Re: [Dspace-tech] To restrict usage of submitted items

2013-05-25 Thread SanjibKumarDeka
Hi Amandeep,

Thank you for your suggestion. But, is it possible in DSpace to restrict
the use of certain Collections to a particular group of user? or can we
make a collection password protected so that the administrator could verify
the identity of the user ?

I think in an open access environment these are some challenging issues for
library professionals.

 Hello Sanjib,

For such documents where a partial access to some documents
is the requirement the practice followed is just upload a minimal
version of the document, like, title page and contents page or if you
want to be a little more permissive the you can include something more
like synopsis etc. This is usually the practice in universities for
their thesis/desertation collections as they don't want the students
to consult submitted/approved reports but not copy and reproduce the
full text. The best example will be JNU in New Delhi, though they are
not using dspace for the purpose.

If you wish to keep a full version of the document also for
some special categories of users like faculty then create another item
with full text bitstream with different access policy.

 Hope that helps.

  Hello Sanjib,

I'm sorry, but your question is very confusing. It's unclear what
you're actually asking. It seems you're confusing items and
  bitstreams. Do you want to
  a) restrict access to items (the page with item metadata)
  b) or to bitstreams (so that dspace asks for username and password
when you try to access a bitstream)
  c) or are you talking about access restrictions fetures of the PDF
  format (disallow printing/copying)?

Re: [Dspace-tech] SMTP Authentication failed

2013-05-25 Thread Alan Orth
Yes, I've verified again that commenting out the mail.server.username
and mail.server.password in dspace.cfg and then restarting Tomcat fixes
it. For some reason reloading the context via Tomcat admin didn't work...

For now I'll have to remember to comment that line out after deployment,
or look into using authenticated SMTP.

 Helix,

Correct; if I comment out the mail.server.username and
mail.server.password in the generated / final dspace.cfg sending
email works. Also, I was mistaken before regarding `dspace
test-email`, it behaves the same way as the emails from the Forgot
Password etc; I had previously stated that these were working
 regardless, but I was wrong.

This is probably a corner case for people using un-authenticated SMTP
I guess... Ironically, I've been yelling at our ISP to enable
 authentication for years ;)

OK, here's how I understood it: if you comment out

leave them empty, it doesn't work (presumably because it sends empty
 values).

I guess the the only solution we can provide in DSpace is not to send
username and password if they're both empty.

 The relevant code is here:
 https://github.com/DSpace/DSpace/blob/dspace-3.1/dspace-api/src/main/java/org/dspace/core/Email.java#L265

It seems to me the code should behave the same (username == null)
regardless of whether mail.server.username is commented out or has an
empty value. But I would need to verify this.
