Kim Shepherd updated DS-156:

Attachment: file-descriptions-xmlui.patch

I've attached a patch against current trunk (revision 3756) which makes some
minor changes to General-Handler.xsl and adds a new i18n key to messages.xml.

This patch addresses the issue where files "Description" fields are not
displayed in XMLUI's simple and full item views.

The header row will include a "Description" header if at least one bitstream in
the file group has a description with length > 0. It does not matter if the
bitstream with a description is not the primary bitstream.

[Dspace-devel] [DSpace-JIRA] Created: (DS-198) File descriptions can not be removed/cleared in XMLUI

2009-04-29 Thread Kim Shepherd (JIRA)
File descriptions can not be removed/cleared in XMLUI
-

 Key: DS-198
 URL: http://jira.dspace.org/jira/browse/DS-198
 Project: DSpace 1.x
  Issue Type: Bug
  Components: XMLUI
Affects Versions: 1.5.2, 1.5.1, 1.5.0, 1.6.0
Reporter: Kim Shepherd

A bitstream's description, once added, cannot be removed via XMLUI. If the
input field is completely cleared, and "Save" is clicked, the description will
revert back to the previous value. Any edits which result in a string of at
least one character are saved correctly.
JSPUI does not suffer from this issue.

Attachment: ds118_xmlui_uploadstep.patch

In the "Review" phase of submission in XMLUI, the URL to the bitstream is built
like this:

String url = contextPath+"/retrieve/"+id+"/"+name;

Where it should be built like this:

String url = contextPath + "/bitstream/item/" +  item.getID() + "/" +name;

I've attached a patch which fixes this issue.

Good idea Vanessa -- I would also like to see IP addresses. It's not guaranteed
that logs will still exist by the time an admin gets a chance to look at this
error (depending on the rotation policy), especially now that UsageEvents can
be logged separately, so I don't think Session ID is enough.

Kim Shepherd updated DS-238:

Attachment: DS_238_xmlui-move-item-1.6.patch

Not wanting to jump the gun in case I'm doing work that's already been done,
but I figured this would be good XMLUI "exercise" for me, anyway... attached is
a patch against trunk (3981) which adds the appropriate functions and mappings
to the Administrative aspect.

I've tested this on a scratch 1.6.0 install and it's working well for me --
reviews and tests would be appreciated.

Related note/issue:

I've tested this and items are definitely moved successfully, but the "This
item appears in the following collections" list at the bottom of the XMLUI Item
Summary is being cached, and I can't seem to clear it easily.

.JSPUI displays the correct Owning Collection in Item Summary instantly,
whether or not the item was moved via XMLUI or JSPUI.

Is there something extra we need to do to clear this cache after moving an item?

Kim Shepherd updated DS-240:

Attachment: DS-240_DSpaceValidity_item.patch

This patch adds the owning collection ID and last modified date to the item's
validity key, so that item moves, maps and anything else that alters an item
without changing metadata will not result in old cached objects being served in
ArtifactBrowser, etc.

Including last modified date will ensure that most of these sorts of operations
result in the cache being updated, but in the event that an administrator
performs manual SQL updates on owning_collection (not unheard of) without
updating last_modified, the cache will still be updated.

It may be worth thinking about other values in the item table that could
potentially change as new features are added.

This behaviour was added in rev 3705 to help prevent spambots from abusing the

2009-07-01 Thread Kim Shepherd (JIRA)

 [
http://jira.dspace.org/jira/browse/DS-121?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:all-tabpanel
 ]

Kim Shepherd updated DS-121:

Attachment: DS-121_xmlui_feedback_form_multiple_hostnames.patch

A small patch is attached that builds on Tim's work in DS-86 -- this patch adds
a new dspace.cfg parameter (mail.allowed.referrers) which is a comma separated
list of valid hostnames that may refer to the feedback form.

