Re: [Dspace-devel] Java7 EOL April 2015

2015-07-13 Thread Tim Donohue

Hi Bram,

I didn't see one either, so I created one.

https://jira.duraspace.org/browse/DS-2653

To be clear though, Java 7 is actually not entirely EOL (it's "end of
update"). Plus, RedHat has now stepped in to take over OpenJDK7 ongoing
support.

A few articles of note:
* Spring describes why they still support Java 7 (and 6):
https://spring.io/blog/2015/04/01/ongoing-support-for-java-7-and-even-java-6
* RedHat taking over OpenJDK7:
http://www.infoworld.com/article/2938303/java/red-hat-takes-the-reins-for-openjdk-7.html

In any case, I still think we should move to using Java 8, as it is the
latest & greatest. So, anyone is more than welcome to add more info to
the ticket above as needed (especially as you start playing with DSpace
+ Java 8)

I don't know if major testing of DSpace with Java 8 has occurred,
but it appears that the time to shift to JDK8 has already
happened. To me, it feels like JDK6 was supported for a very very
long time, and now JDK7 feels short lived in comparison. So, I was
wondering if there was any JAVA8 known issues with DSpace.
