Re: [Drakelist] T-4XB R4B PSK31

2013-04-23 Thread Jim Anderson

Hi, Bill.

I used my 4B twins for PSK31 about 10 years or so ago when they were my
only HF rig. They worked, but were not really frequency stable enough
for best operation on digital modes. Even after letting them warm up
for 30 minutes or so, the T-4XB would drift a bit - not a good thing
with digital modes.

I can provide additional detail if you'd like, but I'm not sure what
questions you might have.

Yep...works fine. I have run PSK31 and 125 along with many of the other
available digi modes like JT65, Olivia, Feld-Hell, etc.

Also myself and others here have run the daylights out of our Drakes on
RTTY--they thrive on it!
I used a homebrew, fully isolated pc interface working into the phone,
mic, ptt lines on the drake. I typically would tune up per the manual
for full power, then adjust the audio/rf drive gains for the amount of
power I needed to run. Usually 25W or less out.

Don't listen to anyone regarding insufficient stability.

THe only thing I did was to add a digital freq readout to make it easier
to get exactly on frequency but that isn't really a necessity.

I now also use a Softrock Lite IF SDR adapter on my R4B...it is sweet.

Let me know if you need any other infor--glad to help.

I suspect your drift experience may be a-typical Jim. One thing that is
a bit annoying is the transceive zero vs different crystal
characteristics in Rx and Tx. They are much better when they are the
matched pair (Drake Color on crystal) blue, yellow, etc. On my A
twins, I had different colors and until I added fans to both units,
transceive was a small issue but I never found it to be a problem--even
with PSK.

Hi, Curt.

You could very well be right. I was also very new to HF operation and
might have been overly sensitive to a comment during a QSO about drift.
It could have been only a couple of Hz but I probably wouldn't have
known any better. Hi