For example, if your dspace.hostname is drc.sscc.edu but you need
drcsscc.ohiolink.edu to work with the feedback form, you would use:

mail.allowed.referrers = drcsscc.ohiolink.edu

Note that I've used "referrer" in my code, config and comments, not the common
HTTP misspelling "referer" except when necessary.

If this patch works well, I will port it to JSPUI and apply it to other email
forms used in DSpace.

Kim Shepherd commented on DS-121:
-

Changes needed to my attached patch:
- Braces should follow DSpace conventions
- Extra parentheses in conditional statements to enhance readability
- Could probably be more efficient than reading/splitting
mail.allowed.referrers each time
- Should probably exit loop as soon as a valid referrer is found

[Dspace-devel] [DSpace-JIRA] Commented: (DS-125) Date type can't be repeatable in the submission

2009-07-02 Thread Kim Shepherd (JIRA)

 ]

Kim Shepherd commented on DS-125:
-

According to the original Dublin Core RFC:

Each element is optional and repeatable. Metadata elements may
appear in any order. The ordering of multiple occurrences of the
same element (e.g., Creator) may have a significance intended by the
provider, but ordering is not guaranteed to be preserved in every
   system.

So unless there's a specific reason DSpace can't / shouldn't allow repeatable
date fields, I'll make a patch that changes org.dspace.submit.step.DescribeStep
(readDate() and doProcessing()) appropriately.

RE: Christina's comment: I'm not aware of any problems with multiple
dc.contributor.* fields since 1.4.x, but if upgrading DSpace isn't an option,
someone might be able to contribute a 1.2 patch. This should be logged as a
separate JIRA issue.

XMLUI - Browse parameters in configurable browse forms are URLEncoded in error
--

 Key: DS-246
 URL: http://jira.dspace.org/jira/browse/DS-246
 Project: DSpace 1.x
  Issue Type: Bug
  Components: XMLUI
Affects Versions: 1.5.2, 1.6.0
Environment: Tomcat 5 and Tomcat 6
Reporter: Kim Shepherd
 Fix For: 1.6.0

As per Jennifer Whalan's email to dspace-tech:

"On any of the authors, which have a comma, or I am assuming any other
non-alphabet character, if you change either one of the sort-by, order or
number of results and then click update, the page it displays has no items
showing, and it seems to be using the encoding of the comma. You can try it
here:
http://www.territorystories.nt.gov.au/browse?value=Aagaard%2C+Jane.&type=author.";

The same issue is appearing on my (1.6.0 snapshot) test instance at:
http://test.anonymous.org.nz:8180/browse?value=Abarca%2C+Nureya&type=author

My suspicion is that either some 'auto URL encoding' is taking place in Cocoon
2.2 that didn't happen in Cocoon 2.1, or we're not decoding correctly when
populating hidden form fields for configurable browse (odd, since we're
displaying a clean version at that stage..)

This issue was introduced in DS-149 -- the explicit % escaping in
AbstractDSpaceTransformer.URLDecode means request params passed with GET (to
the initial 'browse by author' page) aren't properly decoded when hidden fields
are populated with values.

[Dspace-devel] [DSpace-JIRA] Commented: (DS-161) Bulk Metadata Editing

2009-08-25 Thread Kim Shepherd (JIRA)

[
http://jira.dspace.org/jira/browse/DS-161?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=10507#action_10507
 ]

Kim Shepherd commented on DS-161:
-

There are some authorisation/permissions issues we might need to work out
here...

org.dspace.app.bulkedit.MetadataExport works well with the "restrict metadata
from display" feature recently added for 1.6, but does not check to see whether:

- The user is logged in
- The user has READ permissions on items that are to be written to the CSV
- The item is withdrawn / in archive

The issue is a subtle one, because the CLI app is generally run as an
administrator anyway, and the context menu buttons/links provided in JSPUI (and
soon to be XMLUI) aren't available to anonymous or non-admin users, but there
is nothing stopping an anonymous user POSTing a collectionID to
MetadataExportServlet (in the case of JSPUI) or visiting
[baseurl]/csv/handle/123456789/123 (in the case of XMLUI).

