Okey time has again gone forward and it looks like all fork talk is
quiet again.
So will it be again same thing that 1 year is quiet and then someone pop
up here and yell that this project need a fork!

It has happen already at least 3 times. Every time there is much talking
and much promises from current project owner, but nothing is really done.

So will we again wait another year and hope that maybe this time?

I have been looking other directions also and bogofilter is something
what I might take a closer look.

As I promised in the earlier discussions I'm willing to do the testing
on the Mac platform as I currently support some users on OSX and have
got my own mailserver running on it. i've included DSpam into my
documentation/instruction set for setting up a mailserver under mac osx
(see http://diymacserver.com/docs/). So answering question on
using/compiling/configuring DSpam on OSX would be my way of helping.

Let's see where it takes us...

As we can see no easy desicion :-)

I will take a look about the linking thing

I think a dual solution maybe suitable, but the maillingaccess must be
much better documentated so new users (and you wont belive how many
don't know how to subscribe) have it easier.

But what we need then is the link from the homepage to the new list
and forum.

Without that it would be a nice feature for existing users but new get
lost

When we get this we can also make some posts to it newsplattforms like
golem or so and tell them that the project is active and developers
are needed. Maybe well get response and some more users :-)

I think after jon stopped being actively involved with the project it
died. Jon used to keep it updated every week but I don't think Sensory
Networks has actively done anything for the project since they took
over.

You can see this as the latest released version was March 19, 2007.

on http://dspam.nuclearelephant.com/contracts.shtml they advertise paid
support. but do Sensory Networks actually have the technical knowledge
to be able to do this? I know Jon did..

I've been using dspam for a long time but my confidence is very low at
the moment in be continuing to use dspam as if anything goes wrong there
is NO support at all.

Thanks

Assuming we would make a fork. What would be the things you would like to see
in DSPAM after the fork? What functionality, etc...

I personally would support a fork as long as DSPAM stays totally free. The
current code does have some parts which are hidden and you only get if you buy
certain hardware. And currently the DSPAM code is free but SN can at any time
turn the code into closed source. They can't revert the already published code
to be closed source but they can transform any future releases to be closed
source.

Anyway... I am much interested to hear what functions and enhancements you
would like to see build into DSPAM after a fork.

Personally, I believe that we first need to decide that we want to fork.
IMHO, it's more important to get a platform with a level of community
support for existing users and allow publishing of patches and bug fixes
before we try to develop new features.

SN has continually been successful in placating us. Every time we start
this discussion they again come and make promises. I believe we gave
them enough time "to put their money where their mouth is". We need to
act, or else DSPAM will die a natural death.

I say, "let's just do it". Let SN do whatever they want to do. They can
leave us or join us, who cares? I believe that everyone on this list
wants to get DSPAM back where it was two years ago. So let's just do it.
Let's not wait for the developers to show up on this list and say their
ready to help. Developers typically do not read the user's list, they
have their own list. They'll come along when they're needed.if we can
get the project up again as a community project. DSPAM is just too good
to let SN, or anyone else kill it!!
