[drakelist] TR4 S meter

My TR4's S meter is reading off the left edge of the scale (S minus 1). When
I inject a 50 microvolt signal on 7040, I get S9 exactly. Anyone know what
the problem is? I should be seeing S1 at least on 40 at night. Yep, I said S1
- I live in a shallow valley so my HF background noise has always been low
but negative S1?

Help?

Ken -

The S-Meter is part of a bridge network that compares the plate current
of the AF output stage against the IF plate current of two other stages,
and as the tubes age the balance shifts slightly. There is an S-Meter
Zero control on the right side of the TR-4 to allow you to rebalance the
bridge and cause the meter to read S-1 with no input signal. R187, a
blue trimpot near the center of the underchassis to set the S-Meter to
60 over S9 with the RF Gain control turned full CCW. The procedure is
outlined in the manual, but that's about it.

If it's reading S9 at 50 uV input, it's about right, and really doesn't
need to be adjusted. On the other hand, if that -S1 bothers you, that's
how you fix it!
