Re: [Dspace-tech] Batch Import DSpace 5.2

2015-07-28 Thread Layale Bassil
Hello Euler,

Thank you for the response. I checked the link and accordingly I exported a
collection and was trying to import it back to see how the batch import works
(under /admin/batchimport) and selected the zip file and clicked on Upload
SingleArchiveFormat Zip button and am getting redirected to a blank page with
no action taken.

I need to know if this behavior is common or we have something wrong with our
installation. I need to do batch import into Dspace 5.2, how can I accomplish
this?

Thanks.

Hi Layale,

The zip file should contain the structure when you export a collection. See
this link: Importing and Exporting Items via Simple Archive Format
https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSDOC5x/Importing+and+Exporting+Items+via+Simple+Archive+Format

.

Hope this help.

Re: [Dspace-tech] batch import error You need to provide the owning collection

2015-05-05 Thread Chris Gray
In a simple archive format, the handle is the handle for the item not
for the collection. There is no reference to the collection in the
simple archive format as far as I know.

My understanding is that you must select the destination collection when
importing.

 So, if we wanted to ingest bags via SWORD (which sounds like a good idea
 to me), I believe there's still one piece missing:

 * a SWORDIngester class which calls the replicate code to ingest a bag
 received via SWORD into DSpace. (This would be similar to how there's a
 SWORDMETSIngester which forwards METS packages on to the DSpace METS
 PackageIngester)

 - Tim

I was excited at the idea that perhaps the SwordBagitIngester could forward
packages onto the Replicate Suite, but I think maybe it's not quite that
simple? The Replicate Suite seems to be specifically designed for
backup/restore processes.

The main issue that I am concerned about is that BagitRestoreFromAIP seems
to check some sort of deletion catalog before performing the restore? Do you
happen to know off hand whether the Replicate Suite could digest exported
bagit packages from a /different/ repository?

Thanks for any pointers that you may be able to offer :-).

The batch import tool is suitable to import these papers but it needs
metadata in DSpace format.
Is there any way of creating DSpace Dublin-core format if we have some basic
information about title, author, report number?

Regards
Kirti

[Dspace-tech] batch import

2012-11-09 Thread Alain Tschanz
Hello,
I need to upload thousands of records, but not all items belong to the same
collection id. I created a csv spreadsheet with all the metadata info in it and
added the collection id for each item. I have a program to generate packages to
upload based on the info in the spreadsheet. Is there a way to import all items
at once into the proper collection id or do I have to create groups of items
with the same collection id and then import them separately?

I run DSpace 1.8.2 with a modified Reference theme (xmlui).

Thank you.

Alain Tschanz

Hi Alain,
do you also need to upload bitstreams? If not, just use Batch metadata
editor from the command line to import the CV at once.
If you also need to upload bitstreams, you could then export thus imported
items as SIP packages, add the bitstream and run ItemUpdater.

Are you certain? My experience of Windows editors is that they prefer
being helpful to being obedient, and will stick on an extension you
didn't specify because it's assumed that you want one. Explorer then
compounds this by hiding the extensions it knows about (unless, as I
always do, you configure it to never do that).

Get into that directory using a cmd.exe window and use the 'dir'
command, which never tries to be clever. Does that file have the name
you thought it did?

Hi Ritika,

The contents file can't have an extension; it has to be named just contents.

Everything else looks good, though I'd check to make sure a mapfile was not
created. If so, delete it before trying the import again.

Re: [Dspace-tech] Batch Import is not working

2012-01-20 Thread Davis, Barry
My understanding is that the Dspace importer looks for a directory
structure when importing items. When we do bulk imports, we point a a
directory that contains another directory for each of our items, that then
contains our xml, contents, and bitstreams. So, we point the import
command to a directory, say /tmp/dsploader, and in that directory we have
other directories, typicallyed number 1 to whatever number of items we
have. in folder 1 we have a dublin_core.xml, contents, and the actual
bitstreams, and so on and so forth.

Maybe if you step up one directory level in your command prompt it would
solve your problem?  Like:

./dspace import -a -e dsp...@meclibrary.com -c 123456789/18 -s
/media/Maheshwara/import/ -m mapfilest

The line of code where it blows up seems to be accessing the directory where
the data is at.

