[Bug 12166] [mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop.

--- Comment #22 from mn...@minimum.se 2008-12-15 14:06 ---
Confirmed on 2.6.28-2-generic (the current ubuntu jaunty kernel)
on a machine with a intel G45 (Gigabyte GA-EG45M-DS2H board).
I also don't have fb compiled into kernel.

I see this bug 1-3 times per day. On around 75% of the cases
my xorg_log has the EQ spam like this:
[mi] mieqEnequeue: out-of-order valuator event; dropping.
[mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop.

I've seen it several without that stuff in xorg_log though (but still the
xserver has been stuck in the exact same backtrace), i.e it looks like this:

#0 0x7f26b8221d87 in ioctl () from /lib/libc.so.6
#1 0x7f26b6dfe8d3 in ?? () from /usr/lib/libdrm.so.2
#2 0x7f26b6dfed70 in drmWaitVBlank () from /usr/lib/libdrm.so.2
#3 0x7f26a5ccb85e in ?? () from /usr/lib/dri/i965_dri.so
#4 0x7f26a5ccbaf0 in driWaitForVBlank () from /usr/lib/dri/i965_dri.so
#5 0x7f26a5cd53d5 in intelSwapBuffers () from /usr/lib/dri/i965_dri.so
...

[Bug 11938] Switch to VESA mode hangs on HD4850

--- Comment #3 from a...@wagner.name 2008-12-13 04:51 ---
My old videocard died (8800GTS, likely the bonding-solder problem that Nvidia
has, mostly manifested in laptops so far), and I had to install the 4850 again.
Could not get VESA in Windows XP either (and hence could not install any
drivers). Will RAM the card.

So this is a) definitely not a Linux problem and b) likely a problem with this
individual card. I am therefore closing the bug.

drm: move drm vblank initialization/cleanup to driver load/unload

drm vblank initialization keeps track of the changes in driver-supplied

not tearing down the drm vblank structure.

The nobody cared message is what needs to be reported. Reporting the pain that
follows that just confuses things.

4/4 other reporters of this issue I've talked to have confirmed that the fix
that just got pulled to linus master fixes it, so hopefully it does for you
too.

--- Comment #8 from [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2008-12-10 13:19 ---
In linux-2.6.git it's this commit:

commit b60678a75d44fa9d5969f79781bd856ad5858609
Author: Keith Packard [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: Mon Dec 8 11:12:28 2008 -0800

drm/i915: Disable the GM965 MSI errata workaround.

Since applying the fix suggested by the errata (disabling MSI), we've had
issues with interrupts being stuck on despite IIR being 0 on GM965
hardware.
Most reporters of the issue have confirmed that turning MSI back on fixes
things, and given the difficulties experienced in getting reliable MSI
working
on Linux, it's believable that the errata was about software issues and not
actual hardware issues.

Ok, so what do you see if you use EXA (and out of curiosity what's the other
bug you're avoiding by using XAA)?

arjan's comment here is accurate, if the reporter isn't actually talking about
the issue in 18609 (there was no indication in the original message that that
was the case).

I am the reporter, and yes it is at least related with #18609. When under load,
the 16 irq is lost “nobody cared” etc. Then huge wakeups numbers in
powertop appear, along with huge power consumption (because of interrupts
flooding or something like that?)

[Bug 12174] New: No backlight control on Samsung x360

2008-12-07 Thread bugme-daemon
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12174

Summary: No backlight control on Samsung x360
   Product: Drivers
   Version: 2.5
 KernelVersion: 2.6.28-rc8
  Platform: All
OS/Version: Linux
  Tree: Mainline
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: P1
 Component: Video(DRI)
AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Latest working kernel version: 2.6.26
Earliest failing kernel version:
Distribution: Debian/Unstable+Experimental
Hardware Environment:Samsung x360, GMA X4500
Problem Description:

I cant control the brightness of the backlight with a
2.6.28-rc7. It worked under mysterious circumstances with a 2.6.26.
Mysterious, because i had to use /proc/acpi/video/NVID/LCD/brightness to set
it, which obviously belongs to a nvidia driver (but theres nothing from
nvidia in here...)

I have no hardware brightness control here, the keys for brightness up/down and
disable backlight just send keycodes like:
atkbd.c: Unknown key pressed (translated set 2, code 0x83 on isa0060/serio0).
atkbd.c: Use 'setkeycodes e003 keycode' to make it known.

Some output you might be interessted in:

For me, the problem turned out to be related to interrupts, bug #12121, the
$subject problem appears to have been fixed.