I think the solution is to pass context through to MetadataExport and check
authorisation as items are being written to the CSV. In the case of a user
requesting a single item they don't have permission to READ, or requesting a
collection/community they don't have permission to READ, an
AuthorizationException should be thrown. In the case of a collection/community
where some items are restricted/withdrawn/etc and some are not, the restricted
items should be skipped (and logged?) and the remaining items should be written
to the CSV.

This should make security in each UI consistent and easy when providing the
servlet/aspect... just catch exceptions and log skipped items (loathe to
display skipped items in the UI as their handles/existence probably shouldn't
even be known to the user if they've been skipped here)

Any thoughts?

-k.

[Dspace-devel] [DSpace-JIRA] Created: (DS-304) XMLUI's METS generator ignores authorization

2009-09-10 Thread Kim Shepherd (JIRA)
XMLUI's METS generator ignores authorization

 Key: DS-304
 URL: http://jira.dspace.org/jira/browse/DS-304
 Project: DSpace 1.x
  Issue Type: Bug
  Components: XMLUI
Affects Versions: 1.5.2, 1.5.1, 1.5.0
Reporter: Kim Shepherd
 Fix For: 1.6.0

(apologies if this is a duplicate, I couldn't find any related issues, though I
know the OAI interface has been under similar scrunity)

By default, XMLUI will generate and send METS metadata for a DSO if the URL
pattern matches: metadata/handle/*/*/**

Item/collection/community authorisations are not checked by DSpaceMETSGenerator
first, which means that items with no anonymous READ access, items with
[Harvard/MIT-style] embargos applied, etc. are still ultimately exposing
metadata to users and machines who know who to take advantage of this bug.

I am not sure whether this should be handled by patching DSpaceMETSGenerator or
disabling the pattern match in sitemap.xmap by default and documenting its
behaviour thoroughly, so admins can enable it once they are sure they are happy
with unrestricted metadata access.

I can't promise these URLs will remain live/relevant forever, but you can
quickly replicate this bug by viewing:

http://www.anonymous.org.nz:8180/handle/123456789/23
http://www.anonymous.org.nz:8180/metadata/handle/123456789/23/mets.xml

Any comments/suggestions?

As noted in subsequent emails, the hidden form field used by the 'secondary
navigation' form (used when the browser clicks "Go", for instance) is still
using an encoded filter value. I'm having a lot of trouble weeding it out
without stuffing up the places where that value needs to be encoded for links
(eg. the alphabet links, previous page, next page). Will submit a new patch
shortly, but it's slightly frustrating that we're having to redo so much of the
browse navigation code because of this new 'feature' of URLDecode. Aside from
anything else, it should only really be replacing '%' characters that aren't
part of encoded symbols already (ie. % followed by space, or string terminator,
or another % symbol)... correct?

Quoting from http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2396.txt (section 2.4.2):

Because the percent "%" character always has the reserved purpose of
being the escape indicator, it must be escaped as "%25" in order to
be used as data within a URI. Implementers should be careful not to
escape or unescape the same string more than once, since unescaping
an already unescaped string might lead to misinterpreting a percent
data character as another escaped character, or vice versa in the
case of escaping an already escaped string.

(end quote)

Unfortunately I think quite a few XMLUI 'tricks' handling, for instance,
browse/user parameters that are both included as hidden form inputs and
rendered in xref links do end up decoding/encoding strings more than once,
which is how we've fallen into this trap once we explicitly escape %.

