[Dspace-devel] [DuraSpace JIRA] Reopened: (DS-615) Ability to perform maintenance on SOLR with solr.optimize

2010-10-28 Thread Peter Dietz (DuraSpace JIRA)

 [
https://jira.duraspace.org/browse/DS-615?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:all-tabpanel
 ]

Peter Dietz reopened DS-615:

Discovery adds another core to solr, search, which I don't believe gets
optimized when the statistics optimize is called. This should be available as
an argument for update-discovery-index -o, and would need to be added to
IndexClient, and SolrServiceImpl.

I recommend adding this performance fix in to 1.7, especially if instances are
going to use discovery.

Ability to perform maintenance on SOLR with solr.optimize
 -

 Key: DS-615
 URL: https://jira.duraspace.org/browse/DS-615
 Project: DSpace
  Issue Type: Improvement
  Components: Solr
 Environment: solr
Reporter: Peter Dietz
Assignee: Peter Dietz
 Fix For: 1.7.0

 Attachments: solr-optimize.patch, SolrOptimizeAndAutoCommit.patch

By adding all historical log data to a SOLR index, as well as the constant
addition of new records, it might be good for the efficient performance of a
SOLR index to periodically run solr.optimize.
Therefore I've created a patch which allows you to run solr.optimize on your
solr instance from the command line. This could allow you to add a cron task
that runs this periodic maintenance. It also spits out the amount of time
taken to run the optimize task.
Once you patch your instance. You can execute this with
 /dspace/bin/dspace stats-util --optimize
 or
 /dspace/bin/dspace stats-util -o
 Output looks like:
 SOLR Optimize -- Process Started:1277486321673
 SOLR Optimize -- Process Finished:1277486321738
SOLR Optimize -- Total time taken:65 (ms).
It would be useful to profile the amount of time taken for solr operations
add/update/query before running this optimize task, and then afterwards.

[Dspace-devel] [DuraSpace JIRA] Updated: (DS-729) update-sequences.sql script errors out, as it refers to an old, obsolete 'dctyperegistry' table

The 'update-sequences.sql' script is currently broken for both PostgreSQL and
Oracle, as it refers to the old 'dctyperegistry' table (which was removed
back in DSpace 1.4.0, I believe).
I've attached a patch which removes the references to 'dctyperegistry' table,
along with the 'dctyperegistry_seq' sequence (which is no longer used by
DSpace). I'll commit this patch to Trunk shortly for the 1.7 release.
We may want to also create a 1.6-1.7 database upgrade script to remove this
unused sequence (though admittedly it won't hurt any DSpace instances to keep
that 'dctyperegistry_seq' sequence around). But, that idea is up for debate
-- any strong opinions on this?

The current dspace-services code is overly complex to deal with the possibility

causing resource leakage.

A simplified version has been created that only uses Spring as a service
manager, and removes a lot of the now redundant code

[Dspace-devel] [DuraSpace JIRA] Updated: (DS-712) DSpace Fails to Check if a Handle is already assigned before assigning a new handle

2010-10-28 Thread Tim Donohue (DuraSpace JIRA)

 [

 ]

Tim Donohue updated DS-712:
---

  Priority: Critical (was: Blocker)
Attachment: update-sequences-postgres.patch

I've decided to take a slightly different route to resolving this issue for AIP
restores.

I've attached a patch that makes a change to the 'update-sequences.sql' script
for PostgreSQL (still working on an Oracle version -- will be attached as soon
as I complete it). This patch changes how the 'handle_seq' is updated, such
that it is now based on the *maximum handle suffix* rather than the maximum
value of 'handle_id' in the 'handle' table.

So, as an example, if your maximum handle was 123456789/6647, but the maximum
'handle_id' is just 102, then running 'update-sequences.sql' would update your
'handle_seq' to 6647 (which means the next handle created will be
123456789/6648).Previously, it would have updated the value to 102 (which,
as described above, could result in conflicts in your DB).

In the end, if the 'update-sequences.sql' script is properly updating the
'handle_seq' to avoid conflicts, then we can just recommend to *always* run
'update-sequences.sql' after a major AIP restore or replace. This will ensure
the DB never enters an unstable state.

Comments or counter-proposals welcome!

