Hello tech users,

Using DSpace 1.5.2 XML user interface

I would like to add functionality to the simple item display so that if the
bitstream is an image, it displays in the simple item view, above the item
summary table. I know where I would put this code, but I don't know what code I
would write to make this happen. I'd prefer that it not matter what format the
image is in.

I'm hoping this is an easy answer -- feedback is appreciated. Thank you!

Hi Scott,

Yes, this is possible. I know that in DSpace 1.5, in the config file look for

webui.submit.upload.required

and set it to false. I am not yet familiar with 1.6, but I imagine the
configuration would be similar.

Hi folks

I am working on a collection which is quite abstract- it's basically a
'collection of collections'. In some cases, the record is all metadata and
doesn't specifically have a file to upload with it. Is it possible to bypass
this step, and if so, how?

Re: [Dspace-tech] authorizing access to metadata

2010-03-15 Thread Platt, Alice
Hi Jamil,

I am able to do this in DSpace 1.5.2 in the XMLUI, after the item has been
added to DSpace:

Go to item record
Click Edit This Item
Click the Authorizations button
At the Item Level (the top level), click the READ link
Select the group you wish to have access - for me it was Administrator
Click OK

Now if an anonymous user tries to click on the title in the collection, a
sign-in page appears instead of the item record. The title, author, date and
publisher are still available from the browsing list, however.

[Dspace-tech] Item level statistics for XMLUI

Hi everyone!

I'm looking to implement some kind of item level stats for Dspace 1.5.2, using
XMLUI, Ubuntu 8.04.3 LTS.

My first shot was to try Minho RepositoriUM Statistics, but as far as i know
it only works for JSPUI, using the "info" facility.

Then I thought about University of Rochester's Dspace statistics package,
Nathan Sarr gently told me that it's no longer supported, so there is little
chance for it to work with Dspace 1.5.2.

I'm already using Google Analytics, but you already know it's not enough.

Any advice on this topic will be really appreciated.
Thanks.

Re: [Dspace-tech] Edit License in Dspace

2009-12-02 Thread Platt, Alice
Hello Baseer,

I am only familiar with 1.5 XMLUI, so I am not sure if it works the same way in
the JSP interface. But this is how it works in the XMLUI:

When you change the license, it is not retroactive; this means, it only changes
for the items you add after you change the license.

As far as I know, you can not change all the old licenses at once; you must do
it one at a time.

To change the license on older items, you must:

- Go to the item that has a license you want to change
- Click "Edit This Item"
- Click the Item Bitstreams tab
- Upload a New Bitstream
- Then you add the new license txt file

You're not quite done:
- After you've uploaded the new txt file, click on it
- Where it says Primary Bitstream, select Yes

Then you can delete the old license bitstream from that item.

It has been mentioned before to be careful when changing license agreements,
since someone previously did agree to that old license.

Alice,

It looks like it is an odd HTML problem and a definite bug in the DSpace
XMLUI. It looks like the problem starts with your "Abstract" field, as
it doesn't have any hint/help text specified. So, under the "Abstract"
field you have an empty tag:

I think this tag is confusing IE7 (for whatever reason). If I place
any text in there (e.g. test me), then
the problem is fixed until the next empty "hint" text occurs. I've
also verified this same problem happens in out-of-the-box DSpace 1.5.2,
if I remove any of the default text in the input_forms.xml

I'm going to log a bug in DSpace Jira (our issue tracking system).
It's likely there's a relatively easy fix, and we can let you know once
we're able to resolve it. The quick fix (on your end) would be to make
sure that each field has text specified in your input_forms.xml.
Obviously, that's not ideal, so we'll look into a real fix to the issue.

Thanks for reporting this!

Re: [Dspace-tech] incredibly shrinking text

2009-11-12 Thread Platt, Alice
Thanks for your response, Tim:

It seems to have started after we added several input fields to the submission
form. I'm wondering if maybe adding several input fields caused a glitch with
the way the input-forms.xml file is processed.

I saved the source of the two submission pages that have the problem and ran it
through the W3C Markup Validation Service, which assured me that the XHTML code
and the CSS code is valid.

I did take a close look at the source as you suggested (I do usually use
Firefox; this problem with IE was discovered on someone else's computer), and
unfortunately I don't see anything out of the ordinary.

I'm using IE Version 7.0.

Quite perplexing!

Alice,

What version of Internet Explorer are you using? I've just tried IE8 and
IE7 and both of them seem to work fine with the out-of-the-box DSpace
1.5.2 XMLUI submission process.