[Dspace-devel] [DSJ] Updated: (DS-331) Wrong config property used in DSpaceLocaleAction.java

2009-10-29 Thread Kim Shepherd (JIRA)

 [
http://jira.dspace.org/jira/browse/DS-331?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:all-tabpanel
 ]

Kim Shepherd updated DS-331:

Attachment: DS-331_Config_property_mismatch_for_xmlui_locale_action.patch

New patch taking the opposite approach -- ie. fixing dspace.cfg's comments and
commented-out "default" from xmlui.supportedLocales to xmlui.supported.locales

It might not make sense instantly, because 'supported' is simply a word and not
a component of XMLUI, but this actually follows naming convention for all other
XMLUI dspace.cfg properties, and was intended to be the property name by the
author of DSpaceLocaleAction. I believe the comments in dspace.cfg are a typo,
not the code.

I'm more than happy to hear objections from Andreas or others, it's a close
call but I think this is the way to go for now... there's no chance of it
adversely affecting existing installations, because the
"xmlui.supportedLocales" was never being read by any locale code anyway.

Quick comment to note that xmlui.supportedLocales is now referred to as
xmlui.supported.locales in dspace.cfg and all core locale code (as of revision

JSPUI Statistics Display ignores "statistics.item.authorization.admin"
--

 Key: DS-409
 URL: http://jira.dspace.org/jira/browse/DS-409
 Project: DSpace 1.x
  Issue Type: Bug
  Components: JSPUI
Affects Versions: 1.6.0
 Environment: N/A
Reporter: Kim Shepherd
Assignee: Kim Shepherd
 Fix For: 1.6.0

DisplayStatisticsServlet in JSPUI ignores statistics.item.authorization.admin,
which means all stats reports will be public by default under JSPUI. This was
an oversight on my part.. I assumed an AuthorizeException would be thrown by
one of the org.dspace.statistics.content classes, but should have checked more
thoroughly.

Patch against rev 4632 (RC1 trunk) attached.

[Dspace-devel] [DSJ] Created: (DS-411) XMLUI itemSummaryList-DIM only matches first possible author metadata field

2009-12-07 Thread Kim Shepherd (JIRA)
XMLUI itemSummaryList-DIM only matches first possible author metadata field
---

 Key: DS-411
 URL: http://jira.dspace.org/jira/browse/DS-411
 Project: DSpace 1.x
  Issue Type: Bug
  Components: XMLUI
Reporter: Kim Shepherd
Assignee: Kim Shepherd
Priority: Minor
 Fix For: 1.6.0

itemSimmaryList-DIM template uses choose/when/otherwise logic to test for valid
author metadata fields, eg. dc.contributor.author, dc.creator, dc.contributor.*
-- because of the logic used, any match on a test will cause subsequent tests
to skip.

The attached patch replaces this logic with a series of tests nested
in a which tests for the existence of *any* of the possible fields
(dc.contributor.author, dc.creator, dc.contributor.*)

Please give feedback as to whether this is useful.. it fixes some annoying bugs
experienced when a combination of dc.contributor.author and dc.creator is used
(or if one has an empty string for a value), but I am concerned my fix could
affect repositories using dc.contributor.supervisor or dc.contributor.advisor,
if they don't wish that field to be displayed with authors.

Kim Shepherd commented on DS-411:
-

It gets trickier.. tests that were previously only looking for >0 following
siblings in each of (dc.contributor.author, dc.creator, dc.contributor.*) now
need to check all possible 'author' fields, or there's no proper delimiting
between author names when a record has, for example, a dc:creator and a
dc:contributor.

I've removed the patch and will try and rewrite it to avoid these possible
problems, without breaking name authority (which is, by default, associated
only with dc.contributor.author). Feedback on how people are using
dc.contributor.* in the real world would still be pretty helpful so we can make
sure the default behaviour doesn't negatively impact people.

