RE: [DX-CHAT] logs on laptops
Actually, no it's not nonsense, John. I've heard some stories about some of the actions that US Customs & Border Patrol have taken with certain individuals entering the country. And there was a story about this on Ed Foster's GripeLine Blog over on Infoworld's site (see http://weblog.infoworld.com/gripeline/archives/2008/02/laptop_searches.html ). You may not know Ed Foster, but trust me, he wouldn't talk about this without solid background information. So there is some validity with the general suggestion to be cautious when entering the US with a laptop. The slightly racist wisecrack, however, should be ignored. 73, ron w3wn -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of john Sent: Monday, February 11, 2008 4:05 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; dx-chat@njdxa.org Subject: Re: [DX-CHAT] logs on laptops It's also nonsense, from a habitual US basher and list troll. Re: [DX-CHAT] logs on laptops
If there is internet access where the operator(s) is/are going, it would be ideal to have an ftp site somewhere that you could upload your logs to before leaving. That way, designated people with the password can get to the logs if need be. We have an ftp site we use at work for similar use. It is set up so it is not accessible via anonymous ftp. 73, Zack W9SZ On Mon, 11 Feb 2008, Charles Harpole wrote: Now that it is common knowledge that US Customs Agents (and maybe other countries' agents) can and will search and even seize travelers' laptop computers at border crossings, it is even more important for DXpeditions, and others, to store their computer logs in several places and several media to avoid loss or delayed access. Re: [DX-CHAT] logs
Jim: There is nothing complicated about LOGGER32 with regard to exporting/importing files and logs. First, I would recommend you direct your question to the LOGGER32 reflector and I am sure Geoff or one of the other guys will help you with your problem. I originally converted my logs that resided on LOGPLUS to the ADIF format and then loaded them onto LOGGER32 with few problems. I have been using LOGGER32 for many years now and have never had a problem downloading to LOTW, or converting the logs to Cabrillo for submittal to contests. I responded to your previous question along these lines and never head back from you. I would recommend exporting a few of your log files to a save area and then inspect them. I sent you examples of what a log file in ADIF format should look like, so that you can check them to see if they look lilke they should. If you need another example of the ADIF log file format, I would be happy to supply it If you want to forward a couple of your ADIF log format files to me to look at, please do so. If your exported log ADIF files are in the correct ADIF format and content, then they should process by the LOTW s/w to create the .tq8 format file for input to LOTW. I am forwarding this response to the LOGGER32 reflector as a prelude to you getting help from them if needed. I definitely would hate to see you leave LOGGER32 over this. It is a super and simple logging program that is pretty hard to beat. There is some siimple solution to this. John Owens - N7TK -- Original message -- From: "Jim Abercrombie" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I am computer illiterate when it comes to converting log files. I cannot get logger32 to load my logs into LOTW. Is there a free logging program that is not so complicated that all I have to do is click on export files to LoTW that isn't do darn complicated. Re: [DX-CHAT] logs
Jim, I use L32 as do many around here at all levels of computer literacy. The export of the LoTW file is as simple as you can get. The more complicated part is signing and uploading to LoTW but you appear you have that under control. I'm pretty computer literate and have a good understanding of L32. If you can detail the steps you are taking to export your file, maybe I can help. The process is; Click FILE/EXPORT FILE/EXPORT LoTW FILE. You will the get a pop-up EXPORT LoTW RECORDS and a drop down menu that will list the operators you have in your log. You can either choose ALL OPERATORS or any specific operator. If you choose a specific operator you MUST have filled in the OPERATOR field in you log. Anyway, if you can give me more details and want some help, contact me directly. L32 is as good a logger and LoTW free interface as any. DX Keeper is more automated but I haven't played with it much yet. re Logs closing Could some DX club or individual take on old logs as a cenral clearing house? Nice service, eh? I was sitting here with my morning coffee thinking the same thing. Yes, would be a nice gesture. If I weren't so far behind on my own logging chores I wouldn't mind picking up a couple myself. But then again maybe handling someone else's qsl'ing would inject a lil discipline into my own logging.