For this reason, I'll close this bug now and Andreas please see if bug #11947
matches your symptoms and open a new bug entry for your issue if it doesn't.

I don't know about this specifc case (not enough information) but for
the case I described it's not a regression. Going to interrupt driven
from busy waiting is an improvement not a regression :)

Well, several thousand or more interrupts really seems like a
regression :). But it seems that's the same thing as the “IRQ
spinning” (there was a thread on dri-devel about that).

It seems fixed with a patch from Matthew Garrett applied to
drm-intel/for-airlied but I don't think this has been applied to Linus
  master.

And it seems the same thing as

The last lines are repeating over and over. Keyboard no longer functional.
Mouse still working, but server not reacting to clicks.

Everything works fine under kernel 2.6.27.7. Kernel 2.6.28-rc7 shows the same
problems.

Steps to reproduce:
Start X on described system and after a few seconds to minutes above behaviour
occurs.

The summary of this bug should be GM45 hung on driWaitForVBlank in the server

Loading an fb driver along with the intel DRM driver has never been a supported
configuration. We're planning on fixing that in 2.6.29 by obsoleting fbdev.
Try removing vesafb and seeing if things work. It'll clear up those warnings
you've got, and probably be a significant boost to system performance.

If that doesn't fix it, what's in /proc/dri/i915_gem_interrupt when you're
hung?

Hi eric

now you got me. Guess, I don't understand much...

O.K. The vesafb is compiled into the kernel, if I am not mistaken. So, I need
to recompile the kernel?

Second: I always though the system needs a framebuffer device for the console
when starting up until X is started. Is this wrong? And if it needs this, how
would I remove the framebuffer and start X afterwards?

Sorry, in these fields I am quite a newbee.

Michael

Try to boot with kernel option vga=normal. Recompiling the kernel without
vesafb would help, too.
Your system does not need a framebuffer device in general, but that depends on
your needs.

O.K. I managed to recompile the kernel without framebuffer. The results are
mixed, however.

1.) No more EQ overflowing - That's very good! (Problem solved)

2.) With option vga=791 there is no screen until X starts. With vga=normal only
a 640x480 resolution is used (awful on a 1280x800 screen). No splashy support
as splashy needs a framebuffer, it seems.

3.) X hangs after a resume from suspend to ram. Screen remains black with white
mouse cursor, not reacting to any input. The computer, however, is still
accessible via ssh. No related messages in /var/log/syslog. I have saved the
Xorg log file.

4.) Kernel oopses when shutting down (seems to be the iwlagn driver).

Anyways, point 3) and 4) is most probably not related to the original bug
described. However, 2.) is something, I am not sure if this goes into the right
direction.
Will there be no splashy support from 2.6.28 on? Only 640x480 text console?

--- Comment #9 from [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2008-12-05 15:06 ---
Hi Eric

Ehhmmm, I'm afraid, I don't know, if I have any closed-source BIOS code
randomly stomping over my chip's state.

Actually, I just have installed Sidux (a SID derived distro) from its
installation DVD. I needed to upgrade the intel driver to the experimental repo
(this was a tipp from thinkwiki) to get it working with the graphics chip.

In general, all works great with 2.6.27.7, including suspend to ram. The only
problem I have is with the iwlagn driver which has a bug when lots of data is
transferred. I read that the bug is solved in 2.6,28. That's why I have tried
to install 2.6.28, which however lead to the above problem.

So, how can I find out if there is any userland code POSTing the chip after
resume? I have done a lshal|grep quirk with no output.

I can post the output of cat /proc/dri/0/i915_gem_interrupt, if that helps. I
have no idea, however, how to make a backtrace.

Sorry, that I am not of much help.

O.K. the hang after resume has nothing to do with the suspend-resume process.
It also happens when you just switch to VT1 via CTRL-ALT-F1 and back with
CTRL-ALT-F7. Same effect and same Xorg log file.

Maybe I have done something wrong when I disabled vesafb?

I will post i915_gem_interrupts, kernel config and xorg.conf.

If you're hanging on VT switch, that's probably our 2D driver's fault and
should be an easy fix. A backtrace of the server may actually help there.

(In reply to comment #9)
Please try current Linus' tree, it contains several important DRM fixes.

Still broken in 2.6.28-rc7-git1, I don't see any improvement.

I have just tried the latest Linus' tree that contains all of the recent DRM
fixes and unfortunately it hasn't fix the resume issue which is still present.