At the developer meeting on 8th Dec, we decided to leave this "broken" in 1.6,
until we know how it will affect general dc.contributor usage, sort out
delimiting between authors spread over multiple metadata, etc. So we're leaving
this for a later release, and I can put up alternative templates on wiki
"recipes page"

> There is no mention of the file dspace/config/news-xmlui.xml, and yet it is
> an important point of customization.
> The file is a DRI template that appears to get merged with the page under
> constrction in the ArtifactBrowser aspect, see

> that appears on the site's home page.
> The manual ought to mention this under XMLUI customization. The file is
> pretty much self-explanatory; the head element is a title, and the paragraph
> ("p") element following it is news text, in DRI markup.
> There appears to be no way to add locale-specific versions of news-xmlui.xml,

Kim Shepherd commented on DS-418:
-

Hrm, even though I said my tests were all good earlier, I just followed
Claudia's instructions and could replicate her findings -- the menu bar was in
English (my Eperson's language setting) and the item display labels were in
German (my browser locale).
I was more testing for the "strange locale switch on logout" problem, which
didn't occur.

DS-355 is pretty much the same as http://jira.dspace.org/jira/browse/DS-294,
which did have a patch applied -- allowing an Eperson to set/change their
locale in JSPUI (and have JSPUI listen to it) -- I haven't looked through the
patch closely but I think it is probably related.

2010-01-19 Thread Kim Shepherd (JIRA)

http://jira.dspace.org/jira/browse/DS-418?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=11077#action_11077
 ]

Kim Shepherd commented on DS-418:
-

This should shed some further light:
--

From org.dspace.app.webui.jsptag.ItemTag:

label = I18nUtil.getMessage("metadata."
+ (style != null ? style + "." : "") + field,
pageContext.getRequest().getLocale());

i18nUtil has 3 getMessage methods -- one which just takes the message key and
uses default locale, one which accepts a locale as an argument, and one which
accepts context as an argument and extracts locale from there.

A lot of JSPUI tag classes and JSPs are inconsistent in how they're getting
i18n keys: the example from ItemTag above means that the browser locale is
going to take precedence, but if we changed that to

label = I18nUtil.getMessage("metadata."
+ (style != null ? style + "." : "") + field,  c);

It should (afaict) use the Eperson's locale instead.

This has only become noticeable since we applied the patch for DS-294, since
the Eperson locale's were always being ignored before that.

I think we should try and decide on a standard priority for determining locale,
and try to apply it consistently throughout JSPUI.
My 2c would be: Eperson settings, then browser locale, then DSpace default.

It seems to me that using I18Util.getMessage(String key, Context c) makes the
most sense: the HTTP request can be extracted from there anyway if the lookup
fails and the browser locale needs to be tried second.

-

Please speak up if I'm completely wrong :)

Kim Shepherd commented on DS-418:
-

Graham's response to my proposed order clears up how the UI and EPerson
settings really work:
---
[quote]

BTW, 1 + 2 are technically the same thing... the EPerson's default locale is
stored in the current session when they log in - overriding what is currently
there.

The UI selection will update the Locale in the current session - overriding
whatever is there currently (either a previous choice, or the EPerson's default
that has been inserted in the session).

So priority of choosing a message to display is:

1. Session locale setting
2. Browser default locale
3. DSpace default locale

[end quote]

I'm going to upload a very tiny patch that just alters ItemTag i18n slightly,
so we can all test and agree (or disagree) that it's the correct first step.

[Dspace-devel] [DSJ] Updated: (DS-418) i18n broken in jspui

2010-02-01 Thread Kim Shepherd (JIRA)

 [

Kim Shepherd updated DS-418:

Attachment: DS-418b.patch

Second patch uploaded: DS-418b.patch (apply in addition to the previous patch)
--

This tiny patch will cause ItemTag to use the session locale for Labels in the
item view, instead of going straight to browser settings to find the locale.

It's tested well for me so far, though I should note that:

- The page could need a refresh if your eperson profile has a locale that isn't
also your browser locale (I'd like confirmation of this under a few browsers)

- Because of Stuart's previous patch, even after logout, the site will be
displayed in the language that was set for the last logged-in eperson, rather
than switching back to browser locale. The previous patch certainly fixed the
problem of DSpace seeming to pick a random (or the last?) available locale to
use once the session was invalidated, but I wonder if we should use browser
locale after invalidating the session rather than 'saving' the old eperson
locale.