I would check that you are importing from the right directory, and that the

Re: [Dspace-tech] Batch import problems

2011-11-04 Thread Thornton, Susan M. (LARC-B702)[LITES]
If you execute the Import script and write the output to a file (using
filename.out), you should see what the problem is in here. Also check the .map
file and see if there is a message in there indicating what the problem is.
I've never had the import blow up where there wasn't a message in one of these
files indicating what the problem was.

Hope this helps,

Re: [Dspace-tech] batch import of Bagit-formated collections and/or conversion script for Bagit to SAF

2011-07-28 Thread Tim Donohue
Though, to be clear -- the replicate code is *not* hooked up to DSpace's
SWORD ingestion process yet.

PackageIngester)

 therefore need to write a bag ingester than knows how to unpack and ingest
 the contents of the bag. This would make an excellent addition to DSpace :)

[Dspace-tech] Batch import metadata help needed

2010-05-24 Thread Renata Dyer
Dear dspace-tech list;
I am new to the dspace world and need some basic help.

This is what I am trying to do:
I have exported over a 1000 records from the library management system
into a csv format and would like to batch import these records (no
attachments here) into the dspace.

I found some documents on the wiki but I seem to miss the initial starting
point.

I have created the collection and the fields that will match the fields in
my csv file.
Then after creating a collection I go to the Import metadata and select
the file to load it - but I got the error message:
An unknown error has occurred

I just have a feeling that I am missing the crucial step; do I need to
have a separate plug-in installed?

We are on Dspace 1.6.0.

Sorry for asking a stupid question but I thought this would be a very
time-consuming investigation for me while being an easy answer for an
expert.

If anyone has done something similar I would appreciate if you could share
your procedures.

Many thanks,

2010-05-24 Thread Allen Lam

Hi Renata,

It seems you are missing one important step before batch import: to
rewrite your csv file into xml files in dublin core format.

There are existing tools to generate the needed xml files from some sources.
These tools sometimes are called converters, transformers, crosswalks,
or csv2dc, etc. Do some searching.

As the tools are pre-built, they may or may not fully meet your requirement.

If in-house programmers are available writing a custom-made one is not
too difficult, and gives perfect results.

Also remember that the xml files and other associated files needs to be
put in suitable folders in a rigidly defined structure. Consult the
dspace manual about this requirement.

Re: [Dspace-tech] Batch import metadata help needed

2010-05-24 Thread Hayden Young

Hi Renata

I agree with Allen; you will be able to find some existing tools that
can be found in various locations on the web but you will need to mix it
with some custom development. We have carried out a few conversions and
have found that there is never an out-of-the-box solution due to the
idiosyncrasies of the source data.

We converted about 25,000 records for the Royal Naval Museum who had
data in CSV. The procedures we took;

- Converted the CSV to Excel XML,
- Developed a crosswalk for Excel XML to Dublin Core. The crosswalk
script built the Dublin Core metadata and assets into a package which
DSpace could easily ingest,
- Used the DSpace command line import tool to import the DC assets into
DSpace.

We open sourced the crosswalk scripts which you are welcome to use; it
is available at http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/dcmetatoolkit. The
scripts are rudimentary but they will hopefully assist you.

Cheers

Hayden

 in  the LUCENE index. This is done, when you run the

[Dspace-tech] Batch Import

2009-05-18 Thread Rodrigo Kiguti

I am importing itens in DSpace using Batch Import, using: dsrun
org.dspace.app.itemimport.ItemImport -a ...

It is imported, I find it with the handle, but I can't find it in the search.

But when I run dsrun org.dspace.search.DSIndexer I find it in the search.

What's wrong?

Regards,
Kiguti

[Dspace-tech] batch import, nothing happening

2009-04-20 Thread Sarah Ryder

Hi folks

I'm running 1.5.1 on a Debian server and I'm attempting to run a batch
import (just w/ 1 item and 4 files at the moment to test). I'm running
the following command:
dsrun org.dspace.app.itemimport.ItemImport --add
--eperson=sj...@hampshire.edu --collection=1 --source=/tmp/dva0001
--mapfile=/tmp/dva0001_map.txt

and nothing seems to be happening at all. There are no errors.. as the
script runs the output looks normal and a map file is generated but the
map file
is empty and there is no entry in the item database.