 URL: https://jira.duraspace.org/browse/DS-712
 Project: DSpace
  Issue Type: Bug
  Components: DSpace API
Affects Versions: 1.7.0
Reporter: Tim Donohue
Assignee: Tim Donohue
Priority: Critical
 Fix For: 1.7.0

 Attachments: update-sequences-postgres.patch

Not sure how this hasn't come up before, but I just noticed this in terms of
testing the new AIP Backup/Restore functionality (DS-466).
DSpace currently makes a highly flawed assumption when assigning new Handles.
It will *always* assign a Handle equal to the next available value in the
'handle_seq' (which is just the max value of 'handle_id' in the 'handle'
 table).  See the HandleManager.createHandle() method.
This becomes extremely fragile when you have content which has been migrated
or restored from another DSpace (for example, via the AIP backup/restore
feature). In those instances, it you may end up restoring/migrating content
 that looks like this:
handle_id = 44 (or whatever the next value in 'handle_seq' is)
handle = 123456789/50 (or whatever the restored handle should be)
Once the value of 'handle_id' reaches the suffix value of a restored handle,
then you will run into database conflicts will be unable to submit any new
content into DSpace. So, in the above example, as soon as 'handle_seq gets
to the value of 50, Dspace will attempt to assign a new handle of
'123456789/50' to the next object created. However, as that handle is
already in use, the new object will always fail to be created. In other
words, the DSpace system will fail to accept any new objects.
The fix would be to first ensure a handle is *not* already in use before
assigning it -- essentially looking for the next available handle (rather
than the next value of 'handle_seq) before assigning the handle. However, I
need to determine a reasonable way to locate the next available handle
(preferably something that will scale relatively well for larger installs).
Ideas / thoughts / brainstorms welcome. I've marked this as a Blocker for
DSpace 1.7.0, as it essentially makes your DSpace unusable if you were to
encounter this bug. (The only way to get around this issue if you
encountered it is to manually increase your handle_seq so that it's greater
than the largest handle suffix in your system.)

[Dspace-devel] Fwd: [Announce] Reminder: Apply to be a mentoring organization for Google Code-in by 29 October at 23:00 UTC

2010-10-28 Thread Mark Diggory
This almost slipped past my radar. Is this something the DSpace community
might have a interest in participating within.

Unlike GSoC it is not stipend driven, but award driven and it is
oriented at High school students, not college students.

The objective is to get Highschool students exposed to Open Source by
getting them to contribute to Open Source projects at various levels
(coding, documentation, graphic design, etc).

thoughts?
Mark

Hi everyone,

Starting today we are accepting applications from organizations who have
participated in a previous Google Summer of Code (you!) to get involved with
our contest for 13-18 year olds, Google Code-in [0].

If you haven’t read up about Google Code-in, you can check out our
announcement [1] to this list from a couple weeks ago or read our blog post
[2] about the contest.

If your org has decided it would like to apply to participate in the
contest, you can fill out the application [3] on Melange now. The deadline
for applications is 29 October at 23:00 UTC.

Also, if you want to look over the rules for the contest before applying to
participate they can be found on the organization application [3] at the
bottom. They will also be posted on the Google Code-in website [0] in the
next couple days in other languages.

We hope your org will consider participating.

[Dspace-devel] Welcome to the latest DSpace committer: Sands Fish

2010-10-28 Thread Stuart Lewis
Dear DSpace community member,

The DSpace committers team are delighted to announce a new member to the group:
Sands Fish from MIT.

Sands has been an active member of the DSpace community for some time,
contributing patches, helping fix bugs, and to develop new features in the
software.

Sands started programming in the early 80's when he discovered the Beginner's
BASIC book that came with his TI-99/4a. He earned a degree in Computer Science
from Assumption College and has worked on a wide range of software and
projects, from embedded code in network analysis boxes, to RPG code for AS220
systems, to managing development groups in the start-up environment. Most
recently, he has focused on web applications and services, specifically in the
context of DSpace and the semantic web. He currently works as a software
engineer for the MIT Libraries.

We are always on the lookout for new developers, contributors, and committers
within the DSpace community. Anyone who would like to get more involved is
encouraged to do so. You're also welcome to contact us at any time if you'd
like ideas of how to start contributing:

Contributions can take many forms, from writing code to editing documentation,
or testing new releases or designing new themes for our user interfaces.

Thanks,

(on behalf of the DSpace committers group)
