[DSTAR_DIGITAL] Digital code squelch

2009-07-07 Thread Michael Carey
Hi Everybody,
I've been trying to get digital code squelch working between my IC-2820H and
IC-91AD radios without success.
I've set the two digit code the same on both radios and have enabled CSQL in
both radios but I cannot get either radio to respond to the transmission from
the other. I am trying this out on a simplex frequency and also on a duplex
pair of frequencies with the same lack of joy.
I've done a quick search through this group and found a comment that this isn't
a D-Star protocol function but something Icom has added. Is this correct? How
is the two digit code transmitted in the DV stream?
Has anyone got digital code squelch working... and does it pass via an Icom
repeater with an active Dplus link to another?
Regards,
Michael.

There is call sign squelch and digital coded squelch. Call sign unmutes
an individual call sign, and digital coded squelch uses the 2 digit
number only in dstar format (not at all like digital coded squelch used
in PMR). Is is possible that you have call sign squelch set on one of
the radios instead of digital code ? 73, de nu5d

My wife and I use the Digital Code Squelch on our 2M simplex channel. We
use it to keep the receiver from "falsing" from intermods, etc. Works great on
all our radios.

[DSTAR_DIGITAL] Re: Digital code squelch

2009-07-07 Thread Jonathan Naylor
The D-Star code squelch information is transmitted within the slow data section
of the DV transmission. It has it's own ID (0xC2 I think, and the code is
repeated twice for a little robustness). Since it's in the slow data section,
code squelch data should pass through the D-Star repeater network unmolested.

For those interested in protocol information, the code squelch data number is
converted to binary in an odd way, a value of 12 on the screen will be
transmitted as 0x12 in the data stream!

Do you have $4000 just for the radio? If you read what you sent, that radio is
P25 used for Police and Fire. Though there are some P25 Ham repeaters out
there, P25 can not come close to what D-Star can do. In the Ham and Emcomm
world, D-Star (and Ham radio) has no thing to worry about!

I'll have to double-check the manual at home, but you can also
look this up...

I think you're in the wrong/other/callsign squelch mode, not the
2 digit code squelch mode.

Hit & Hold the button one more time.

Callsign squelch also works well, if you set that one up... for
two people. Doesn't work so well for a group... of course.

RE: [DSTAR_DIGITAL] The Future of USA Emcomm?

2009-07-07 Thread Adam Karsin
I just don't see this being a major replacement of resources. The US
Government still seems to have a love for Motorola. The ham community still
and in my personal opinion will always have a role in emcomm. We as ham
radio operators have the time, ability and resources to fill the gaps and
cover the much needed health and welfare gap that responders do not. I do
disaster response and my focus is communications, I have to support teams in
the field, from within the field and know first hand that it is the ham
radio volunteers that set up in hospitals, shelters and emergency operations
centers that can get the word out to families and friends outside the
affected area that their loved ones are safe.

Just my thoughts!!

Hi everyone,

I jsut joined the group, and I guess I come in seek od advice. I am trying to
put a go kit together. I'll admit is pretty amitious. My question though is
should I consider a D-star radio like the ID-880? Even though there really are
D-star repeaters in MN.

thanks & 73,

Ben,

Only you can really answer your question, but let me pose a question for
you to think about. What if you deployed to a major incident (like
Katrina) in an area where D-STAR has been deployed heavily for Emergency
Communications, would you want your options for support limited by not
having D-STAR in your bag of tricks?

I for one would agree that D-STAR would be a useful addition to any
emergency communications setup. My list of equipment to be
considered for emergency deployment includes

2m/70cm mobile FM transceiver and antenna
IC-91AD and 2m amp (this combination will give around 50W Tx power on
2m) and antenna
HF transceiver, tuner and inverted V antenna
Embedded Echolink node (in case I get deployed to an adjacent
unaffected area to setup links)
3G mobile router (for use with Echolink node)
Batteries and chargers

The D-STAR in the mix has a few uses. Firstly, if there's an
incident within range of an existing gateway, D-STAR can be used
directly. Also, there is a portable gateway in VK3, which could be
deployed. Finally, D-STAR is proving itself as extremely good on
marginal paths (outperforming FM by a fair margin), so it could be
used for some fairly long or difficult point to point links that
would be marginal at beast on FM.

Current procedures here would favour the FM and/or HF radios, but if
a situation called for D-STAR, and there were skilled D-STAR
operators available, I wouldn't hesitate to use it.
