Re: [DSTAR_DIGITAL] Re: Pathway obstruction Analog versus Digital

2009-03-14 Thread Eric Pinnell
I think that's true.

I have found that inside the house working module C nothing gets out, or in.
However if I walk out in the yard with my 92AD everything works fine even on
mid power. The D-STAR signal seems to be a little more touchy than an analog
signal, but once you hit the D-STAR repeater your are in and have a clear copy.

Plasma TV's are notorious for interference.

You can't draw too many conclusions from experience with one repeater. On the
reflectors, you will notice that some repeaters have quite a bit of R2D2 and
some have very few signals with R2D2. Fine tuning a repeater to maximize HT
performance is more difficult on DV because you can't hear and easily identify
the sources of problems. Site noise, intermod, and signals on the input from
out of area users combined with the possibility of a bad cable or connector all
could result in poor weak signal performance. It takes time to identify and
correct these problems.

Your experience with "noisy" DV inside the house on an HT on two meters is not
uncommon. You might have better luck on UHF. There seem to be a lot of noise
generators in the two meter spectrum in the average home. DV is degraded by
interference as well as weak signals. If you are getting into the repeater
better than you are hearing it, you may have local QRM. Take a listen in FM
mode on the repeater output and see what you hear. It's possible you could turn
off an appliance and get rid of the noise. Computers, cable and satellite TV
boxes are known suspects.

I use the BD-35 with my IC-92AD and it works extermely well.

100 mile here with a 92AD set mid power driving BD-35 over 2 sets of
ranges in between.
Constant base setup, with that distance connection operating 24/7 here.
That is over the ¨horizon¨

This is true. I'm registered to K5CTX where I used to live, but now I use
VK3RWN. Never bothered changing the registration.

Normally, the convention is you register with the gateway that's
closest to you. If you have one in your local area, register there,
otherwise you could pick one in an area you're likely to
frequent. Remember to register at only ONE gateway. Also, once your
registration is approved, you have to create a "terminal" for your
D-STAR radio, so it can access the network.

There is documentation out there, someone will be able to supply the link.

I'm going to reply to myself as something just struck me. When I use my new VK3
call I haven't had much luck getting outside the gateway (although I haven't
tried that much)... I'm thinking I need to register my new call because it
doesn't see me as K5EJP anymore. Interesting...

Re: [DSTAR_DIGITAL] Japanese Language Lessons

2010-07-10 Thread Eric Pinnell
I think these lessons are all right. I don't have a need for Japanese, but as
an
American that used to work in Paris, France every few months I found that
knowing your way around a restaurant and day to day stuff isn't bad.

When it comes down to it, the French didn't want you hear your bad French and
would speak English, but they appreciated the effort. I would imagine the same
is true for the Japanese stations.

btw, some of my favourite works are French... like "Sandwich" and
"Mayonnaise" :) yum! I have some favourite Japanese words, like "toro" and
"Uni"... and "Sapporo" :)

The lessons are pretty basic but helped me get back into the Nihon-go mindset
before my first trip to Japan in 2009. Still, this Japanese-American benefitted
(survived) a week in Tokyo by the better English language skills of the
Japanese. (I lost whatever Japanese language skills learned in J-School living
in SoCal where I hear the language spoken less and less). Need to study further
as my daughter is asking to go again next year.