The /tmp/dva0001 directory contains a contents file which lists all 4 of
the jpg files that are also in the directory (1 per line) and a
dublin_core.xml
file which is in the standard format of:
dublin_core
 dcvalue element=title qualifier=noneA Tale of Two
Cities/dcvalue
 dcvalue element=date
qualifier=issued1990/dcvalue/dublin_core
/dublin_core

I'm thinking the problem may be due to some customizations in the
metadata registry. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks

Hi Sarah,

you got the source file wrong. The source file must contain one
directory per item to be imported. Try

mkdir /tmp/testimport/item01
cp /tmp/dva0001/* /tmp/testimport/item01

then run
dsrun org.dspace.app.itemimport.ItemImport
-a -e sj...@hampshire.edu -collection=1 -s /tmp/testimport -mapfile
/tmp/testimport_map.txt

Hope that helps

One, try running it with the test flag ( -t ) at the end of the command line.
Two, your collection ought to look something like 12345/1, not just 1, where
12345 is the handle (12345789 is the default you use if you haven't set up your

Re: [Dspace-tech] Batch Import: multiple authors problem

2008-10-01 Thread Panagiotis Kontaxis
Yes, I tried it. But the two authors are imported as one.
I modified the source of MetaDataImport.java and I added the possibility to
generate xml tags for three more colunms. I named the columns
ContributorAuthor1, ContributorAuthor2, ContributorAuthor3,
ContributorAuthor4 and the generated xml tag the same for each column:
dcvalue element=contributor qualifier=author . So the authors added as
separate entities.
Thank you for your help and let me know if there is a more elegant way to do
it.

I thought that a cool idea would be to name the columns contributor-author,
contributor-editor, contributor-advisor (to be able to extract the element
from qualifier), and make a loop to run each column on each ResultSet. So no
need for modifying the java code to add a new column!

 I've found this guide/solution:

 Have anyone meet the same problem? Also is there any other solution/guide

  to know DocBook anyway. I can't contribute directly to a Microsoft
  Office document, because there's no such thing as Microsoft Office for
  Linux, and Linux is my office platform.

 Then I think you'd be intrigued to hear that the .doc file becomes
 a .pdf
 file by passing through .odt in OpenOffice, and the particular copy of
 OpenOffice is running on a Linux desktop. Grin

I'm aware that OO thinks it knows how to read MSOffice files. I'm
also aware that the results of repeated MSO - OO -MSO trips are
sometimes unfortunate, so I didn't want to suggest that. Too much is
still unknown about the precise meanings in the bag of serialized OLE
objects that is an MS Office document. That you get decent results by
this route is impressive.

 Unfortunately, I can't think of a good way for us to collectively edit
 either a .doc or an .odt, so that presents a challenge.

There's the real rub. Collaboration using office document files is
typically serial: A does some work, passes the file to B, who does
some work, passes the file back to A or on to C. What we have is
(potentially) a hundred contributors all wanting to work on different
parts of the document at the same time.

That's why people keep bringing up DocBook and the like. These are
plain-text formats. For such material there are good tools to manage
parallel development and merge many updates into one result.

Hmmm, it might be possible to do the same with ODF if it were
uncompressed, but I don't know anyone who is doing that.

 No continuous process of documentation update was established at that
 time. As I mentioned in my prior message, we're looking to change that,
 and *this thread* is concrete evidence that we're doing so in a public
 fashion.

Noted.  Thank you.

 We are certainly overdue to produce a documentation update to permit
 a 1.5.1 release, and I can use any advice or help you (and anyone)
 is willing to offer. I think we're going to end up with another one
 time collation into a .doc - .odt (*) - .pdf due to timing
 constraints, and I hope that immediately after we'll be able to make
 a format change that enables another process to emerge.

I think that calling a halt to doc update firefighting, at a
reasonable point in the near future, and concentrating on developing a
documentation process that can use the resources of the community
well, is of great importance to the continuing success of DSpace.
Yes, 1.5.1 needs to get out of the door. But after that, having a
process is more urgent than a pile of small updates. Once we have the
process, it becomes easy to coordinate lots of people each doing a
couple of those small updates, all at the same time. Delegation is
the key to getting a lot of work out of a large body of workers.

 I'm sorry that you feel that this isn't an open process. What would
 you have me write down at this stage? I think we're engaged in the
 evolution right now - and you and others are participating.

