Yep, works good for that too. Where I liked it was listening to RS15
passes low on the horizon, with headphones on and the volume cranked.
It made listening much easier. Not bad at all for a cheapo DSP.

saving a few cents worth of material. Of course that translates to lower

the engineers. With regards to the audio problem, I was able to reduce it
considerably by rerouting the volume control to just ahead of the LM380
input. The downside is it involves cutting some traces and adding jumpers.
Additionally, AM audio level is not as loud. It all comes down to what you
can live with I guess.

Certainly valid point re: how "engineering" decisions are not always the final
word! :-)

However, Drake (and most other manufacturers, including Collins) did NOT put the
AC power switch on the receiver's AF Gain control. I guess the shortage of
panel space on the transceivers forced them into it. The Drake 1-A got around
the problem by using a push-pull switch on the AF Gain control!!

I just back off the RF Gain on the TR-7 to turn it "all the way down".

RE: [drakelist] TR7 Volume

2004-01-28 Thread Ron Wagner

What I have done is use an outboard Radio-Shack DSP for my audio control.
It does two things, one allow me to turn the volume to "nothing", and also
allows a very nice way to drop out the old tuner-uppers. I often hear
net control mention the carriers, and when I turn off the DSP I hear it,
but with it on, I hear only the conversation. That is of course if the
front end and AGC are not pushed into "limiting" from the carrier.
Drawback is getting acustom to using the DSP vloume control instead of
reaching for the Drake on/off/volume control.

Just my $.02

It never bothered me all that much, actually. And since I started
working for a company that makes dispatch consoles, I've learned that
most of them have presets (harware or software, depending on the
vintage) to set a minimum volume level for the reasons I mentioned. So
now I tend to view it more as a "feature".

Another way around the problem is to use some external gizmo like an
amplified speaker, DSP unit, or the like, that has a volume control. I
had one of the RadShack DSP units on my TR7 for a long time, it also
worked well to reduce the high-frequency hiss in the audio when I was
doing 10-meter satellite work. I'll probably hook it back up when I
get the new shack finished.

Bill -

Unfortunately, it's "normal". The problem is that pesky "on-off" switch. The
pot can't get all the way to the ground end until the switch is tripped off.

Good reason to put the Power switch on just about any control except the AF Gain.

Only way to fix it that I know of is to take the switch off the control! What
were they thinking!?!?

Hi Bill,

Thats normal, mine does that too. Something about the value of the pot at max resistance doesnt silence the rig. Slightly annoying but eventually you get used to it. 73
