  Not r100-readpixels-3.patch or hyperz related.

When I find time (tomorrow) I'll go back and see when it changed.

  I'm 17 days back (D2004.11.15.xx.xx.xx), now.

No change. Next I thought it could be TLS related (latest Mesa CVS
patch was tls-support-3.patch, Ian?). But even if it apply on older
  Mesa CVS it is NOT.

Only hint is your broken 'gloss' (quads) thing.

I've fixed that (by reverting the bogus sw tcl quad code). I doubt that
would have done anything to q3a, noone seems to use quads, and q3a
 shouldn't cause tcl fallbacks anyway...

Can someone test with older DRI/Mesa CVS (hardware), please?

Well it always worked (and works) for me. I don't have smp of course.

Doh, it was stupid q3a '/dev/dsp' problem.
Some 'new' ALSA (arts etc.) issues on my system after I've played with
Bluetooth (audio module loaded etc.).

No TLS or the like.
Ian, do you have a newer TLS patch then tls-support-3.patch?

SOLVED.