Of course, once the session is truly destroyed (the browser is closed, for
example), things revert back to browser locale until next login.

[Dspace-devel] [DSJ] Resolved: (DS-418) i18n broken in jspui

2010-02-09 Thread Kim Shepherd (JIRA)

 [
http://jira.dspace.org/jira/browse/DS-418?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:all-tabpanel
 ]

Kim Shepherd resolved DS-418.
-

Resolution: Fixed

Needed documentation: new dspace.cfg property:

 Session invalidation #

# Enable or disable session invalidation upon login or logout.
# This feature is enabled by default to help prevent session hijacking
# but may cause problems for shibboleth, etc
#
# webui.session.invalidate = true

Session invalidation is on by default in 1.6.0, and will probably insta-break
any instances using Shibboleth and JSPUI as soon as they upgrade. They will
need to explicitly add "webui.session.invalidate = false" to dspace.cfg, so
we'd better make sure we mention something in the documentation.

Hi Hilton, thanks for contributing this howto/guide.

Because JIRA is mainly intended for raising feature requests or tracking bugs
in DSpace, rather than sharing documentation, we recommend you use the DSpace
wiki - http://wiki.dspace.org - and put a link in the "HOWTO" category
(http://wiki.dspace.org/index.php/Category:HOWTO) or even create some new pages
with copies of your guides.

You can close these issues as/when you edit the wiki with your howtos, or just
let me know when they've gone up and I can close the JIRA issues for you.

Cheers,

Kim

[Dspace-devel] [DSJ] Updated: (DS-468) CLONE - Foreign characters broken in group names.

Kim Shepherd updated DS-468:

Attachment: [DS-468]_foreign_characters_broken_xmlui_group_creation.patch

I replicated the problem with group creation in XMLUI, but the licence display
issue seems to be fixed already (and wasn't covered by Flavio's patch). See:
http://www.anonymous.org.nz:8180/bitstream/id/1849/license.txt
(the licence also displays correctly during submission)

In addition, the original patch attached to this issue seems to be diff'ing
against an old copy of administrative.js -- the first change was already
present in trunk when I tried to patch (revision 4778).

Attached is the updated patch against rev 4778. Committing now.

http://www.anonymous.org.nz:8180/oai/request?verb=ListRecords&metadataPrefix=oai_dc&from=2010-01-01

oai:www.anonymous.org.nz:123456789/10812010-04-07T19:56:53Zhdl_123456789_2

John, Is there a particular verb/query this is failing on for you? Just to
check, is "harvest.includerestricted.oai" set to "true" in dspace.cfg?

Cheers,
Kim

> There are two ways of deleting: Expunging and Withdrawing. The difference is
> meant to be that the former takes it out of the system completely, while the
> latter informs harvesters about the deletion and allows reinstatiating the
> item.
> Everything works (Listing the withdrawn items, reinstantiating them, OAI-PMH
> display of various metadataformats), except for the 'deleted' information in
> the OAI-PMH header - that's just missing.

[Dspace-devel] [DSJ] Commented: (DS-524) Eperson netID is lost editing the record from the webUI

Does anybody have a patch we can test out for this issue?

> Editing an eperson record from the WebUI we lost the netid value.
> The only way to prevent this is set to true the property: ldap.enable
> The property is related to LDAP so I'm not sure if there is other
> implications to use it... anyway, we need to separate these two concerns.
> I propose to:
> 1) add a new configuration property to decide if the webUI is allowed to
> change the netid value; the authorization logic should be checked in the
> Servlet and not only on the client side as now is
> 2) always show the netid field, when appropriate as a readonly box
> We need to check also the XMLUI to get a common behaviour.
