That's probably a good guess, Ron, although the hams at Drake should
have known that hams in the real world are likely to try just about
anything. I'm waiting for Mike to chime in on this one.

I never understood the AC fan bit. A DC fan can easily be powered from
the radio, base or mobile. An AC fan is a doorknob if running mobile.
Maybe they were just a lot cheaper at the time.

Floyd,

I use 220vac fans that will start on 110v. Quiet and works well on TR-7 and
L-7 PS.

I've got a Dayton 4C765, same form factor as the FA7, 24v 130 mA, ball
bearing, brushless, 35CFM. It still moves a fair amount of air at 12v.
Too bad mine has noisy bearings, it's a nice little fan. I figured out
how to take it apart, a little Mobil 1 in the bearings helped a bit. If
I could find some replacement bearings that are the right size, I'd use
it.

For a quiet fan, consider using a DC fan equivalent. Use a 12VDC fan if
you want full air flow. If you want air flow and a very quiet fan try
installing a 24VDC fan running at 12 VDC. The fan still provides decent
air flow and is quiet to a point of not being heard. I put the 24VDC fans
on both my TR7 and TR5 and its works great for me.

I ran my TR7 from a PS7 for the first time today and the fan that's on the
TR7 makes too much noise (it's not the Drake fan). Has anyone found a
relatively quiet fan? I suppose I could always install a 12V fan and then
slow it down as required, but maybe there's a quiet AC fan available?

I had the same issue w/a 12V fan. I put a series string of diode drops to
about 9V inline and it's now quiet, but moves adequate air...

The original Drake FA-7 was a Comair/Rotron "Sprite" model SU2C1..

It runs at 1900rpm, producing 20cfm, and a "noise rating" of 26.2dba (VERY
quiet!)
You can buy them BRAND NEW, from many electronic supply houses, such as
Digi-Keyfor about $28.00 with the AC power cord already attached...

AND, I've seen them at hamfests, "used, but working" for about $3 to $4.

12VDC fans are much more available surplus (cheap) these days thanks to computers. Some are quiet, some are not. Running a noisy one on less than 12V cuts the noise considerably.

The TR-7 doesn't need a LOT of air, just something to _EXTRACT_ warm air from
the heatsink and push it away from the radio.