Apparently there is some way to get changes to someone in some form
that will cause those changes to appear in a future release of the
docs. The way, the person(s), and the form should be written down and
put on a page at www.dspace.org under a heading such as How to
Contribute Documentation. It can be noted that this is an interim
process. It's okay to not be finished -- most of us are aware that
software is never complete until it is retired. Just capture what you
currently do, and then we'll be able to work while improvements are
being thought out.

If there *is* such a page, I haven't found it, so perhaps it might be
made more prominent.

As for openness, here's how it has appeared from my perspective:

o Surprise! The documentation is already being redone, in a format
   already selected, one alien to the tools available to me. It's
   nearly finished before I hear about it.

o Surprise! It has been decided that the community-editable
   documentation will no longer ship with the source kit beginning
   with the next release, which is imminent. No method for
   documenting contributions beyond the next release is stated
   anywhere obvious.

After we climb out of the current hole, when contemplating changes in
process, the best approach might be to first announce (e.g. on
dspace-tech) the reasons why current methods are inadequate and invite
discussion of ways to address those inadequacies. I see the
Foundation having an important role as instigator and moderator of
such discussions, helping us to stay focused on the need. A herd of
programmers, tech-writers, and users tends to wander off topic
otherwise.

Re: [Dspace-tech] Batch Import and Namespaces

2007-11-16 Thread Robert Roggenbuck
Hi Don,

thanks for You reply. Sorry for my late response, but the XML-import
seems to me at first as a more official way to do it then using the
csv-package. And so I tried it as first. Now I see both ways have their
advantages and disadvantages (not surprisingly), and I took up Your
thread and looked into ItemImport.java. I succeeded! The changes I made
are below. To add the 'schema'-attribute to every dcvalue tag if
needed the 'fls.php' needs also some little changes. They are also noted
below. The disadvantage of this method is that every imported metadata
value gets a default language qualification. And in most cases it makes
no sense (eg. dates, index numbers or names) or it is wrong (from a
keyword list). The metadata generated by DSpace don't have these
qualifiers (it is set to '-').

Best Regards

Robert

-

fls.php:

function create_tag($schema, $identifier, $qualifier, $value){
 $schemaAttrib = ;
 if ($schema != 'dc') {
 $schemaAttrib =  schema=\$schema\;
 }
 $dc_tag = dcvalue$schemaAttrib element=\$identifier\
qualifier=\$qualifier\$value/dcvalue;
 return $dc_tag;
}

# and the call it with the additional first parameter (two times):
#create_tag($dc[0],$dc[1],$dc[2], ...)

ItemImport.java:

/*
Node schemaAttr = metadata.item(0).getAttributes().getNamedItem( schema);
if (schemaAttr == null)
{
 schema = MetadataSchema.DC_SCHEMA;
}
else
{
 schema = schemaAttr.getNodeValue();
}
*/

Node schemaAttr;
// Add each one as a new format to the registry
for (int i = 0; i  dcNodes.getLength(); i++)
{
 schemaAttr = dcNodes.item(i).getAttributes().getNamedItem(schema);
 if (schemaAttr == null)
 {
 schema = MetadataSchema.DC_SCHEMA;
 }
 else
 {
 schema = schemaAttr.getNodeValue();
 }
 Node n = dcNodes.item(i);
 addDCValue(myitem, schema, n);
}

Don Gourley schrieb:
 Robert,

 The problem is that a bug in ItemImport prevents you from mixing
 different schemas in the same dublin_core.xml file. The loadDublinCore
 method gets the schema from the first dcvalue tag and reuses it
 for every metadata element. But it is a pretty easy Java fix to
 move 'schema = schemaAttr.getNodeValue();' from outside the loop
 that traverses the dcNodes list to inside that loop so it is
 retrieved for each metadata element if you need to mix schemas.

 (Sorry, I don't have a patch because we use a more substantially
 rewritten ItemImport for other customizations.)

Re: [Dspace-tech] Batch Import and Namespaces

2007-11-16 Thread Robert Roggenbuck
Hi Christophe,

Yes and no. You mean the encoding setting in the XSLT, didn't You? In
the input file there is no encoding. After doing so, the import process
can start, but I get a Java message that my access to the PostgreSQL via
the user 'dspace' is denied:

**Test Run** - not actually importing items.
Exception in thread main org.postgresql.util.PSQLException: FATAL:

[snip]

Are there additional parameters to set the password at the commandline?
Via pgAdmin III I get access as db-user 'dspace' to the database.

