
1.5 CW filter. I will also be adding 1 or 2 DC brushless cooling fans.
If I have overlooked anything important please let me know. I'm sure
glad that I have another radio I can use while I am working on the
twins. This is going to take some time and of course more money than I
really want to spend. But like that commercial says, pay me now or pay
me later. I have a D-104 that I will be using when I get the correct
plug, on order. In the mean time I am doing some work on my antennas.
I really want to thank the group for all the input, a lot of knowledge
and experience out there.

Thanks
again, Al N7IOH

[drakelist] Just bought a T-4XC

Hi all, I just bought my first T-4XC transmitter yesterday and
should have it in a week or so. It is a late serial number so I am
hoping I won't need to do to much to it. I was just wondering how much
of a problem it would be to change out the finals and install two 572B's
or maybe better yet two 4-1000A's, just kidding. I am thinking about
the swap to the 6146W's maybe down the road. I did contact Frank Kamp,
K5DKZ about his kit to convert the Drakes to the 6146W's and he said
they work great in the T-4XC. I already have the R-4C, now I just need
to locate a late serial number AC-4 power supply to go with the T-4XC.
Those AC-4's cost as much or more to ship then to buy. Oh, and then
there is my list of kits I want to buy from Sherwood Engineering and the
new filters from International Radio. Oh well, one thing at a time, I
got to save up some more money. I am looking forward to getting my
Drake station all put together and on the air. What a great hobby and
with this great Drake list I have had lots of help along the way.
Thanks guys for everything.

R8's and two R70's listed on the schematic with different values and I
can't find R35, R44, R53, R57, R118, R119, R120, and R131 listed
anywhere. I am not sure if I have R71 or not, the print on the
schematic is not clear. On the capacitor list I am missing C37, C40,
C61, C96, C97, C169, C171, C174, C186, and C194. Capacitor number C184
is listed in two places both as .005uf. I have found two C10's, one
listed as 10pf and one as 540pf. and there are two C167's listed, one
as .005uf and one as 1000uf.. If there is anyone out there that can
help me sort this out I would really appreciate it.

[drakelist] R-4B Good for AM ???

Hi, I am currently trying to decide if the R-4B would be good for AM
reception in the ham bands. I would like to use the radio with my
Johnson Viking Ranger II. I am currently leaning toward the R-4B
because of cost and all the good things I have heard and read about it.
I was told that the R-4B filters may be to narrow for really good AM?
Others have said that this is not true and that the R-4B would make a
fine receiver for AM. Anyone use this receiver for AM and are there any
mods that I should or could do to improve the AM? I like everything
about the R-4B just have concerns about using it for AM. I will also
use the radio for SSB and some light CW use so I don't want to degrade
the radio in these areas. Thanks in advance for your help and input.
