Closing as a duplicate of bug #473.  After reading the comments and looking at
all the attached log files, I strongly suspect that both bugs have the same root
cause.

more clues. This bug appears to be very hard to reproduce and happens with a 
wide variety of hardware.  
On my machine I'm using gcc 3.4 which may be the problem, and xorg ati drivers.