I suspect it is related to the VT switching.

[Bug 12031] DRM enabled kernel hangs hard on resume (Intel graphics)

2008-11-26 Thread bugme-daemon
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12031

--- Comment #9 from [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2008-11-26 06:20 ---
There still is a problem on Toshiba R500 with the patch from comment #6
applied.

Namely, I tested the patch with a kernel having CONFIG_DEBUG_PAGEALLOC=y and
CONFIG_NR_CPUS=128. After I've switched the settings to
CONFIG_DEBUG_PAGEALLOC=n and CONFIG_NR_CPUS=2, resume from suspend to RAM
occasionally fails (it is reproducible with the wakealarm suspend stress test
script I'm going to attach in the next comment). However, it only fails if
s2ram (the binary) is used for suspending, if 'echo mem /sys/power/state' is
used, it works 100% of the time (so far, it hasn't failed for me).

Now, the differences are that (1) with CONFIG_DEBUG_PAGEALLOC=n on x86_64 the
kernel's direct memory mapping is set up using 2M pages instead of 4K pages (I
have no idea what the impact of this may be) and (2) s2ram does an additional
VT switch right prior to suspend and right after the resume, so presumably
there still is a problem with VT switching somewhere.

Re: comment #9: VT switching still has weird behaviour indeed on fixed -rc6
(A110L), in that sometimes switching to tty1 from x.org will not be successful
and X will reappear (after screen blinking!). Switching again then works
[usually?].

Yup, just tried it again for good measure, and yes indeed, it failed again and
needed a second keypress attempt to work.

Adam, does your corruption look like Dylan's? To me that looks like a render
acceleration bug. Try adding Option ExaNoComposite true to your xorg.conf
intel driver section and see if that prevents the corruption. If that
 prevents
the corruption/hangs, this may actually be a 2D driver bug that happens to be
triggered by a new DRM (which enables GEM support).

No, ExaNoComposite option doesn't help. Btw I'm not using EXA at all, currently
I'm using XAA due different bug.

I think this problem is kernel issue but I don't know how get more debug
information. There is nothing interesting in kernel/system/Xorg logs. Let me
know if you have any hints.

--- Comment #1 from [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2008-11-24 05:15 ---
I can reproduce this on Toshiba Portege R500.

The behavior is the same as on the Jens' box:

- suspend to RAM and resume succeeds 100% of the time from the console
- resume fails 90% of the time from under X
- resume from hibernation is also broken if hibernated from under X
- suspend to RAM / resume works with 2.6.27.7

The box is all Intel, so suspend/resume ought to work on it. I suspect there's
a problem with DRM.

not sure, but is this one
http://marc.info/?l=linux-kernelm=122595443123449w=2

related here?

as the reporter is using 2.6.27.1-2-pae , may it be worth giving advice to try
non-pae kernel to see if it makes a difference ?

iirc, suse had switched default distro kernel to pae kernel, so even 4gb
systems can use cpu nx feature.

--- Comment #4 from [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2008-11-21 19:26 ---
I have an i915 mobo, specs and backtraces and other info found in the bugs I
posted on freedesktop

If I have more than 4 gigs of ram, X may display corrupted graphics and will
lock quickly.
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18082
Didn't have the issue in 2.4.2 on an older kernel.

If I play videos in mplayer w/ GL output while it's rendering subtitles, text
becomes corrupt in mplayer, and X will hardlock very quickly. If I SSH in and
kill X, I can't restart it as the card is put into a bad state.
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18402
Also didn't have the issue in 2.4.2 on an older kernel.

If UXA is off(it is by default), and I have 4 gigs of ram, _AND_ the option
in the bios to set aside memory for the gpu is set to as low as possible(32 vs
128, this is key), and I don't run a compositing 3d window manager, and I don't
watch videos with subtitles, and I run the latest git builds of mesa, anholt's
kernel patches, libdrm, with divine intervention and angels swarming to caress
my pc gently, X is stable.

Anything less and X will lock instantly after getting in.

There were parallel bugs in the kernel and X server on both G45 and GM45
hardware. You need to update your user space driver to version 2.5.1.

There's no way to make this work without getting both pieces fixed; that it
worked for you before was a happy coincidence.

[Bug 11938] Switch to VESA mode hangs on HD4850

2008-11-02 Thread bugme-daemon
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11938

--- Comment #2 from [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2008-11-02 11:21 ---
Yes, I am quite surprised at this behaviour myself. By now I would agree this
could be some obscure hardware problem that does not manifest istelf under XP.
Still, with 2.6.19 it works. Some small checking revealed that the oldest
kernel I can compile iwith Lenny s 2.6.24.x and there VESA does not work.

