FYI,
I just gave these patches a shot. I have the libtxc_dxtn.so library
installed and both GL_EXT_texture_compression_s3tc and GL_S3_s3tc are showing
up in glxinfo. ut2004 and doom3 both play fine, with none of the texture
problems associated with s3tc without these patches.
Having S3TC enabled, though, does not give a big performance increase
in
either game. I consistently ended up with 2-3 extra fps in various ut2004
DM levels, and in doom3 demo1, but I'm not sure I can chalk that up to
S3TC :-)