It sounds like this could be something in what you've changed (to add
the new metadata elements). It sounds like a CSS / HTML issue here. It's
likely you could have invalid HTML that is confusing Internet Explorer
(look especially for odd HTML tags that have nothing in them, like
or similar). If you have odd empty HTML tags, sometimes just
adding a simple space ( ) in the tag will help IE figure things out
properly.

If you use Firefox at all, you also may want to install FireBug
(http://getfirebug.com/) plugin. This plugin will let you right click on
an area of the page and choose "inspect element" to see the HTML + CSS
source that is being applied by the web browser. You may want to inspect
the source right around the area where you see the "incredibly shrinking
text" start to happen in IE.

Good luck. Let us know if you need more help. If you figure it out, it'd
also be good to let us know what the resolution was, so that you can
help others who may come across the same problem in the future.

- Tim

[Dspace-tech] incredibly shrinking text

2009-11-12 Thread Platt, Alice
I haven't gotten any feedback to the following question... hoping for some
ideas.

Currently, in Internet Explorer only, the submission form text gets smaller and
smaller as I scroll down the page. The sidebar is also very, very, very tiny.
The text gets so small that it is not readable. I have never seen this before
and can't imagine what is causing this to happen.

I can send a screen shot to anyone who is interested in seeing what I am
seeing. The only thing we've really changed is that we've added so many new
metadata elements to the form, but I don't understand how that could be causing
this problem.

Again, this is only when I use Internet Explorer (I've tried it on different
computers, of course). Firefox, Safari and Google Chrome work just fine. Does
anyone have any ideas on what is causing this? Thanks!

Without rewriting the dspace source, there is a way to make any field

a metadata value.

In the IR I am managing I created a metadata tag to describe the item
type, so that we could filter out thesis having full -text or
abstract-only or TOC-only. A little changes to the config file is needed
if you wish your advanced search options to include your custom metadata
tags.

[Dspace-tech] possible to search for records with/without bitstream?

2009-10-27 Thread Platt, Alice
Hello all,

DSpace 1.5.2:

Does anyone know if it is possible to configure the Advanced Search so that the
records displayed can be narrowed down by the presence, or lack of, a
bitstream? We may have several records without bitstreams, and it seems it
would be very helpful for people to search "full text," if you will.

[Dspace-tech] incredibly shrinking text

2009-10-21 Thread Platt, Alice
A while back we made significant customizations to the metadata submission
form, or input form file, "input-forms.xml". We added a lot of metadata fields,
so the forms are much longer than they once were.

Since then, and only when using Internet Explorer, the text within the form
mysteriously gets smaller and smaller as I scroll down the page. The sidebar,
which normally displays "communities" "administration", etc., is also very,
very, very tiny - it is in fact unreadable. The text at the bottom of the form
is also unreadable.

The first page, where it asks if the item has Multiple Titles or has been
Published before, looks fine.
The next two submission pages have the problem.
The Upload File page is fine.

Thanks!

Yes! Thank you, that worked, and I was able to make my subject links clickable

In DSpace 1.5, the author browse links have changed to this format:

/browse?value=Artschwager%2C+Richard&type=author

any difference with this modification?

 [a]
[xsl:attribute name="href"]
[xsl:value-of
select="concat($context-path,'/browse?value=')"/]
[xsl:copy-of select="."/]&type=author
[/xsl:attribute]
[xsl:value-of select="text()"/]
 [/a]

[Dspace-tech] change title to author in workflow tasks?

2009-10-07 Thread Platt, Alice
During our testing of DSpace 1.5.1 XMLUI, we've noticed that in Submissions,
under "Tasks you own" "Tasks in the pool" etc., the items are identified by
Title. This is really a major problem for us; we can't expect our content
specialist or professors to recognize a student's work in the pool by Title. It
would make much more sense and save the editors a lot of time to have the
Author displayed in the column list.

I realize this is probably something that needs to be changed in the Java code.
Has anyone done this who would be willing to share the code?

With sincere thanks,

Re: [Dspace-tech] two theme modification questions: linking author

2009-10-07 Thread Platt, Alice
Hi Keith,

Thank you, yes, that does exactly match what I am looking for. Unfortunately,
now my link doesn't go anywhere!

I used the code in the wiki for the link, shown below (I've changed the html
brackets to different brackets for email transmission), but apparently the
value-of select has also changed in 1.5. Methinks we need to update the wiki!
;-)

[a]
[xsl:attribute name="href"]
[xsl:value-of
select="concat($context-path,'/browse-author-items?author=')"/]
[xsl:copy-of select="."/]
[/xsl:attribute]
[xsl:value-of select="text()"/]
[/a]

Does anyone know what this link should be for 1.5? I compared the HTML code of
the link I just created to the link that displays in the Author Browse
(assuming they would be the same) and they are definitely different, but now
I'm having trouble figuring out where the code comes from that created the
browse link. Grrr.