Anyways, I have the old card in the PC again, this is not urgent at all for me
now. Downgrde it to low and leave it here in case somebody else runs into this
problem?

2008-11-01 Thread bugme-daemon

Summary: Switch to VESA mode hangs on HD4850
   Product: Drivers
   Version: 2.5
 KernelVersion: 2.6.27.4
  Platform: All
OS/Version: Linux
  Tree: Mainline
Status: NEW
  Severity: high
  Priority: P1
 Component: Video(DRI)
AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Latest working kernel version: 2.6.19
Earliest failing kernel version: No idea
Distribution: Debian Lenny
Hardware Environment: Athlon X2 5600, Asus m2m32ws prof, 4GB, HD4580 gfx
Software Environment:
Problem Description:

I habe a new Club 3D ATI HD4850 (OC edition), that refuses to activate VESA
mode. I don't get an error message, it just hangs forever with x.org 7.2 vesa
driver. Also no boot time logo or in fact text output when compliling for
framebuffer and seting vga=anything in the mode question. Reboot with
CTRL-ALD-DEL still works, which is nice. The strange thing is that it worked
for 2 days or so and then stopped, despite no updates to the Linux installation
that I can recall. (I also run XP on this machine, if the Windows driver can
screw the card up so that even removal and re-instertion does not help, that
may be the source of the problem...).

I tried with the lates non DVD Knoppix, and it works. That is Kernel 2.6.19.
Unfortunately I cannot compile a kernel this old on Lenny (dome linking error
at the end). I downloaded all the Changelogs between 2.6.19 and 2.4.27.4 and
looked for VESA, but could not identify a change that is likely to have
caused this problem. Any advice as which kernels I should try? Any debugging
advice?

Side note: The ATI drivers do not work with 2.6.27.* either, and I rather would
not use them anyways.

Steps to reproduce: Compile kernel with VESA framebuffer support, see system
not display any text after switching to VESA mode. Not hang, as rebooting still
works, just no display. Also see hanging forever with x.org 7.2 VESA driver.

eww, ugly. How can something work for two days then magically stop?
Perhaps some mysterious hardware failure?

The best I can suggest wold be a git bisection search
(http://www.kernel.org/doc/local/git-quick.html), which will
be fairly painful.

they are against the upstream drm git tree, but should apply pretty trivially
to the kernel as well.

[Bug 11798] New: [Radeon Xpress 1100 IGP] DRI fail on recent kernel updates

2008-10-21 Thread bugme-daemon
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11798

Summary: [Radeon Xpress 1100 IGP] DRI fail on recent kernel
updates
   Product: Drivers
   Version: 2.5
 KernelVersion: 2.6.27-git9
  Platform: All
OS/Version: Linux
  Tree: Mainline
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: P1
 Component: Video(DRI)
AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I'm using the xf86-video-ati-6.9.0 driver(not fglrx ones;) and it work fine at
least in the 2.6.27-rc* kernel. Under the 2.6.27-git9 kernel, if I enable the
DRI in xorg.conf, it will give me totally black screen. Even Ctrl+Alt+F1
doesn't work. It seems that the screen was totally turned off. I will provide
dmesg and X.0.log soon.

X.0.log that works(i.e, DRI disabled)

This is the X log when DRI is disabled. Could someone tell me how to dump X log
in a totally black screen? ;) I wish the dmesg and this X log could do some
help.

You should be able to see previous X logs in /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old or
something like that.

[Bug 6626] Infrequent system freezes when using OpenGL on ATI radeon driver r100

2008-10-17 Thread bugme-daemon
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6626

--- Comment #21 from [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2008-10-17 02:37 ---
Just to let you know. I am now on 2.6.27-rc6, xserver-core 1.4.2, xorg 7.3, and
the problem is still there.

I needed to install some openGL apps (I did not use any before because of the
crashes), and it took three days until I got my freeze :-( Again, nothing in
the syslog or anywhere else.

Being more than two years old now, I guess this bug will never be found. Only
solution seems to upgrade to another hardware or just not to use any opengl
apps. Unfortunately, I am still very happy with my Thinkpad X31, otherwise. So
I guess I will go without opengl for another two to three years, until there is
a stronger reason to upgrade the hardware. Pity, I like compiz...

Thanks anyway and kind regards

Michael