You wrote:
  If you load manually multi-files documents into DSpace, what do you
  have (or what do you want)? Multiple bitstreams in a bundle? Multiple
  bundles?

We want to set up a new thesis database (as a first step to a bigger
repository). And for 1 thesis there are usually 2 files: a PDF version
and a compressed file bundle containing the original sources (eg.
MS-Word or TeX) and sometimes statistical raw material, graphics etc.
so we need 1 metadata set and 2 associated files.

  What are the values of the name field of the bundles of the
  different files?

Which name field? Should dim:original contain further attributes?

Best regards

Robert

Hi Christophe!

Going through the given Wiki-page and the related articles about
Metadata ans Stylesheets it seems not possible to apply the
ItemBatchUpdate to any of the XML-files generated by 'csv_import'. But
since I have no fixed format of my input data (it resides in a RDBMS and

'org.dspace.content.crosswalk.XSLTingest' as described in

[Dspace-tech] Batch import error

2007-09-05 Thread Hlias Stavrakis
Hi,
 i have entered a new schema in dspace and use Batch inport tool to enter items
and metadata values using both DC and MySchema.

During batch import when parsing the first metadata field of MySchema in
dublin_core.xml i'm getting :

java.sql.SQLException: bad_dublin_core SchemaID=1, isReferencedBy null
 at org.dspace.content.Item.update(Item.java:1463)
 at org.dspace.content.InstallItem.installItem(InstallItem.java:146)
 at org.dspace.app.itemimport.ItemImport.addItem(ItemImport.java:663)
 at org.dspace.app.itemimport.ItemImport.addItems(ItemImport.java:506)
 at org.dspace.app.itemimport.ItemImport.main(ItemImport.java:415)
java.sql.SQLException: bad_dublin_core SchemaID=1, isReferencedBy null

the schema id of MySchema is not 1 as reported above but 3.
Furthermore, the schema element in dublin_core.xml has the right value
MySchema but the tool recognizes only the basic DC schema because
when i define the same field in DC the tool works fine even if the schema
element has MySchema value.

Is there any known bug or something that i did wrong?

Thanks.

Re: [Dspace-tech] Batch import error

2007-09-05 Thread Helm, Brian T
If I understand correctly, the ItemImport tool wants a separate xml file for
each metadata schema. I don't really like this approach, so what I did was to
implement a little hack in the ItemImport.java file
(org/dspace/app/itemimport/ItemImport.java). In the addDCValue method, above
this line:

String element = getAttributeValue(n, element);

I added the following block:

String new_schema = getAttributeValue(n, schema);
   if(new_schema != null){
schema = new_schema;
}

This allowed me to use multiple schemas in a single file.

Subject: [Dspace-tech] Batch import error

Hi,
 i have entered a new schema in dspace and use Batch inport tool to enter items
and metadata values using both DC and MySchema.

During batch import when parsing the first metadata field of MySchema in
dublin_core.xml i'm getting :

java.sql.SQLException: bad_dublin_core SchemaID=1, isReferencedBy null
 at org.dspace.content.Item.update(Item.java:1463)
 at org.dspace.content.InstallItem.installItem(InstallItem.java:146)
 at org.dspace.app.itemimport.ItemImport.addItem(ItemImport.java:663)
 at org.dspace.app.itemimport.ItemImport.addItems(ItemImport.java:506)
 at org.dspace.app.itemimport.ItemImport.main(ItemImport.java:415)
java.sql.SQLException: bad_dublin_core SchemaID=1, isReferencedBy null

the schema id of MySchema is not 1 as reported above but 3.
Furthermore, the schema element in dublin_core.xml has the right value
MySchema but the tool recognizes only the basic DC schema because
when i define the same field in DC the tool works fine even if the schema
element has MySchema value.

Is there any known bug or something that i did wrong?

Thanks.

[Dspace-tech] Batch import from Excel / Open Office CSV file

2007-05-07 Thread Mika Stenberg
My new php script allowing easy import of metadata and files via CSV
files created from Excel, OpenOffice etc. is now available at:

http://tds.terkko.helsinki.fi/utils/

Frankly, I find this the easiest way to import large sets of data to our
Dspace.

The script requires PHP to work (old versions would propably do, Im
using 4 and 5 though) and wget or similar if you want to submit files
directly from the Internet.

Let me know what you think, any comments and suggestion are appreciated.