I had also planned to link the Subject... I imagine the links would be very
similar.

Hi Alice. In the 1.5 version of Manakin, there is a file called
DIM-Handler.xsl. The metadata in the simple item view is formatted in
the template that starts with this line:

Does this match what you're looking for?

[Dspace-tech] two theme modification questions

2009-10-06 Thread Platt, Alice
Hello all,

A couple of questions regarding theme modifications. I am currently working off
of the DSpace Live CD. My understanding that the Live CD is using 1.5.0.
Eventually these changes will be implemented in DSpace 1.5.2 XMLUI.

I have created a new theme and am making certain modifications to it. I am left
with two that I am stumped on and would appreciate anyone's assistance.

I'd like to make the Author and Subject clickable links in the simple item
view. The instructions on the Manakin HOWTO page of the DSpace wiki says that
"The XSLT that creates author listings is in
themes/dri2xhtml/DS-METS-1.0-DIM.xsl". However, I do not have a file called
DS-METS-1.0-DIM.xsl. Has this code moved to a different xsl file, and where
would I find it? I did try looking in "structural.xsl," but it wasn't there.

My other question: I'd also like to add some text below the "go" button on the
Advanced Search page. I've added what I want to say to messages.xml, but now
I'm having trouble finding the code for where the Advanced Search page comes
from. I figured if I searched in the structural.xsl file for some of the other
messages.xml text that is present on the Advanced Search page, I would find it,
but... no luck.

I appreciate your assistance!

[Dspace-tech] collection-specific license text

2009-09-29 Thread Platt, Alice
Using XMLUI, 1.5.1:

I see that I can specify different license text when I create a new collection
by entering it into the License field. However, I don't really want all that
license text to display on the Collection page. I want the license to just be
accessible from the item's License Text link, just like the default license
text.

Can someone point me in the right direction to achieve this?

[Dspace-tech] CSS code question

2009-09-28 Thread Platt, Alice
Hello,

I am making simple changes to the style tier, using Firebug to identify CSS
code that needs to be changed. This has basically been successful except for
one little spot. When I am in the administrative area editing an Item, there
are four tabs along the top of the body - Item Status, Item Bistreams, Item
Metadata, and View Item. These tabs have a horizontal rule under them, and I
found that rule in the CSS, but there's also some kind of box around each tab,
with a border and a background color. I can't seem to find the CSS code that
changes this border and background color.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks.

I'm working off the DSpace Live CD, XMLUI, version 5.

[Dspace-tech] "no network devices" on DSpace Live CD

2009-07-20 Thread Platt, Alice
Hello,

I'd like to start working with the DSpace 1.5 Live CD (received at the NITLE
Camp at Smith College last month), but I've hit a snag - I can't seem to get an
internet connection through our wireless or our wired networks. I see the error
"No network devices have been found." I tried to make a connection but I can
only see an option for a Point-to-Point connection. Is it possible to set this
up for a wireless or network connection? We did a hardware test and it does
recognize my computer's network card.

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

[Dspace-tech] advanced search questions

2009-07-15 Thread Platt, Alice
Question about DSpace configuration code, version 1.5.1:

In the DSpace config file, there's a section called "Fields to Index for
Search". Let's say the code for one of the search indexes is
"author:dc.contributor.editor". How does the word "author:" relate to the rest
of DSpace code? I'm not sure what its purpose is, or what its naming
conventions should be.

[Dspace-tech] "There are no files associated with this item" - change that text?

2009-07-02 Thread Platt, Alice
Hello,

We are planning to add a lot of item records without associated bitstreams, and
it would be nice to change the text in the bitstream area of the item record
from "There are no files associated with this item." to something like, "This
resource is available in the Shapiro Library at Southern New Hampshire

for where to make this change?

[Dspace-tech] separate paragraphs in text areas?

2009-06-09 Thread Platt, Alice
Hello,

We are installing DSpace 1.5.1 with the XML (Manakin) interface. Last week at
the DSpace workshop in Massachusetts, someone pointed out that when submitting
an item, it is not possible to have multiple paragraphs in the textarea fields,
such as the Abstract. This will definitely be an annoying problem for us and
for many others.

Has anyone figured out a way to get around this problem? I did try using an
html paragraph tag, but the tag was just displayed with the rest of the text.

Thanks!
