[Dspace-tech] Modifying the navigation sidebar item display in XMLUI

2015-06-25 Thread Satya
Dear members,

1. I want to change the default browse list in the navigation sidebar of
XMLUI.

Default Browse list has a link to Communities Collections page. We
want to change the link to [baseURL]/handle/2264/1 as we have only one
community. Kindly guide where to change to reflect in whole site.

2. Recently additions or browse of records (Title/Author/Date Issues) shows
the item in the following way:

Title
Authors (Publisher)
Snippet of Abstract

I want to replace the PUBLISHER in bracket to CITATION. Which are the
placse to do these customization?

[Dspace-tech] css form-control

2015-06-25 Thread alastair.duncan
Hi,

I've come across a problem when trying to add a new Bitstream format. I can
create the format ok but I can't switch the format from internal as there is no
visible checkbox to do this. It seems that the css for .form-control has the
width set to 100%. When this is removed with chrome developer tools the
checkbox appears.

Re: [Dspace-tech] Modifying the navigation sidebar item display in XMLUI

2015-06-25 Thread Murray, Gregory
Hello Satya,

I haven't looked into your question #1 below, but regarding question #2, I was
thinking of doing the same thing. I'm new to DSpace customization, but I am
getting the desired result by going into my theme's directory and editing
lib/xsl/aspect/artifactbrowser/item-list.xsl -- and in place of the xsl:if
element that starts like this:

xsl:if test=dim:field[@element='date' and @qualifier='issued'] or
dim:field[@element='publisher']

I am substituting this:

xsl:if test=dim:field[@qualifier='citation']
  xsl:text(/xsl:text
  xsl:value-of select=dim:field[@qualifier='citation']/
  xsl:text)/xsl:text
/xsl:if

I hope this helps,
Greg

[Dspace-tech] extract pdf files from an entire collection

2015-06-25 Thread Avino, Thomas W. (LARC-B702)[LITES]
I am not sure why this seems so hard to do. I have a dspace collection that
has about 3000 items. Most items have one PDF file.
All I want to do is extract all of those PDF files into a directory on my file
system so I can put them on a DVD for the customer. I only need the PDF's.
What I keep getting is a directory for each item, with the pdf, and a
Dublin_core file.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you!

[Dspace-tech] OAI harvest and last modified dates

2015-06-25 Thread Chris Gray
[Our production instance of DSpace is running 3.1.]

Where is the date that the OAI harvester presents as Last Modified
actually stored? What type of modifications does it track? Where else,
besides /oai/request output, can I view this date?

The date displayed in the ListRecord results does not seem to match any
date in the record.

For instance, an item reported as Last Modified 2015-06-15 14:34:14 was
last touched, according to the provenance, on 2006-07-28T19:03:57Z.

OAI is reporting a LastModified value from last Monday (2015-06-15) for
about 4000 records that have not been touched recently.

Re: [Dspace-tech] dspace 1.7 statistics

2015-06-25 Thread Terry Brady
Vladimir,

Before figuring out what happened in the past, I am curious to determine
why you are not seeing statistics accumulate in your repository.

Here are a couple initial questions to consider.

If you go on to the server and look at
[dspace-install]/solr/statistics/data, does it appear that data is
accumulating in the solr directory?

Do your log files contain any errors related to the statistics repository?

If you look at your server access logs, do you see any errors related to
statistics updates.

It would be good to know that you are able to successfully see some
statistics captured in your statistics repo.

If you got this far, just copy all the pdf files:

find ./export-dir/ -name '*.pdf' -print0 | xargs -0 -I {} cp -i {} ./cdrom/

Note that the -i argument in this non-interactive mode is there just to
notify you of files which had identical filenames and therefore only one of
them is in the target directory.

Re: [Dspace-tech] Vagrant or Docker

2015-06-25 Thread Tim Donohue

A few notes on this Vagrant v. Docker discussion...

Vagrant is *specifically* built for development/testing environments.
It's not recommended to use in Production. Take a look at how it's
advertised...it's Development environments made easy:
https://www.vagrantup.com/ Vagrant is also a level of abstraction
above Docker. It's about providing a repeatable virtual machine
environment, and you can do so using Puppet (which is what
vagrant-dspace uses), Chef, Ansible, or even Docker itself! That's
right, Vagrant actually has a Docker Provisioner which lets you spin
up a VM, auto-install Docker and one (or more) Docker containers.
http://docs.vagrantup.com/v2/provisioning/docker.html

Docker on the other hand is built more for Continuous Integration /
Production environments. You could use it for a development
environment, but it's more ideal for CI. That being said, you could use
it *with* Vagrant...where you actually build a Docker container for your
Production environment, but have the option of starting it via Vagrant
for development / testing work.

Here's an excellent answer to this question from the guy who wrote
Vagrant on why comparing Vagrant to Docker is a bit like apples vs.
oranges: http://stackoverflow.com/a/21314566/3750035

My personal opinion here is that Docker is worth learning/using, IF you
plan to use it in your Production environment. However, if you have no
plans to use Docker in Production, then you may find it is easier
tomimic your existing production server by just using Vagrant.

Currently, we do NOT have a centrally managed DSpace Docker container
(so anything out there is third-party built...so mileage may vary). But
we do obviously provide vagrant-dspace (which is maintained by
Committers, as several of us use it for development/testing of DSpace).

it appears to be easy to hand a ‘vagrant’ or a ‘docker’ to another

so what’s the deal ?

Re: [Dspace-tech] Vagrant or Docker

2015-06-25 Thread Alan Orth
My opinion: deploy on a dedicated machine environment (hardware or
software). Containers are cool but still, I haven't figured out how they
fit into my workflow yet. Even for simple testing, a VM is an easier
concept to grasp, rather than figuring out all the hipster devops Docker
jargon, and THEN struggling with the DSpace learning curve. I guess that
means I'd recommend Vagrant, because it's more likely to reflect what
you'll be running DSpace on in production.

On a related note, I've deployed enough DSpace instances that I automated
most of the process using a 'dspace' role in the Ansible playbooks for our
infrastructure (see: roles - dspace - tasks - main.yml):

https://github.com/ilri/rmg-ansible-public

It's not turnkey, but gets most of the monotonous setup done (package
dependencies, Tomcat templates, git clone of DSpace repo, web server setup,
TLS cipher suite configuration, etc).

 Hi Monika,

this will eventually boil down to a generic discussion of VMs vs.
containers which you can look up anywhere.

Let me just point out one important consideration - security.

With Vagrant, you get an official way of creating a VM using scripts made
by DSpace commiters, whom you already trust if you use DSpace.

With Docker, one of the advantages is being able to use the Docker Hub
Registry of images, which is just code from random people on the internet.
The question is do you want to use these, even in a development
environment? Of course, you have the option of creating the whole container
from scratch including the OS - you'll lose some of the benefits of Docker
this way, but you'll have more certainty that you're not running any
malicious code. Second security consideration is that of container
isolation in Linux, which is not particularly strong, but this matters only
if you run multiple containers per machine.

I also talked about this briefly with Hardy and he pointed out one
 benefit of Vagrant - vagrant-share.
