It's PCI - no AGP on this laptop. No mtrr support either, if that
makes a difference.

Cheers,

Maybe. Limited testing so far, but here's what happened:

- read your email, edited xorg.conf, restart gdm -> it works!
- reboot (no power off), start gdm -> it works!
- shutdown (power off), boot, start gdm -> lockup
- shutdown (power off), boot, start gdm -> it works!

Tried this one before; doesn't seem to make a difference.

> help at all?

I'll do some more testing with color tiling off and see how much
sucess vs. lockups I get.

Thanks,
Kevin.

Is it actually a PCI card? btw.. it shows up as one but the chip can be
either..

I've seen some problems with transmeta AGP before, but if it is PCI then
it won't be that..

Dave.

does either

Option "ColorTiling" "false"
or
Option "DynamicClocks "false"

help at all?

Lockup on x server startup with xorg 6.9 on Radeon (R100)

2006-01-12 Thread Kevin Shanahan
Hi,

Since upgrading from xorg 6.8.2 to 6.9 (Debian), I've been getting
system lockups when starting the xserver. If dri is commented out in
the module section of xorg.conf, then it works fine. The wierd thing
is that occasionally (say 1/20 attempts) the xserver will start (with
dri enabled). Once it gets that far it seems perfectly stable to use,
including 3d.

More details are here:
  http://bugs.debian.org/345729
  http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/xorg/2006-January/012206.html

Hopefully that's all the important details. Would someone here be
willing to guide me as to how to track down the cause?

Thanks,
Kevin.

Some of the log is a bit confusing. I don't know where that backtrace in the
kernel log comes from. It does not seem to involve the savage or drm directly.
But the status=... line and the engine resets indicate that the engine is locked
up. You can experiment with the DmaMode and ShadowStatus options and see if they
fix the problem. Try independently of each other:

Option "DmaMode" "None"

  and

Option "ShadowStatus" "off"

Does it work without the DRI loaded? what does your kernel log or dmesg show
about the drm?

ok a moved on to xorg-x11-7.0 and build it up like it should be, but with the
dri enabled config (look latest xorg.conf attachment) the x hangs at 99,9% cpu
usage with the nixe gray/black background and the mouse in front of it
(moveable) but i can't kill it or switch back to console (using ssh for

x works fine using vesa instead of radeon

Florian

p.s. some minor system updates were made (e.g. suspend2-2.6.15-r1 kernel and
some other little changes minor upgrades of glibc and gcc and so on, nothing
havy)

Front buffer & rotation

2006-01-12 Thread Alan Hourihane
I'm just about to commit to fairly large updates to the intel driver
that offers rotation support fully accelerated with 3D as well.

One of the problems that surfaced in this was the dri layers own mapping
of the front buffer which we ended up working around by mapping a 0
length one for now.

But the next logical step is to remove this mapping from the DRI layer
and leave it upto the drivers to map it just as if it were a back or
depth buffer.

Any objections or comments on this, as it may well break binary drivers
that depend on the DRI mapping it ??

Alan.
