As I said in comment #11, by keeping the DRM device open while the X server
resets. E.g. you could write a small program that just opens /dev/dri/card0 and
then sleeps indefinitely.

This message is (or better was, nowadays it refuses to run with unknown ids
though to my knowledge no such r300 chips exist) output by the mesa dri driver.
id 5D4F is recognized since at least mesa 6.5, so it seems your version is old.
