[DX-NEWS] [:dx-news:] the end of an era?
The FCC, along with a lot of hams are suggesting that the time has come to drop the CW requirement. Some even believe that CW is no longer "relevant." This may or not be true so I would like to suggest something that is undeniably relevant. How about a 25wpm typing exam with zero errors for a five minute period? Some of the ops using PSK and RTTY definately qualify for this "upgrade." This sure would help things along during contests, ragchewing etc. How about having setups at the various swaps so ops can qualify for an award in this area? Surely it wouldn't be out of line to have endorsements for 30, 35, 40 and even 45wpm error-free. I will continue to use CW because it gets through when nothing else does. I cuts right through the crud and QRM. CW can be used with the simplest of equipment and is probably the last skill-based mode in ham radio. Seldom do you hear bad language, etc. on CW. A simple "lid" or "QLF" usually suffices. On another note: Every envelope from the bureau contains at least a few SWL cards from all over the globe. We don't know who is listening when we operate. Some of the SSB ops who get on the air to view their opinions should remember that people from other parts of the globe may be forming opinons of their own as they listen. Even though this may happen on CW I personally have never heard a single CW op utter the banality that spews forth on some SSB rusted-dial fequencies. Yes, we all are entitled to our own political views but please discuss it down at the corner bar or someother place off the air. Remember to have brain engaged before putting mouth in gear. The walls have ears! 73, Bob, W8HGH Robert Dixon [EMAIL PROTECTED] EarthLink Revolves Around You.
